I'm a recovering alcoholic and addict, I've been a skinhead for almost two decades. I never got Minor Threat before. Their sound was, um . . . to sober for me to understand it. Also, I didn't want to hear about abstinence without direct knowledge. Now, half a year away from booze, I get the message of personal strength and it is helping to save my life. @chinchillahunter3 for the people involved in the DC scene, being straightedge was a way of being different. being forbidden to play live unless they were marked, reacting against the wanton behavior of glam metal culture, and the prevalence of drug and sex education were internalized by these young people to form their own identity.

so rather than an instruction to others, Minor Threat's straightedge was a statement about themself.
