  • It's chilling that there seems to be no changes going on at Excellence. My mother and father were there in 2006 and the exact same thing happened. Both of them got pulled out in a riptide, my mother barely made it in and sadly my father didn't. This was at 10:30am - they weren't drinking, the water looked calm, no flags or warning signs and no lifeguards. They need to make some changes. I've been reading about a lot of drownings at Excellence. I'm sure there are more not on the web.

  • Well the problem with going to any place as a tourist is that one must know their limits. Most likely the people that ran missing were either drunk or high.

Nothing wrong with a few drinks, but they should of been careful. Drink at the hotel and if you do don't walk out of the hotel because you get drunk there is a huge chance of something happening.

People drink and drive when they shouldn't and bad shit happens. It is really knowing where to do these things that is important.

  • If you travel one must know that help is not always readily available. I was held in Mexico by a crazy man and did manage to get to the Can. Embassy but only with help from a desk clerk. It is amazing what our countries do NOT do to help. I will never be stuck like that again and it was the only time in my life I ever had to beg for help. I was so scared until I got back into Canada. Worst time of my life.

  • I nearly lost my life today due to a riptide. I never knew what one was till today. I'm trying to learn all I can about it and came across this youtube video. Your absolutly right that awareness needs to be raised. Thank you for making this video.

  • The government failed here, look at the effort put forth forth in lebanon for "dual-citizens", the majority of whom never even lived in canada at any time. Hady, you went out saving someones life and from having known you it wasnt surprising what you did and a fitting way for you to go on to the next plane of existence.

  • this is an outrage. my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

  • Hi Marius, could you please update me with what is happening, there is nothing on the news, I just spoke to my brother Tony, who is good friend of Hady's and didn't know much more. I am assuming the search has ended, when is everyone coming home and how is Tiffany and Hady's family? I have prayed for them and for Hady's return everynight. THANK YOU for what you have for Hady and his family.

  • Being on the beach this day I unfortunately witnessed this tragedy and am disgusted at the lack of support from what is claimed to be a 5 star hotel. Two people in plastic rings were in difficulty 10 to 15 mins before allowing the hotel additional time to react. As expected I have not received a reply to a report emailed to Gregory Beck General Manager 4th January. Copies of this communication have now been passed to our travel company First Choice.

  • For those of you stating that his friends and family should not have asked or expected to get help from the canadian embassy should examine the Canadian embassy's website in the Dominican and you may get a better understanding of the role of the embassy specifically you should check the section that states "We are here to help you in case of an emergency" and check out the section under missing persons and medical emergency and realize that none of these steps were taken in this case.

  • Thank you, I updated the links with the EMBASSY's page.

  • Stand by Hady, do not allow his passing to be forgotten, get the fight back to the Canadian Embassy. What they have done is not acceptable. How do you react how you call them and tell them that your love one is in danger, and they tell you to call tomorrow?!!!

I believe the U.S. Embassy, would react quickly!! What would you say about that Mr. Harper?!!!!!

  • You have my support, all of it, in this matter. I wish the best things for your friend. Never give up hope until there is no reason to give it up.

    From: Canada

I was at this resort the last week of November. A very nice American girl got into trouble with the rip tide. It is a very dangerous location. I've been to many resorts where buoys and ropes indicate a safe swimming area - quite a few have life guards, this in spite of the fact that the ocean was visibly calmer.

  • THERE IS NO LIFE GUARD, NO INDICATION OF UNSTABLE CONDITIONS AND NO SAFETY EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE

HOTEL STAFF AND OR ANIMATORS ON THE BEACH WERE UNWILLING OR UNTRAINED TO OFFER HELP.

THE HOTEL WENT SO FAR AS TO TRY TO CHARGE THE VICTIM FOR HER RESCUE (A GROUP OF HOTEL GUESTS WHO HELPED HER TO SAFETY).

    Dear Excellence Hotel

HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE MUST DIE"

    end of quote

  • I knew Hady and he always had a huge smile. He's one of the more pleasent dudes on this planet. I got the news yesterday (Saturday) and couldn't believe it. I know by know that the ocean has claimed this bro. Its hard to believe. I hope to see you again Hady.

