  • i love this live performance, that is when a musician is at his most naked moment, when everything shows, and is heard, lol/wynn

  • Ingredients : Jerry Garcia LSD25 and strained thru a lesley!

  • acid + blues + rock and roll x)

  • I peyote out with alittle valium and wine plus a toke or 2 of purple haze and just close my eyes and become enveloped in a snow flake patterned shell and listen to this video and alot of pig pen grateful dead . I think Cippolina is the best but Gary Duncan is a real snake charmer in this video !

  • @furgore1 /your ideas here are dead on, and i totally agree with you here ^5/wynn

  • Take Me Back Mr. Wizard !!!!!!!!!! ;o)

  • still one of tha baddest fuckin tunes still out there, as far as I am concerned/wynn ^5

  • I love the kid running between Gary and John at 1:10. It's representative of how close you could get to the artists back then and so unlike the huge venues of today where the only way to see the artists is with binoculars.

  • @jts3339 That kid was me when i was 11!!!!

  • This thing is phenomenal! I also love the footage of Quicksilver from 3 years before this at Monterey Pop, doing a rather tripped out but fully kick ass version of "Dino's Song".

  • @pdorn777 /i totally agree with you here ^5/wynn

  • loved them live in the 60's and i still do. was at this show. this music makes me happy.

  • Love this tune !

  • Magic man pure brill

  • Fantastic as usual guitar from Cippo and Gary....but I WANT DINO'S GUITAR !!!! I just love huge big bodied guitars.

  • 30 yeras ago, i had payed a fortune to buy original copy of Happy Trails (on vinyl of course)...was so fuckin rare !

  • Blazing - perfect description!

  • Drummer @ 2:41

  • Wonderful

  • totally great!

  • John Cipollina

    R.I.P.

  • This is just about perfect...any neocon a*** who wonder why hippies redefined the world - and not Ayn Rand...take heed. Duncan , Chips, Freiberg....wonderful.

  • These guys could jam!

  • I suspect there used to be many universes until one of them finally came up with the Bo Diddley beat. And it was good.

  • one of my favorite blazing songs.

  • Nice cover

  • Bo Diddley will get you everytime!

  • i love the way people danced in those times

  • 3:10 - 4:00

  • dino valenti is in it?

  • turn on,tune in,drop out.Fantastic

  • This is so AWESOME! :D

  • @tsvc2010 I remember listening to this band when I was just a teen. Far out, where have the last 42 years gone?

  • Chipps is the best....ever!

  • AYE!!!

  • soon as I heard this it was so long college hello love in's and san francisco.....Huichol53......

  • What a beautiful era!!!

  • WHOOAA! you can feel the buzz!

  • SOMEBODY GET ME A TIME MACHINE,QUICK!!!!!!!

  • John Cippollina (August 24, 1943 - May 29, 1989)

  • I can't stop watching this!

  • @KingBoreas that makes two of us!!!

  • I was never into the drugs. If I couldn't get high on booze, sex and R & R, the hell with it! I stayed high a lot too! One, two, or all three ways were just fine with me.

  • Never get tired of seeing the best jam band of 60's San Francisco Sound. I saw them every weekend from 1966 till late 1968. Still saw them in the 70's but they weren't playing the the city every weekend like the old days.

  • @TheQuicksilverdog That's 'cause they were hanging out in Hawaii and we were the fortunate recipients of the best band around. Lots of free concerts, we were big fans and groupies!

  • @bobbiejaeger It was good while it lasted, but all good things must pass. Just glad I was there & cherish the memories.

  • GOD cant believe it. so good music .Wish I was born in USA in the 50 s to grow up to this music but probably would have been a drug addict there Love from Babsanfredrik in Sweden

  • This video is from Sonoma State College in April of 1970. This was a free concert for the college students and local community. This is a well-recorded video/ audio for it's time. What was truly amazing was guest artist, Nicki Hopkins, playing a grand piano somewhere in the background. I was there with my friends, dancing in the fresh spring air. What a different world it was! So glad that this showed up on you tube.

  • @cullyred ....DAMN, I went to Sonoma State University from 1982-1984. Would've been nice to see shows like this. They used to call it "Granola State".....Those rolling hills that can be seen in the backround has a place called GRAVITY HILL....We used to do bowls of skunk and sometimes trip on L, and freak as our car rolled backward while going uphill !

  • Answer to SIMKINETICS

I'm pretty sure it was Chrissy Field on a Sunday afternoon. Been a long time Bro., and I was a big QMS fan, especially Cippolina. Seen them perform live over 30 times mostly at the Fillmore but outdoors in GGPark, the Grove, and CF.

  • Volker Park in KC, every Sunday. Concerts in the park by local bands. Awesome memories from the 60's. QMS, one of my favorites of that era.

