Are they the same band? No. The Byrds were American-- the Birds, British. They were contemporary to one another, and the Birds did sue the Byrds over the name similarity. This referenced in the song "Eight Miles High."
Are they equal bands? Hard to compare the two since they focused on the opposite sort of sixties rock, but I'd say neither is better than the other.
Brand new version of this song recorded by the relaunched Birds featuring original lead singer Ali MacKenzie available from thebritishbirds.co.uk NOW!

Sadly Ronnie is an alcoholic, now has a Brazilian bird who is 30 so at least a mere 33 years younger. He is always pissed, saw him guest with Sheryl Crow years ago, completely hammered onstage, bit sad.
Is it me,or I hear a very close similitude in the guitar riff to "Purple Haze"?In particular the studio version.I wonder if Jimi took inspiration from this song,as the stinging sound and the intention of the guitar riff are the same!
Hey, I am desperate...I love love love this song, and I love Ron Wood. Does anybody know where I can download it, because I can't find it anywhere!! Thanks. XX
Lemmy has said on more than one occasion that the Birds were one of the best live bands he ever saw. Motorhead's cover of "Leaving Here" was, in fact, a tribute to the Birds' version.

Isn't there a story in his biog where he travelled down to London in the mid 60s, turned up at the Wood household but Ron and Art(woods) were gigging so their mum offered Lemmy the couch to crash out on. Ah, the romance of RnR! Talkin of the period, dig Lemmy's fretwork on "Alright" by the Rockin' Vickers. It's smokin'.

