@SheepleProd I respect yours too. Of course when facts come in to play, opinions are just that. Sanchez has beaten Brady a few times already, including in the playoffs in NE, should he be in the HOF because of that?
Look, he isn't even close to being a HOF QB. He had 1 3/4 great years with a GREAT offense around him. He melted down so bad during the 86 year that they decided to START the back up Pat Ryan in BOTH playoff games. I wonder why they would do that when they already had a HOF caliber QB? hmmm? When Ryan was hurt in the Browns game O'Brien couldn't even complete a pass or move the Jets offense at all. I loved O'Brien for that 10 game streak in 86 but he simply was not a HOF QB.
@SheepleProd I loved (and hated) Kenny O, the offense they had with Shuler, Toon, Walker, McNeil & Hector was pretty potent and through the first 11 games of 86 O'Brien was unstoppable. The line wasn't great but I dont remember it being horrible either. He was sacked so many times because he held the ball too long - he just wouldn't throw it away so he was tough but maybe not so smart to take all of those hits (and lost yardage). Yes, he threw a great deep ball, that is true.
Imagine if the Jets had the O'Brien/Walker combo today. I was a teenager watching these guys, they were awesome. As someone else posted, O'Brien had one of the greatest arms ever. Pity about that shitty OL!
@brainofpea Yeah they would be amazing to watch. I was at that game in The Meadowlands,it was unreal. I'm just laughing at a comment here, the one that says, imagine Sanchez making them passes!!! Not in a million years could he.
@efan2011 I grew up during those years but lets be real, he is not a HOFer, not even close. 85 and 86 were great years (although the way 86 ended was sad).
the reason i'm a Jets fan since '86 from England and still got my madison square garden purchased Jets no. 7 O'Brien shirt to this day ..worn with Gang Green pride! Go Jets!!!
@AmazingQB I object to that guy calling George Thorogood "shitty", but I agree with getting rid of it. I don't see how it's needed, even if the on-air audio isn't that great. You can't really hear the announcers' calls from the field.
I'm so glad this has been posted. It's the reason i became a Jets fan. I hadn't got a team at this point and a friend was a Fins fan. He said 'you gotta chose a team'.I just loved the way the Jets tied the game in the last few seconds. Then won in o/t. So there you go! And i'm still a fan after 25yrs
The biggest prob for Ken was that he was never protected, I believ he was sacked mr than any QB in the 80s. He had great weapons Walker, Toon, Sohn, Shuler, McNiel, Hector. The Jets had no O line and NO back 7. If they blocked for Kenny and had some guys who could cover O'Brien would be talked about with the greats. It is a real shame.
One of the best regular season games ever, such drama, 2 O'Brien to Walker pass/catches to tie it/win it. 86 Jets were the best team of that lot of Jets teams, started 10-1, then gagged it up to 10-6, only to get to the divisional rd of the playoffs and cough up a 10 point lead late in Cleveland...OH THE PAIN!
@lilzander84 Much like the Colts D, it sucks overall. 1984-85 were the only years O'Briens Jets ranked in top 10 for D. In 1986 O'Brien's Jets went 10-1 but then injuries to key players killed them. 1987 was a strike. 1988 Walker and company were getting old and the team just fell apart. Coslet wanted to start over.
@sergiotico13 O'Brien made a lot of highlight reel plays, but he held the ball too long, had very little mobility and hung his receivers out to dry a lot. He was tough as nails as he got hit and sacked a lot- see David Carr- because he just wouldn't throw the ball away. The defense wasn't all around good except in '85, and though they got pressure on the QB their secondary was the weak link. They always had injuries to key guys in the front seven, especially after moving to turf of Meadowlands
@sergiotico13 and really you could say the same about the running game because McNeil struggled to stay healthy. Take a look at the front seven that was playing down the stretch in '86 when they lost 5 straight after starting 10-1- that prick Paul McGuire actually predicted it too as he hated the Jets. Everyone was out, and they fell to pieces.
@usflfootball The knock on the Jets was the Defense was just awful most of the time. O'Brien in this game shows he can play under pressure and in must score situations. Only in 1985 did O'Brien's Jets have a good D. The saying goes, Defense wins championships.
@golding123456 Well you could argue the team hasn't been the most succesful. but they have had some talented players, like Ken O'Brien, Joe Namath, and others. Not to mention, the team did win a Superbowl is helped put the AFC on the map! We all owe the Jets respect for doing that.
one of the most underrated and under appreciated passers of all time. Not very mobile but if he had a better offensive line, lets just say that Jets history would have been much brighter. I'll put it to you this way, no disrespect to Sanchez but if Kenny O was todays Jets QB we would have been in and won the last two Super Bowls
@REDSLANT was he that good? i mean, im not critizising or anything but what exactly went wrong? besides the underachieving offensive line the jets had back then, all the blame cant go to the o line, maybe he was a great passer but a poor strategist? wasnt he smart enought maybe?
@TheBerginton Ken O'Brien was a very smart QB. He when he had great players he produced some great offensive performances. This game is an NFL record still as his perfect NFL rating in a 400 yard game. D is the key to winning championships and that is where the Jets failed, not O'Brien. Not to mention the teams in the AFC East during that time all went to the superbowl. The division was tough. Bills, Dolphins, and even the Pats went to the Superbowl.
one of the most underrated and under appreciated passers of all time. Not very mobile but if he had a better offensive line, lets just say that Jets history would have been much brighter
@slydawg221 First qb to throw for 4000 yards. He was on a team that won a SB. Obviously a great QB for his time. Im not sure I like his 5% interception rate. Maybe somebody can make a video of him?
@billsgwn As a passer, I think he was. When he had a somewhat good team he put up some great numbers and perhaps more important you can see from this video just how talented he was. We all know it's a team sport. He had the skills, and when he was surrounded by offensive talent who produced. His perfect rating in a 400 yard game has never been duplicated. And this game is the greatest passing game of all time. =)
@HeartInThe60s O''Brien, while not as good as Marino, got screwed by the fact that he played for a team with a really sub-standard offensive line and average defense for his entire career
@SheepleProd There are only 23 Modern Era QB's in the HOF. Tell me which one that O'Brien is even close to in ability?
