so were there resource to make canoes etc they couldn't then leave the island in search of another place, and also there fishing would of suffered some what as well... now you could only result to diving/fishing within the shallow lagoon

Also they say that when the people first arrived on Rapa nui the vast palms and forest the fruit and local seafood that the people thought they had no need to farm animals such as chickens, pigs etc ... but as they cut down more and more trees to construct and transport the moa the island was less sheltered to salt spray from the sea which landed further in on the island then before which made harvest of fruit and veges more and more difficuilt ... and once the tress were gone

The islanders used up all there natural resources, add to that pests such as rats and also the disease which also hit the island when other cultures came to the island for a number of reasons ... really really interesting story about there people. They turned on eachother as well, even today you can find caves that have limited sunlight with full gardens growing ... you had to hide and resort to growing and living in caves...

Maybe the rocks were in place, washed out from the volcanic site by a tidal wave, like in 1960. They must have cleared the others out. Has anybody try to plant a tree in the island? I don't think they were as dumb as we make them.