Too bad he got elbowed out in late '66 for taking the initiative and trying to organise band affairs. Btw tell him that I think the pronto skinhead gangster look they were going for shortly before he left was well cool.
took me quite a few 'listens' to filter out the silly dialogue from the film and actually follow the last bit of the song... and what a great song it is! Shame it seems to be gone for ever...
this is a good video, but the comments are really sour and useless! And if I offend by saying so, there is no comeback, I've laced this comment with 20 rhetorical traps!
The actual name of the song was "Cause, I need some Loving" and it was supposed to be out on reaction, but the band broke up, and the single was shelved. I love the song and wish Mr. Stigwood would finally release it, with the other songs they did as Bird's Birds.
They attempted to locate it while putting together the "Rare British Birds" CD comp in the late 90's and we unable to locate it. They did find "Granny rides" which was recorded much later.
Kim Gardner, the bassist played with Tony Ashton in 'Creation', and later with 'Ashton, gardner and Dyke'. Ally McKenzie, the vocalist was pretty good!
We all used to hang out in West Drayton or Yiewsley. Pip Williams was the leader of 'The Renegades'...and he ended up as a producer. I recall he worked with Graham Bonnett. Ron was a great guitarist even back then in the very early 60's, when the Who were still the Detours, or the High Numbers.
Would you all stop talking about when you were in bands in the 60's etc...i'm getting jealous! I was only born in '77,why was i born so late! Would of loved to have watched all the great bands, the who, small faces, the birds would of been good, what "great" bands do my generation have to look up to? Oasis! Rather listen to Mary Hopkins!
Thanks to garageman for posting this. I love this tune. Can't see it on the Deram collection or on Ron Wood's Anthology. Anyone know if it's available on CD or even vinyl?
Further to my previous posts. If you can find the March 2007 edition of Record Collector, there's a great article by Ali McKenzie. He is auctioning off some of the rare original Birds posters he has. (I have them all on DVD)
Try to find the cover of That's all I need you for by the Scandanavian band The Event
Ron Wood had the VERY FIRST fuzz box I ever saw - it was the prototype Gary Hurst Tonebender in a black wooded box... ( I had one within weeks of them appearing in shops:-)He had the first Marshall 8 x 12" "coffin" cabinet I saw. He played bar chords with his thumb curled round the neck onto the E string, and this gave both a style and a tone to his playing.
As I idolised Clapton from day one I went out and bought an ice blue Telecaster. He played a blonde one I think. It got me into huge debt. I only had it a little while and the pratt changed to a Gibson!
I used to work in Berrys music store in Dalston. Remember that chain?
I bought a Telecaster because I idolised Ron Wood and he had one. Mine was blonde with a maple neck., 1965 but bought new from Rose Morris in 1966 - for £149..!!! I hated it! Then I got Sam Lee to fit wide frets and a humbucker next to the bridge and set it up, and I loved it.
Turned down a swap for the Tele from Alan Murphy of a black 3-pickup Les Paul custom. Had the Tele stolen in 1979 from Berwick Street Studios, uninsured of course. I do remember Berry's. My band in the 60's was named after an antique shop in the Balls Pond Road , - called Rare Amber.
When I worked in Berrys, there were so many kids who wantd to start a group. We sold so many guitars and amps that got returned after a couple of months. I can remember selling the same guitar 3 or 4 times.
But I got a Les Paul Jnr come back. I bought it but with small fingers the Gibson neck was too wide for comfort. Wish I'd have kept that one!
I met many of the bands when they came in for strings and stuff.
I knew a guy called Louis Cenamo who played with the 5 Dimensions. He came in with Mike Patto, and Viv Prince one day. I went across the road to a hall they were rehearsing in. They were called Chicago Line. Viv Prince spent most of the time reading the paper.
I can remember seeing Rod Stewart with the Dimensions. I think he was their harp player. And NO!! It's not him playing on Millies 'My boy lollipop' It was Pete Hogman.
They moved from what used to be called R 'n B on through Motown (Velvelettes "Needle in a Haystack etc) and I remember them doing Dodie West's "Going Out of My Head" and also "Here Today " from the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album. Liam from Toerag studios in London gave me a fanzine a few years ago with the best Birds article ever.
I once saw them gig in the Pump Rooms in Bath when the gig was switched from Bath Pavilion which was flooded. VERY freaky in this classic formal Georgian room with chandeliers...great gig! They always seemed to be in front of everyone else - the very, very first band I ever heard play "In The Midnight Hour", and that is saying something.
update: i found out that the song is actually on the compilation, but as a hidden song, and its just the audio straight from the scene you see here from the movie, with the girls talking on top of it and all..... a studio version would be welcome
Saw them live many times from 1964 on. My favourite band, brilliant live. Moved from heavy R 'n B to Soul,Motown, and more. Lemmy was their roadie :-)The Telecaster Ron Wood is playing used to belong to Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, and later had a 12-string Danelectro neck on it. Jeff Beck played on their B-side "Daddy Daddy". (Trivia -but hey!)
recordguy4321 . I've been a pro recording engineer/producer/studio person for 32 years, but I have never ever had the same buzz from seeing a band as I got from seeing The Birds - and I'm including seeing Cream, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and The Who, all seen at 60's gigs holding less than 500 people.
Ali the singer still gets up and does a few numbers with my mate Hud Hudsons band. I shot some video the last time I was in England. I've put a couple of clips up on here. Search for The Good Old Boys.
Ali still has a load of unpublished photos, and scans of Birds posters. He sent me the lot on DVD, but asked that I not share them as he wants them for a book. (Just in case anyone asks)
I aslo have a track of That's all I need you for, covered by a Scaninavian band, who's name I just can't remember at the moment.
didiwiz . Do you know what happened to Pete McDaniels the drummer. I've heard nothing except "rumoured to have died from heroin" which I hope isn't true... BTW It's a small world - I used to record Paul Brett who was in Elmer Gantry -so was Hud Hudson , but not sure if at the same time.
Last time I met Ali I asked him about Pete Daniels. Nobody ever heard from him after they broke. Ali also heard the rumour about him beimg dead. Ali swears he was around Sloane Square one day and he saw Daniels outside a coffee shop. He greeted him but Daniels ignored him.
Me and the Hud started playing together when we were kids. Hud's also in The Strawbs. Somewhere on the Strawbs site is Huds bio. There's a pic of us in our very first band.
The Elmer Gantry I knew was, Hud, John Ford, I can't remember the singers name but he later recorded as Stretch
Elmer Gantry... he also fronted a fake version of Fleetwood Mac ( I think for Mac's sometime management) for a tour or so in the early '70s until the real Fleetwoood Mac managed to stop it.
For anyone interested, nothing else exists of the Birds. All the acetates are gone. The clip of them on Ready Steady Win is gone. I don't know if is the same clip but there was a clip of them on wires 'flying' on stage.
From memory the Ready Steady Win appearance was on wires - I seem to remember thinking it was a corny idea! If only camcorders had been around in those days for gigs..:-)I have mislaid the fanzine since moving house, so can't remember it's name. I think they had tracked down Tony Munro, who was latterly running an engineering company up North somewhere. I guess you know Kim Gardner ended up running an English pub in Hollywoood and sadly died in 2001
You can find details of the movie on the top right of the page. There is a compilation CD called The Collectors Guide To Rare British Birds on Deram (564 139-2). It includes all of their four singles (A and B sides) plus rarities. Recommended.
om fkn g the birds were awesome have a mini lp of them need to dig it out now check out a band called the eyes similar in sound a band from london called the embrooks do a couple of their songs
The Embrooks cover "Say Those Magic Words" and which was the Birds fourth (and final) single. The Eyes are good but not as blueswailing as the Birds. Their "Tribute to the Stones" released by the Pupils (get it!) is inept out-of-tune brilliance.
the birds were fantastic, to me their 45's rival the pretty things & the who, i think they were much tougher than the stones at this point in time. i bought their french ep for $100 back in 1982 which was staggering at the time but worth the money. it was a week's pay back then. there was an aussie group called the birds too, the uk & aussie group's both covered say those magic words which is odd. the blonde in the video is elkie brooks i think.
When Ron came to Sydney in '75 with 'The Faces' I gave him a copy of that pathetic Aus Birds version. The 'b' side was 'I can't let Maggie go' by the Honeybus!
This Birds clip encapsulates everything cool about the mid 60's from the lead singer's Ben Sherman to the rhythm guitar's striped jacket to all the cool hairdo's (minus Woody's mullet)and guitars! Ace!
Alli McKenzie on vocals, Tony Munro.., etc.
They had a great little club called 'The Nest' in Yiewsley.

