AFAIK, the ISL 330 has bigger injectors and the engine computer is programmed to utilize the larger injectors, other than that the engines are the same.
I think Muni uses Sunrise Systems too because Sunrise does the automated systems for many public transportation. Anyways cool vid. Hope to see more vids of VTA.
The good DD engines are the 2 stroke ones such as the 6V92TA! Not only do those Detroits sound better than the S-50, they also have more low end power and run MUCH smoother than a S-50!
Ive heard the Detroit S60 in a MCI D before (Golden Gate Transit, route 72x), even got a recording of one! I'd say these busses have their own unique sound IMO. I'm also a fan of the Cummins engines, and the worst engine in a bus is the Detroit S50, mainly because its a 4cyl diesel and shakes the bus at idle. Also, inline-6 diesels just sound cool!
the series 50 is a good engine for a bus but a bad engine for a semi truck. The cummins ISB engine is a 4 banger and yet with it's 275hp,it performes jus as good as it's 6 cylinder ISC counterpart. That D60LF is straight ISL...And if you like Cummins engines, you'd love the ole skool L-10 used in Flexible Metros.
The Cummins ISB also comes in a inline 6 of 5.9l, found most commonly in the Dodge trucks! We have the Cummins L-10 powered Flxible busses round here as well but I have yet to catch one...
If I had a choice between Cummins ISL and Detroit S50 I would choose the Cummins ISL!
Mississauga Transit has 1997 D60LFs with the S50 and 2001 D60LFs with the S50EGR and they're terribly weak and even worse when the A/C is running. We're getting 35 D60LFRs this spring coming in with the Cummins ISL and the B500R6 transmission. Should be sweet.
Another story about the weak S50EGR engines! The Golden Gate Transit busses in San Francisco have those same engines and I always see them slow way down going up the slight inclines on 101 South going to San Francisco! They seem to slow down to about 45mph! The Samtrans busses with the Cummins engines however don't seem to struggle on the freeway...
Ok I need a way to send it, its a big file because its like an hour long or so, MP3 format. I think its too big to send via email. I have MSN and AIM maybe I could send it that way?
What is the difference between the Cummins ISL 280hp and the ISL 330hp?

The 22/Rapid 522 make a nice pair of lines together from Eastridge to Palo Alto. You've outdone yourself! =]

damn 9:05a you woke up mad early to record this bus sound

I didn't think that Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority would have New Flyer buses.
They normally have TMC RTS, Flxible Metro, Gillig Phantom, and Gillig Advantage Low Floor.
Sulaco516 4 years ago
They bought these new Flyers because Gillig does not make a 60foot articulated bus.

Understood.

Sunrise Systems does the automated voice on the buses and display/

Cool! I wonder about the MUNI busses, those seem to have a different system than these VTA ones.

To Detoyato: I accidentaly hit the spam button :-(
Anyways, these bus engines nowadays are controlled by electrical wires, even the acceleration I believe, so you could say it is drive by wire!
The steering hoses are flexible enough to sustain the bending of the bus as it turns.
jfrog1983 4 years ago
Howd they control the engine from thw front half while the engine is out at the rear half....Bending control linkaga or drive by wire?

Sounds good. It kinda sounds like a Detroit Diesel Series 60. I'm used to riding the MCI D4500's all the time lol.

but the DD S50 sounds way better than Cummins engines...

By contrast, the Cummins engines are actually cleaner than the Detroit Diesels.

unfortunately for DD, thats very true...
