     Miss Carter

  • Maravilhosa!!!

  • maravilhosa!

  • Betty Carter is eternally astounding.

  • There has never been, nor will there ever be, another Betty. Aw, Betty, I miss you so much...

  • I've always liked Betty. She's definitely an original with her phrasing and vocal timbres. She's one of the only people I can stand to hear scat; it's done badly so often. Betty is greatness! 8-)

  • Betty is great on this video. I have the CD entitled "Dropping Things." Her rhythm section is outstanding!

  • Spectacular

  • I saw her in concert not terribly long before her death. It was definitely one of my life's great experiences.

  • none like her

  • MY Favorite vocalist EVER!! She was sooo jazzy with so much style and origination.

I heard of her in the '80s on cos's show too. :)

Love "Look What I Got" too.

  • MY Favorite vocalist EVER!! She's jazzy and got soooo much style.

  • I was introduced to her talents by watching The Cosby Show when I was younger.

  • Go Betty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Her vocals amaze me

  • for me she was probably the best jazz singer I've heard

  • I've arrived via a reference in comparison with Kurt Elling. That's what's so wonderful about jazz - it's a continual voyage of discovering something else of greatness..

  • i got into her and jazz because of SNL she was on an episode and i fell in love

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!

  • no words...perfect!

  • ms carter is an amazing musician -jazz greetings -rhsc nyc

  • love betty carter

  • true

  • Betty Carter was one of the cookingest singers I ever heard. She should be listened to by every would be jazz vocalist. Loved this woman!

  • I remember seeing her on the Cosby Show when I was a teenager singing I Got A Man, and I've never forgotten her beautiful voice. I've looked for it here on Youtube, but, alas, no ne has uploaded it. I think I'll swipe my dad's. He's a jazz nut. And, the older I get, the more I appreciate it-especially with the crap we're forced to listen to today. She's amazing.

  • crazy......a beautiful person with an amazing voice,,her version of "surrey with the fringe on top" from her live at the village vanguard will make your jaw drop.

  • she sings with her whole body. and her scat is unmatched. yes, ma'am.

  • She drops her arm and it`s all there. The magic the magic!

  • WOW

  • the Incomparable Betty Carter !!!! Absolutely phenomenal !!! As she sings you can recognize that she is extremely intimate with each and every note! This is REAL MUSIC !!!! Mon Dieu!

  • Now, THIS is music. Betty Carter is unmatched...period.

  • Way ahead of her time as far as singers go. She ain't afraid to go "outside".

  • She is bad (as in good). The notes she finds, hits, and hears are amazing to me. I would climb out on that vocal tree and break branches from my vocal fall. I am not well versed in her music, which means I have some music shopping to do in order to catch up.

  • You're so great, Mrs Carter!

  • nice piano player indeed

  • oh boy what fancy clothes she has?

    good luck

  • Much Love Betty carter was one of a kind!

  • does anyone know when this was performed, or when it was originally recorded?

  • The name of the recording is "Dropping Things". You may have to to download it from Verve's website.

Y vaya swing!!!

  • Band please...

  • @ianmattl Marc Cary, piano, Dwayne Burno, bass, Greg Hutchinson, drums.

  • marc cary on piano

  • Much Love to Betty!!!

  • A truly amazing artist...Betty stands alone.

  • her style was so unique...especially her scatting. betty and ella were the best to ever scat.

  • Very true with Anita O'day at the 1st runner's up spot

  • who's the pianist?

  • aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...............

    the essence of cooooooooool......betty !

  • Everyone else is just humming along with the tune.... Betty Lives!

  • yes, this album, DROPPING THINGS, is among her FINEST...hard to get...think something went down with the distributors...that music business drama...but THIS cd is THE ONE!...and Betty was/is among the best COMPOSERS OF ALL TIME!...period!

  • I just got the "Dropping Things" CD.

Man, I really do believe it's her best work.