BTW it's definitely McDaniels not Daniels!

Apologies to McDaniels (If he's still around.)
For anyone interested, nothing else exists of the Birds. All the acetates are gone. The clip of them on Ready Steady Win is gone. I don't know if is the same clip but there was a clip of them on wires 'flying' on stage.
Was the fanzine article on them in Ugly Things?
I have that issue.

Fantastic! Where did this clip come from? what movie is this?
Love the lead singer's voice and that great guitar sound -- Why have we not heard of the Birds before? is there any other stuff out there about them?

You can find details of the movie on the top right of the page. There is a compilation CD called The Collectors Guide To Rare British Birds on Deram (564 139-2). It includes all of their four singles (A and B sides) plus rarities. Recommended.

om fkn g the birds were awesome have a mini lp of them need to dig it out now check out a band called the eyes similar in sound a band from london called the embrooks do a couple of their songs
craig1873craig 4 years ago
The Embrooks cover "Say Those Magic Words" and which was the Birds fourth (and final) single. The Eyes are good but not as blueswailing as the Birds. Their "Tribute to the Stones" released by the Pupils (get it!) is inept out-of-tune brilliance.

UNBELIEVABLE!

the birds were fantastic, to me their 45's rival the pretty things & the who, i think they were much tougher than the stones at this point in time. i bought their french ep for $100 back in 1982 which was staggering at the time but worth the money. it was a week's pay back then. there was an aussie group called the birds too, the uk & aussie group's both covered say those magic words which is odd. the blonde in the video is elkie brooks i think.

I have those Aussie Birds covers. The band is absolutely PITIFUL.
Their version of No Good Without You Baby is too crap for words

When Ron came to Sydney in '75 with 'The Faces' I gave him a copy of that pathetic Aus Birds version. The 'b' side was 'I can't let Maggie go' by the Honeybus!

A bit too much like they're copying The Who, but enjoyable nevertheless. Look how young Ron Wood is!!