  • I love you , Quicksilver Messenger Service

this video wtih the beautiful people in 1969.... oh my god!

is fantastic ! Ojala hubiese podido estar ahi bailando ...

tenia 12 años y estaba al otro lado del charco...

LARGA VIDA , LONG LIFE , QUICKSILVER MUSIC !!!

  • im 35 now but when i was 13 i fell in love with the psychedelic sound mainly the airplane and the dead but then you hear the service: fuck!chip has the archetypal sf sound along with barry melton from the fish thanks for the upload from the uk

  • Never trust a Prankster.

  • @aurora1957A no questions about it!

  • Didn*'t I recognize Bill Gates among the crowd?

  • Those hippie chicks sure know how to dance!

  • @LBurris597 we do!

  • l'aria nei capelli la possiamo avere ancora!

  • I can never get enough of their sound or Dino's voice.

  • That's Gary Duncan singing.

  • des génies!!!.........;thanx

the guy with sunglasses, Keith Richards? : -)

  • @animal4090 Dino Valenti

  • @WeirFaithful : thanx , i knew it ....but with his sunglasses, he looks like Keith Richards...-)........great video ...Cipollina rules !!!

  • @animal4090 No. Duncan Rules. Sorry.

  • In seems that noone can have enough of QMS.

    :-)

  • @archimedesnation Myself included especially when I'm stoned!

  • @MrBrombomb; "And I would not feel so all alone..."

  • Jesus, this band can shake it on down.

  • Oh man. Nothing is worse than a group of Marxist yuppies. Drop bombs, not acid.

  • @aurora1957A I also hear alot of "garcia" in there too... I think they influenced each other grealty, played tons of shows together(QMS + GD), and if you listen closely, their playing styles (at this time ) are not far off from each other....

  • @artsmith1972 ....DEFINITELY......Lotsa Jerry in there, and if I closed my eyes, I could imagine that Pigpen would be perfect for this tune....

  • Dino Valente... The decline of Quicksilver Messenger Service...

  • Follow Cipollina, that impeccable touch on the strings, and check out an old acquaintance, Steve Kimock Band. That sound you speak of in those times, yea, every concert had that sound, and man, when you are playin, on the grass, surrounded by people dancin, this was the scene at the time too. Long live those who carry on that sound.

  • saw 'em in 72 loved 'em

  • Cipollina's guitar sound MUST be the sound of those times...?

  • @beowulven The Family Dog, man

  • Great band and amazing film footage, the sourroundings, the sky ,the people dancing in trance, the wha wha pedal, thanks you for sharing this amazing video.

  • John Cipollina's guitar looks so cool

  • A very rare insite to see them 'Live' as opposed to the LP's. What a great band in many area's. Jamming, ballads, psych ect. Thx much 4 sharing.

  • I first saw them play in the park (Golden Gate, squares!), in 1968, I was 15 years old. Out of all I heard that day, I thought they were it! Went and bought the original first QMS record at a Singer Sewing Center for $1.98, the next day. In the early 80's got to know John C. somewhat personally. At a Saloon gig in S.F., we sat together during breaks. I remember talking to him about that show. Outdoor shows were always very cool around the Bay Area.

  • Rock rock

  • I always thought that Cipollina, Duncan, Freiberg, Elmore, & Hopkins should have employed a lyricist, the same way that the Grateful Dead, Elton John, King Crimson, and Procol Harum did. Then they wouldn't have needed Valente, and they would've been a better group and would've stayed together longer.

  • @Cielamouroux I was under the impression that Gary Brooker of Procol Harum did most of the writing.. composition and lyrics(?). :-)

  • @margovallen Keith Reid was always the lyricist for Procol Harum. Gary Brooker composed the music, for the most part.

  • @Cielamouroux Oh yeah! I forgot about that.... also, Matthew Fisher? Or did he just produce? Thank you for reminding me of this :-)

  • you can play solos and do whaever you want , but when jimmy was in stage you wanted to put your guitar in the closet

  • anybody who likes this (and i do) has to go find the CD "Happy Trails" to hear some of the best guitar soloiing from the SF 60 scene. Cippolina was great and that album showcases him. i always thought the bassist (Frieberg) looked like the guy who played Jerry the dentist on the old bob newhart show, remember that?

  • Good ole dayz!!!

  • Think I could watch this everyday & never get tired of it. Quicksilver was the best back of the city bands (SF) in 60's. Used to see them almost every weekend from '66 till the road off into the sunset.

  • One of my Fav Marin bands ! Got too talk too gary duncan, bought JC a drink one night and meant Dino V son !!!

  • YEAH . this song rox , i want back to 60 !!! I am hippie and i love that music and similiar !!!! DAMN !!

