@ContraCommando Actually, I don't agree with that. I'd rather have a reviewer judge a game by today's standards because I want to know whether or not to pick it up today, not 1992.
@ViciousAlienKlown Agreed, i still remember those day's when i did the time trialls over and over to beat my friend :-D The framerate may be low, but the game did not loose out on the superb playabillity, and everything the arcade version had, was also on the Genesis!
From a realistic perspective, Super Monaco GP doesn't compare to F1 2011. The only thing it has going for it is nostalgic value.
This is like comparing a bolt action rifle from WWI to a modern mil-spec assault rifle. The old one isn't necessarily bad, but the new one wins in virtually every aspect.
@iceteaguy From a realistic perspective it would be wise to compare a 1992 game with a 2011 game. As a gamer, I NEVER ever use the nostalgia card. That is the mistake only casual gamers (who have no respect for old school games since they were brought up in the new school era) make. About the bolt action, it depends on the person using it. No one can stop a bullet.
You're looking through rose tinted glasses, and your name clearly displays your proud bias toward older games.
Both games were designed to offer a realistic perspective, and to say it's wrong to compare games from 1992 to games from 2011 is to say it's wrong to look at the advancement of technology which is just gross ignorance.
I've been playing games for over fifteen years. Tenure or obsession do not increase merit in the field of reason.
Btw, if you really think a bolt action rifle from WWII would be a combat effective weapon in a modern firefight, you have no idea what modern firefights are like.
Anything you could do with an M1903 could be done better with a Mk16, with the exception of maybe a bayonet attack, or splintering the enemy.
@iceteaguy IMHO Super Monaco GP is still very playable; the game's strength is it's engrossing career mode and the system of picking rivals and progressing through teams. Visually SMGP may have aged in terms of its foreground but the backdrops are still stunning today; the subtle hue of the sky is a particular contrast with the garish colors found in most driving games right up to the 128bit era. Does it still stand as a Simulation? Nope. As an arcade racer? Absolutely Yes.
More engrossing or fun? Perhaps. My point was stating that F1 2011 is a better simulation racer, hands down.
You might suggest it's unfair to compare them because one definitely falls into the arcade genre where the other is definitely more sim, but that's only if you discount that all racers before Gran Turismo were essentially arcade racers.
Fact is, SMGP was as sim as it came back in that day, and F1 2011 unarguably provides a better simulation.
Actual driving wasn't all that complex, but ohh what fun to be had.
All about the rival mode, moving the way up the teams was one of the greatest hooks ever!!
The game was so easy to lick, you could win in even the bottom team, blocking grand tourismo style... and if you were that way inclined,, allways a Fun challenge dumping ayrton into the bottom team,
Quality game, played it to death back in the day buying it when it came out.. thanks man:)
I expected this game to be just as well converted as they did with OutRun., So no sprite scaling, but enough roadside detail to capture the look of the arcade. How wrong i was. It may have been a reasonably good game, but i still was dissapointing to me, as i'd expected the same quallity as the OutRun conversion.
@musicmaniac1965 I was initially disappointed by the visuals but the huge career mode more than makes up for that with 16 tracks to master, each with gorgeous backdrops. and 7-speed gear shit, as well as very customisable controls.
I've got the Master System version of this knocking around somewhere, must have been a EU only version (the Master System did much better in the UK, at least. It outsold the NES here for a bit). The graphics aren't anywhere near as shiney, but it plays well enough.
The review doesn't mention it, but one of the biggest additions in this game versus the first one, or most Genesis racing games, is that it has battery save, so your progress and best times are saved. It's a great feature to have.
As for the game itself though, I've just always found sim racers kind of boring, and yeah, it badly needed music too... if I had to play a Sega F1 game, the Sega CD one's probably my favorite; it's still boring, but the Mode 7-style graphics engine is cool.
The engine sounds are like bees because it's always garbled (like almost every other voice sample on the system). Now if only I knew why most voice samples are garbled...
Curiosity: In 91 Sega wanted to know Senna's opinion about the new Barcelona's track but he said he can't give his opinion about it untill he raced and promissed to give his opinion after the race. After it he recorded his opinion about the track and sent it in a Digital Audio Tape (via Federal Express) to keep the game development in schedule.