  • Fuck That Shit!!! Dominicans Represent!

  • Yes, Dominicans are amazing people. Felt like home when I've been there, and this is another reason why we should make another clear distinction between resorts, local authorities, and decent common people that really, trully are amazing.

It's not the Dominican people's fault for what happened to Hady, but it is the Resort, the local authorities, and our officials that failed to respond to the matter in useful time.

  • FUKin idiotas!!! idiotas!!!!... do as Chile did in Antartica to save those Canadians turist over there.. be more samrt and stop talkign anlo shit and shit ans shit!!! about many shits

!! and crap act do something for other!!! fukin monkeys fukin no brainers!!

  • this is so fukin embarrising fuk!! all of those fukin dumb officials in our country, fuck the lazy assholes that dont do shit!! FUck Fuck!!!!!!!!!!!.... save the poor lives of those people!... the goverment has to paid for this fuck!!!!

  • he is died by now how the fuck will he live? no way man. rip

  • It's not only a call for help friend, this indeed has served it's purpose, but at the moment it is also a call for the acknoledgement of the lack of safety measures in so many high end vacationing places that are ultimately death traps for turists. Too many people have lost their lives when all you need to do to avoid this is sooo little.

  • Warning signs, lifeguards on the beach, and lifesaving equipment should be a must not wishful thinking.

Hady did the most noble thing a man can do, he jumped to the rescue of another human being. He will always be in our thoughts and hearts the generous person that he was, our good brother and friend.

  • James Mcdonald was the man quan try to save he was buried today. its really sad 1 man is dead and the other still missing. all im saying is that maybe the other man family dont know everything thats going on and maybe they could help out. D.R. need to do something to keep there tourist save. its sad to say IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY IN D.R.

  • the dominicantoday paper said james mcdonald This is the info a friend of his posted it. The wake will be held on Friday from 2 -- 4pm and 7 -- 9pm at the Bergen Funeral Service located at 232 Kipp Avenue, Hasbrouck Heights, NJ 07604 Phone: 201-343-7900.The funeral held on Saturday at 11am at the Assumption Church located at 91 Maple Avenue, Morristown, NJ 07960 Phone: 973-539-2141. maybe they could help since Quan did die trying to help him.

  • So sad it happened 9 meters from the shore. It's no use blaming the Canadian embassy (> 100 miles away)nor the Dominican authorities (often useless anyhow = death toll after Noel and Olga). The incident required help at once; death occurs within minutes in those waters.

Humans failed to be human enough to help.

Life guards may have prevented the accident and the hotel´s management is to blame. Here nobody accepts any responsibility whatsoever; "no tengo la culpa" is all you'll ever hear.

  • For all my Domicans look at this comment!! open your fukin eyes and lest be prepare to be embarred from the outside world! someone has to do something before i get crazy!!! and make a mistake! deport all those lazy ass biches in our cuntry that dont doo crap!!!! :0 this is madness!!

  • ..cont'd...It won't help you with you friend but it could help others. It might also help to get Canadian Consular representation in the area (the Embassy in Santo Domingo is a long way away from Punta Cana). Here where I live in Puerto Plata, Canadians have an Hon. Consul who is very good - he has lived here over 20 years & has long standing relationships with the authorities. A presence like that in Punta Cana might have meant a very speedy response.

  • Thank you Ginnie,

    "Marius,

Deep condolences. To those who feel your campaign to publicise what happened is fruitless, I would disagree."..

"My husband and I were at the resort when this happened. We did not see any signs on the beach warning of an undertow or riptide. Although there were 2 lifeguard towers, I didn't see any lifeguards in them before this happened. There were no rescue boats (would it kill them to have a sea-doo handy to pull someone in?). Lots of people were in the water swimming so it's not like Hady and the other man were out there as a couple of daredevils."

"Our hearts go out to Hady's family. My family were at the Excellence Punta Cana at the end of November and saw first hand how little the hotel management cared about their guests. Myself and a few members of my family noticed a woman drowning. That woman is alive today because an English man on his homeymoon responded to our cries for help.

