I had always assumed that since the mugann's had unstable molecules that during this scene the few mugann's that were around during the GDM had split into those small bomb things, and had a chain reaction explosion making it appear that there were a lot more enemy's, which ultimately resulted in the large explosion at the end of it all.

Just a small theory I had with this when I first saw it is all. Other then that it's great to see this scene over again!~

I mean normally when there's some sort of disaster of this magnitude, Hurricane Katrina, 9/11, any major earthquake and/or tsunami etc, most people would never make any sort of reference to it at all. Yet with almost every anime I've seen, when ever there's a massive explosion, it's almost always a mushroom cloud. I wouldn't think that the japanese of all people would do that so often.