  • one of his greatest feats was the writing of the song "get together" which later became a big hit for the youngbloobs.some have called it the hippie national anthem.dino unfortuneately spent alot of time in jail on drug charges which may have been good for qms.he wrote some good songs but he looks like he wants to steal the show

  • Dino runied this band fro me.

  • 1 9 6 9...

  • if i had a timemachine....a legend!!

  • @skolkoremi ...you got it spot on ..."Legend"....

  • I saw em at eh fillmore with Buddy Miles . QMS played till 4:30 Am . It was the night after Jimi Hendrix died . Buddy Miles was 2nd bill and was amazing but QMS was even more amazing except that first set with DIno which sucked . Dino was the total death of this fabulous band with one of my all time favorite guitarist -jOHN cIPPOLINA No Dino from 1AM till 4:30 . will never forget it !!!!

  • Very Nice! Captures the spirit of the 60s in all its best elements. Brings me back to my youth and a period of imagination and hope. The free-spirited dancing around the band is quintessential 60s; love it! Thank you for posting this

  • I wonder if the kid who runs through the band at ~ 1:10 remembers this? If you're out there- let us know.

  • This is good music, not what you see on NBC

  • Anyone know who's the dude at 1:44, looks like L.Helm.

  • Free spirit lives on!!!

  • The absolutley best band from that era in my humble opinion! Just love Happy Trails back then and now!

  • Nothing better then a QMS gigs. Takes be back to 1966 & going to the city every

weekend to see the Quicksilver Messenger Service through 1970. They were the king of the jam bands. The dueling lead guitar work between John Cipollina & Gary Duncan where phenomenal. The band was so tight.

  • This video captures, I contend, the real spirit of the "summer of Love". You had a great band doing a great extended version of a rock classic to a highly entusiastic live audience. God, I miss those days...but they were great while they lasted.

  • @badjaycl i agree, iwasnt born till 75 but i see vids like this and it makes me feel like i should have been there,a great version of the song and with dino as well, there is not much film of the band,i like the clip of them in 67 from the film revolution, with the band playing in a ballroom with the lightshow!!!

  • For you rock gear folk, John C's amp that you see at 2:14 is on display at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

  • Oh those were the days, best time of my life. Nothing better then going to the city every weekend to see the Quicksilver Messenger Service back in the 60's. What a stage trip it was.

  • looks like good times to me, dino sounds like he's got a buzz.

  • yes, some of "YOU"never got iff the bus!!!

  • i think Dino needed to get a trim, wallpaper the closet ..a little ...settle him down a little.....visit his squaw a bit etc...

  • Cip and the boys...So sweet. I was there,,,I know, Nothing like it now. Thanx aurora.

  • i wish i was there that day, what a groove, just to see the band and be with that crowd!!!!

  • Rest in Peace, Chet Powers, aka Dino Valenti!

    October 7, 1937 - November 16, 1994

  • @DaMom54 And rest in peace the Great John Cippolina. These guys were a great band who just didn't quite catch the wave.

  • Did you ever see them play live before Dino? I'm just curious.

  • yes....i was in my mothers womb at the time.........i believe they started the set with duncan and brady and ended with not fade away.....from all reports cippolinas b string was slightly flat but that didn't stop him from playing some killer whammy laced solos with a relatively clean tone.

  • Look at 1:43. Clint Eastwood is digging the music.

  • I wish people still danced like this. QSM is awesome, and the heads fill it up.

  • Better than Bo Diddley ever performed it! Some of the best lead guitar work ever is presented here.

  • so gooood!

  • Acid was a random factor in those days, (I got spiked via orange juice at Windsor fest back in the day).

  • Fantastic!!! Those were the days!

  • I would like to have been there

  • Duncan is clearly seen singing lead with David coming in on backup here and there. The first Quicksilver album is by far a work of genius due to one song - "The Fool". It ranks with the best compositions ever to emerge from 60's/70's rock music. Only Yes' music surpasses that song...and their stuff is so different that you can't compare the two.

  • That is Gary Duncan singing and playing the lead guitar on this vid. John Cippolina does the wawa pedal lead at the beginning and some wawa at the end. An awesome clip!

  • eff'n fantastic guitar work by Cippolina!

  • Duncan's lead smokes

  • Gary Duncan on lead vocal

  • wait, is that dave or dino singing in this vid? its dave right? or not?

  • hippie child runnin through at 1:12 :D amazing. i love them so much, san francisco scene back in 60s produced best rock and roll music ever.

  • i think the audience were dancing to anothr song...

  • This band is very enjoyable!