  • When my sister ran to shore yelling for help all of the hotel employees turned their back to her or walked away. We finally found a flotation device wedged out of sight under the empty lifeguard tower and my family members and 2 other guests who came to help got the flotation device to the English man who managed to swim in with the woman.

  • Now less than a month later one man has drowned and this man is missing. This hotel has a lot to answer for. They sell themselves as a ocean resort, charge top dollar and take no responsibility for the safety of their guests. They have NO rescue procedures in place & dont feel that they need to."

  • I hope your search goes well. It's sad that such thing had to happen to a guy like Hady. We were friends long time ago, but unfortunatelly didn't keep in touch lately. I send my prayers to family, girlfriend and Hady, wherever he might be right now. If I can help in any way , please don't hesitate to let me know.

  • Como dominicano lamento mucho el caso

  • Gracias hermano. Non esta bueno para nadie lo sabio, solo che ahora deberemos hacer algo para che cosas como esto non pasan mas.

  • Once again im really sorry, but im wondering if the family of the other man offer there help to you guys. Im wishing the best to his girlfriend cause i would be going crazy. i like i said in the other comment i was staying in the same hotel and everyone that knew about it was very sad. I really hope they find him.

  • I am sad indeed, sad because our good friend and brother is gone, and sad because the people that had the moral obligation to lend a hand and help failed us soo miserably.

  • IM sorry i wasnt talking about you being a sad person i was talking about that user name katanngand for talking stupid. but you still havent answer my qusetion about that man family helping you guys out?

  • Marius, try to ignore the comments from these few disrespectful posters. They are plainly too young to have experienced loss and tragedy themselves. They will, as a natural part of getting older. Then they will come to understand about empathy and respect.

  • And many thanks to our Dominican friend for his lesson in bad grammar and total lack of respect.

  • I was wondering when you people will show up.

The man went for his first swim with his girlfriend. They arrived on Thursday, Dec 27th, and dissapeared Friday, Dec. 28th 2006. He was neither drunk, nor impared and I only dignify you with an answer because the behind is you and you've proven that too me.

  • Let me make you think ...By not assuming responsability for something doesn't necessarily exonerate one of all blaim.A resort with so many people, serving alcohol ...build up the moral responsability of such an establishment to look after their guests. The Excellence Resort and Spa in Punta Cana had no such measures in place, no lifeguards and no plan to deal with the situation. To my knowledge this happens frequently, and the resort start even refuse to assist upon request.

  • So what big deal asshole. I see how this freaking tourist from Canada get wasted in DR and the kind of shit that you people do went are fucking drunk. I been in Canada many times and you people don't act the same way, so from now on before you get in the water learn how to swim ...

    PS: Fuck you

  • I will not justify your comment with the specifics of our friends tragedy, other than saying that you must not be able to read otherwise you will know the specifics, nor do you know how to write, therefore you must learn these before you can become a member of society otherwise you will continue to be an ignorant, little-minded, un-cultered person that lives under rocks, grow up and a have respect for others unlike the respect you have for yourself.

  • You just said the true I LIVE IN CANADA....

  • your and idiot. Think before you post stupid comments.

  • ok why do idiotic rejects with the i.q. of a rock even bother to speak their minds. And buddy you are a retard. I knew Hady and he was one of the sweetest and most awesome people around. It is tragic that something aweful like this had to happen.

  • YOU ARE A SAD PERSON.

  • Im really sorry for what happen to your friend. I happen to get to the same hotel the next day that happen. my parent are Dominican and im sorry to say that everything in D.R. is about MONEY. I know that the man he try to save is dead and its sad. but maybe that man family should help you guys out since he's missing or maybe dead for trying to save him. i Hope he is alive.

  • Hi

I am Tiffany's cousin and my heart goes out to her and Hady's family and friends during this terrible time. Our thoughts and prayers are constantly with all of you and hope for only the best. It is so wonderful to know however, how much love and support there is from all of you in this time of need and know in my heart that they are in the best hands with all you surrounding them. If there is anything we can do, please do not hesitate to let us know.