The band is incredible. The rhythm section is SO swinging, and she also has Craig Handy and Freddie Hubbard there with her. It's an amazing album.

But then, what would you expect from someone like Betty?

She was - quite simply - the best pure, true Jazz singer that ever lived ~

  • @MarkR1957 I totally agree. Ive had the album since '91 and I've worn it out and had to get another one. the rythmn section swings!!!

  • Yo!!!!!! This is one of her funkiest albums, 'Droppin' Things'. Too bad Craig Handy wasn't there to solo. He blew on the album.

  • She's is so missed. I love Betty Carter.

  • Betty Carter...you rock!!!!

  • Betty Carter...you rock!!!!

  • My menter, mistress master. No One like the great Betty. Stunning

  • you know, she WROTE this song.

  • incredible. incredible.

  • greatest jazz singer ever!

  • couldn't agree more

  • I find it very sad that there are not FAR more people looking at and commenting on this video.

Betty Carter was a marvel, a genius, and one of the people who really tried to keep Jazz alive.

I won't look myself, because I don't want to become ill, but I'll bet that any Brittany Spears video on here has 1000's of viewers and comments on it.

Wake up, children -- THIS is what a REAL singer sounds like ~

  • It a fact of life that no-one ever lost money by underestimating public taste...Betty's a true standout player & performer....good taste is its own reward, plus being lucky enough to even hear Betty is a great thing...that's life. PS: I'm lucky enough to also like Brittney's work..she's a cool dancer

  • ((((mark))))

  • Unbeleivable! Perfection!

  • The Best. No one could touch her.

    Beyond catagory.

    Superb ~

  • I LOVE HER! I wish I had the opportunity to go to her school!

  • You're going there as we speak!!!

  • ur SO right!

  • BumpS

Check out Lily Dior doing Compared to What

  • she shut him up quick and sent him on his way. betty bebop true to the art!

  • Yo Betty!!!!!!!

  • The legend...Betty Carter

  • She was so great--especially live which is where it matters most. Great clip.

  • gosh this is the fastest version of dropping things i've heard! bc is the Best!

  • Awesome!

  • my mentor...i went to her school of music in manhatten...god i miss her!! thanx

  • Betty Carter is my favorite jazz singer and my greatest influence as I continue singing jazz. I was captured on video during an improvisational interaction with her at a jazz workshop she conducted in the early 1990's. I appreciate her positive comments on my singing and her comments that singers should develop as individuals and not copy other singers. I will forever be grateful for seeing her in live performances and will acknowledge her on my soon to be released gospel jazz & jazz CD.

  • Betty refused to compromise her art. When others were selling out jazz, for fame and fortune, Betty endured. She sometimes languished in obscurity. But she remained true to her art form, jazz music. She was truly unique. Betty Carter remains one of the greatest jazz vocalist ever.

  • The most articulate and thorough scat of our lifetime. I once heard her scat for 25 minutes!!!! Betty Bee-Bop Carter is the best!!

  • The last of the great classic jazz divas, after Billie, Ella, Sarah, and Carmen. She is missed.

  • Cleo is still here and still GOOD> do not miss the chance too see her. The show is solid jazz now, with a small quartet (incl hubby). too much!! Saw her 2 x in the past 2 years,

people were stunned how good she still is.

  • WOW! Thanks for this gem. I am a huge fan, just wish they release Betty Carter's archives on DVD. sigh.

  • thanx so much for this video! thnx thanx thanx!

  • A scat better than all the rest....even better and more innovative than Ella's and Sarah's scat. Betty was in a class of her own. I miss her!

  • I agree.

  • as good but not better. She was the hardest workin singer i have ever seen(and i have seen Tina) out of many, many, many shows. In a folk club 1984, in a LA, she sang for 2 1/2 hours without a break!!!!!! And...she sang hard!!!! The audience was somewhere between Venus and Mercury by the time the show ended.

  • Check out Mel Torme..he's a genius

  • more!!! my God what a powerhouse