  • the drummers 1 cool kat

  • I attended this concert! Infuckingcredible! [The acid was good, too!] LtF

  • @LeonardtheFast You are one damn lucky SOB! As a one-time mid-60's Bay Area hippie, I'm jealous as all-get-out! Please say where this concert took place; it looks like somewhere in the East Bay, maybe Berkeley. QMS was the definitive spirit of that wonderous time & place that was pure magic!

  • it is great - but if you listen to 'Freeway Flyer' on 'Live at the Kabuki Theatre' QMS are even greater... Dino gave them greater power

  • B.S. Sorry - I disagree. He broke the band up.

  • @MinniMoose11 I have to agree with vicparis, although Freeway Flyer is a fantastic tune....

    psychedelic ranger!

  • Absolutely fantastic--Ive listened to Maiden Of The Cancer Moon and all for decades now--but this is the first time Ive seen them live---look at how authentic the whole hippy thing is, Look at the technology these guys are playing with, it looks like the speaker cabinets are home made, so authentic, true spirits of the west coast psych scene.

Ps I always get a real feeling of the old west from listening to quicksilver ( Even tho I'm from Scotland---superb

  • Quicksilver are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow This guy was the real thing! I mean, for real.

  • What a delightful recording. Rock, beauty, and youth at its sweetest.

When the camera shifts from the drummer to the singer's eyes, perfectly aligned, it deserves a little Oscar.

  • @ramspace

"Rock, beauty, and youth at its sweetest." Great line, ramspace!

  • Its all a matter of taste. I liked the way David Freiburg sang but Dino sounded to me like he sang with a potato in his mouth. His ultra macho personality would show through the music and tainted the educated personality of the group.

They all seemed a little like a bunch of tough guy a@#$% s but that guy was volatile and genuinely mean. He almost beat the crap out of me for making an innocent joke. He was ready to go off at any moment. "How hip is that?"

  • @ronicarmen

I've seen them perform in the Bay Area in the late 60's and early 70's. I always thought Dino Valente sounded like he was singing from the inside of a garbage can at least on their studio stuff. However, you might have something there with the "potato-in-the-mouth" theory. I'm guessing Russets but it could have been Small Reds as well.

  • The "guy lookin' like a rock star" is Dino Valente, I'm guessing. As Kesey said of QMS in "The last Suppliment," they began to suffer from "too mucho macho"! This is after Dino's coming to the band, and I have to agree, tho I dig his singing on "Just for Love" and "What About Me". "The Hat" is GREAT, especially heard under the influence of . . . well . . . some of us are still metaphorically "on the Bus," right?

  • @StoneFredFlint

I for one never got off..!

    ;)

  • anyone goin further?

  • Save a seat for me please.

  • @StoneFredFlint I saw Cippolinas Copperhead in Anchorage Alaska in 1973? opening for Charlie Musselwhite and the James Gang. I was only 13 then but took quickly to the ways of the blotter. Who knows? Had it not been for that gig I could be a selfish fat fucking republican today.

  • @StoneFredFlint ..who'd want to get off such a Magical Bus...

  • @RedwoodCoastJubilee

according to the john cipollina memorial website no such video exists

    pity...

    :)

  • Shucks & is a pity but thanks for the reply & for posting this which is as close as it gets. All the Best.

  • Cipollina (always think of cioppino when I see that name--yum!) was the greatest! another "Cadaverous Cowboy" of the era . . . I miss him! always dug his Batwing guitar, too.

  • @StoneFredFlint

It's a Gibson SG with a custom pick guard, Bigsby Vibrato, and Grover Art Deco tuners.

  • Lousy camerwork...

  • Memphis w/the Doobie Bros. and some merciless purple barrel.

    Quite the night.

  • Hey bro, I was there too! Gary was having some major problems with his amps. Somebody dosed the band with the acid, from what I heard. They just kind of played a rambling set. The Doobies rocked the house, though. I was on row 16 on the floor. The old Ellis Auditorium North Hall. 2nd only to Carnegie. Right?

  • Great Band just trying to Carry On!

  • Comment removed

  • jezmundberserker> I am allabouttheink and I see you are talking about Stanley.

Does the guy with the camera look like Kesey to you?? This type of event seems like one they might have been present at.

  • I've seen this video quite a few times, and, in my opinion, I would have to say that's not him. For starters, I never saw Kesey with a beard. Secondly, he used to film with a much smaller camera. Well, that's what I think and I could be wrong. You're right in saying this is the type of event he wouldn't miss.

  • Every time I post a reply, I watch the whole video over again. I just can't get tired of it. I wish I'd been there that day. You're right about this show. It looks like it was planned that very same day. I guess Kesey started doing that sometime before the Dr. Strange thing in 65 or 66. When he rolled around the Bay Area with the Pranksters.

  • What's with the invisible piano player? Not ONE camera shot of Nicky Hopkins!