  • friends

DR is a country where everything works whith influence so if your embassy do not make pressure on the local autority i dont think they gonna do anything ....what are the embassy for? when you need them they dont help. but they get paid whith your tax money

    Gracias.

  • im sorry to hear that man. But, a friend of mine died in Juan Dolio, he drowned cuz of the lack of equipments and logistic from the authorities. Anyways, if there anything that i can do.. help u with paperwork or sumthin.. let me know..

  • You are already helping us by posting and expressing your support.

    Thank you, keep in touch.

  • No, but i mean, i live here in DR, so if u need to contact some ppl or need help communicating... im here, just let me know.

you are a inconsiderate piece of *****, lets throw one of your family members out there and see how you react....******** "

  • Lexy, I thank you for your energy and support, but for the better purpose of this post please let's keep it civil.

I was hoping for a debate, so let's have a constructive one, one in which there will be a positive outcome and we will not be ridiculed.

Please do post again, thank you

  • i hope they find you soon.

  • It is sad to know that there are so many insensitive assholes. Wait till they get into troubles themselves. Please set up something where people can participate through email. May be we can each send an email to the DR Canadian Embassy to show our concerns.

  • I do like constructive debate; however, I do hope themselves, or their close ones will never face what we are facing. Having that said, I think your comments and support here is already working so keep it up.

If anyone would like to send a more personalized message please do email me here and I will most certainly attach that to the future petition that we are working on.

Lots of love and thanks go to all of you folks out there for showing your support to our endeavour.

  • Why at this point still arguing what Hady did was appropriate or not? The important is that the government & authority should make every endeavour to find & rescue him, as someone like him does not deserve the cruel fact that the authority has not offered any real assistance.

  • my thoughts and prayers are with Hady and his family. he's lucky to have friends like you.

  • Good luck man

my prayers are with you, your family, and friends

  • I hope this news is not true.

    Best wishes

  • To all those who are so easily critizing Haddy's friends for critizing both the CDN and DR governments, would you all feel that way if it was YOUR friend, boyfriend, husband, son, brother, nephew out there?!!! Haddy is one of the nicest people you could ever meet and it would be an honour to know him, as I do.

  • I heard about this on Global News this morning. I hope that this ordeal has a positive outcome, and soon. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

  • True about when travelling abroad but there is a Canadian Embassy there and one of the duties of the embassy is to assist Canadians when in trouble, however that may be. If our Government can go to a war torn Country and pull out dual citizens than they by all means should help Citizens who are in need in this manner.

  • I can understand your wanting help in locating your friend, but what is it you expect someone from the Canadian embassy to do? You're talking about a 3rd world country so don't expect a search and rescue hovercraft to be on call like back at home.

While it's a noble thing Hady tried to do, please don't blame the Canadian Government or the local authorities for his mishap.

  • "His mishap" ?!? The man jumped to the rescue of another human being and in doing so maybe he lost his life. Friends and family are not giving up on him, as our officials did. We needed help, to the simplest kind, translator, expertise in dealing with the local authorities ...anything.

Why should not one criticize the way this was handled. Would you agree that this lack of involvement is natural? ...or decent? ...or to be expected in the future as well in similar cases?!?

  • If I may ask you something, while I do agree that a 3rd world country is what it is, are you implying in any way that the Canadian Embassy in Santo Domingo may be excused for acting like 3rd world officials just on the bases of their presence in such a country.

I most certainly am asking for your reply sir, and please make a very compelling one.

  • I meant nothing derogatory by the term mishap because that's what this is ...a mishap.

I agree that the Canadian officials shouldn't act like 3rd world officials, but I've lived in the DR for many years, so I know how slow and horrendous any type of service or request for help can be. Canadian officials don't wield a whole lot of power down there, it's a 3hour+ drive to Punta Cana at best, I don't know what they could have done to help your friend.

  • The hotel resort are the one's that dropped the ball, they should be the ones with the translator to help with dealing with local authorities etc, because in a situation like this, time is of the essence.

Having a lifeguard with a jet ski available at a minimum might well have saved your friend from this horrible mishap. Perhaps they will have one now.

My heart goes out to Hady and his family.

  • his mishap? lets throw your mother out there and see what you have to say then...mother******

  • My mom knows that you don't fight a rip current when caught in one, that you swim parallel to the shore and then head back to shore when out of the current.

Snide remarks are not so damn sexy.

  • it's not the governments fault that your friend (possibly) drowned, and when you go abroad you are subject to that countries laws, if you don't think that a place is safe to visit then don't go, didn't you notice the lack of lifeguards before you swam there, and this was an off limits area for swimming

  • I am sorry I did not swim there, and yes I am aware that I am under different laws when in a different country.

Again, my friend was not swimming off limits, please read the articles.

I am also aware of the fact that if you're in trouble in a different country an Embassy is supposed to come to your aid.

  • This was shocking to say the least when I heard it was Hady Quan. I used to work with him, geniune sweet person. This is I am sure, why he lent a helping hand. I am not sure I know anyone who was in this same situation they would not have entered the water. I can't believe the ignoramus posts I am reading, fellow canadians ... I HOPE NOT

I second the post re: a story of survival, and his family/friends are in my thoughts

    0x0x

  • Hady's actions were noble and it is a tragedy that he paid the price he did for his courage. Having said that, what is it you want the embassy to do? It is not the role of government to protect people from their own decisions or actions whilst willingly travelling in a foreign country.

  • It's NEVER nice to learn that someone's travel has been interrupted with tragedy or hardship, especially when it involves fatalities. However, the harsh reality is that as a world traveler you alone are largely responsible for your own security and safety. It doesn't mean that you have given up your nationality but you MUST understand that there IS risk associated with such action and it is your responsibility to take care of yourself and your traveling companions.

  • Yes, it's true that we are responsible for ourselves, AZiCit818. But it is also true that we are all in this life together, which means we should help one another when we are in trouble. That means the resort needs to have safety measures in place for its guests, and the local government also. As well, our Canadian government representatives in-country also need to have effective resources in place for Canadians in trouble.

  • I don't think you are going to get much sympathy for the level of assistance you think that you should be getting here back home. While most of us do feel bad to what happened to your friend you should be mourning him and saying good things about him on the radio.. All we keep hearing the disappointment you have of the support you've received so far from our Gov't.

  • It's no longer dissapointment sir, it's frustration and disbelief.

What level of assistance I expect? A decent level would be most welcome, it beats the hell out of non-existant support.

    Thank you.

  • Too often in these situations people quickly accuse the system of not being adequately prepared to offer assistance. This is totally unreasonable. You LEFT home! You CANNOT expect the same level of assistance you would find within your country's own borders because:

    A) there are obvious geographical restrictions that YOU have created (ie. distance)

    B) the level of assistance that may be necessary is an enormous expense dependent upon how far from home you have traveled

  • The excitement and thrill of adventure often precludes any sense of caution, in addition to a false sense of security when the world is only a plane ticket away. Just because it is easy access though does not mean that there isn't any danger associated with traveling outside of your own country. It is acceptable to look for help from your government but completely unacceptable to be critical of the level of assistance being received.

  • Firstly, this is sad news and a tragedy for all family and friends affected by these events. If you responde with negative comments about the government though you are mistaken. When traveling abroad, YOU, as a traveler, MUST accept that there are inherent risks associated with your actions.

  • I do agree you make some compelling points; however, Hady and Tiffany were swimming 30' into the water off the beach of Excellence Resort in Punta Cana.

I did not ask for the entire Canadian armada to join the search. I was merely asking for help, as my friends and Hady's family has been for all these days. Help can come in many ways: translating, easing up contact with authorities, exerting some pressure on the local authorities and so on.

  • The problem resides in the lack of help sir, not in the amount I was asking for.

Responsability, unlike others I think we cannot be acused with the lack there off. We were responsable enough to assume the leadership of the search and rescue mission and we did not fail our brother and friend when he most needed it.

Thank you for your compelling points and I do hope you'll share more of your views on the matter with us.

  • good luck ill sign the petition

  • Hope you find your friend. But why don't YOU head down there and try to find him yourself! It was NOT the Canadian Prime Minister who forced your friend to go down there and it wasn't the Canadian Prime Minister who forced your friend to go swimming.

  • This is posted because people like YOU work in Gov. We pay taxes and their paycheques, they have to help, they are there because of our votes, we should be protected by them anywhere in the world.

  • Pretty insensitive post, Dave, as are some of the other posts here, while we're worrying if Hady is still alive or not. But you're right; nobody "forced" Hady to go into the water to save a drowning man. He chose that path because he is a heroic human being, unlike the vast majority of people, who stand by in these situations and do nothing to help. So let's have some respect for the man, at this difficult time, and not criticize his actions.

  • How sweet of you to say that. Well, we have more than a dozen members, family and friends, and hired divers, choppers and boats but it was not enough support from the begining from local authorities and our officials in Santo Domingo.

Thank you though for the advice, dully noted.

If I may suggest you read the news links in description area, it might be an eye opener to the frustration and disbelief I felt while filming this video.

  • I hope this becomes one of those amazing survival stories. Be positive

  • best wishes...

canada usually kicks ass and i am proud to be canadian. but having heard this:

    it sickens me.

    dylan

  • I wish you luck

  • We are deeply concerned about this, and if we had the money we'd be down there helping you right now. This is devastating news to us.

  • Dont give up. THe canadian govt must come to our aid instead of helping out in useless wars. Fight for our people. Lets make an effort Canadian govt!!!!At least aid in the costs of the search.

  • Totally agree!

Despite what Canada always says herself as a humanitarian country, how much those humane officers really care about our people??

  • I am ashamed, embarrassed and extremely disappointed that our own Canadian government has not taken this seriously. Waiting 5 days before they started talking to the local authorities is rediculous! They simply don't care.

  • Best wishes =)

  • My thoughts and wishes go out to you and your family Marius , They need all the help they can get to bring awareness to the goverments that this can not happen again...please sign/leave a comment

  • I am saddened to see the lack of cooperation from the Canadian government. Let's all hope for best for Hady. My condolences to the friends and family.

  • My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family & your friends. If there is anything more you need, let me know. It is time the gov't takes some initiative, and does something about Hady and finding him. I hope all gov't officials see this youtube & then do something. Its just awful they haven't done anything.

  • I wish you all the best in finding Hady and I know this amazing initiative on the part of all of you will make a difference for the future. The government needs to step up and face the music. They're probably scared to take responsibility so late too but better late than never. If I remember correctly, a recent speech by the Governor General for 2008 highlighted the need for Canadian unity!

  • It's shocking. I can't believe how passive and useless the Canadian government, embassy, and so-called "Excellence" resort have been. You'd think they'd all have contingencies to deal with things like this. Thank God for friends like you who have gone to great lengths to search for Hady. It's scary to think what would happen if someone *didn't* have such dedicated and committed friends. Let's hope and pray for the safe return of Hady and all those involved in the search--they're all heroes.

  • thats awful that the canadian government has not done anything, hoping for the best.

  • I'm appalled that something like this can happen and nothing is being done by our government.

  • An absolute disgrace. If it was someone in their family every effort would be taken. I hope he is found alive with a wild tale to tell. I am disgusted at the resort as well, they should have made every effort that they could. I hope that people see that they didn't do more and never stay there. It may not be someone that you know, but it is a family member, a friend, son and so on of someone out there.

  • Hady Quan and those who love him have been failed by the Dominican goverment and by his own government. May Hady be saved and live to personally relate his horror of waiting and waiting for rescue, to be able to ask the uncomfortable questions himself to the officials that did nothing. Until then we as Canadian citizens and Dominican citizens need to ask the questions and demand change. May Hady become a hero once over again for being the catalyst to fix a broken system.

  • I'm ashamed of my government's lack of support to a Canadian in distress, especially to one who has heroically risked his life to help a stranger at sea. Let's hope for the best for Hady.

  • Our thoughts are with you Marius. We also hope that our Government will finally step up and do what it's supposed to,Take care of it's people.
