I agree with you about the Apple store.... I went in back in December to the one in the Lehigh Valley Mall and was looking at Apple TV. And the salesperson did not try to sell me the more expensive one. She could tell I was interested in the product and gave me a huge overview of the product, but still did not try to convince me I needed the 160gb model the 40gb model which was about a $100 less.
I do a little pro gaming on the weekends to keep up with uptake on my several mansions on the lakeside and to afford the cocaine I do recreationally at several parties on the weekends without getting addicted and at each party fuck like 4-5 of the girls there.

speaking as a person who has used windows 7 I have to say it is better than vista and better than xp. Its lighter then vista and has a speed boost over previous versions of windows. However, I've had it crash twice (as its a beta ill let it slide) but it fails hard still when compared to OS X.
I never liked Steve Jobs, I spoke to him a few times on the phone back in the day. I liked the Wos. He was cool.
I didn't go with Apple back then, because even though the integrated approach was better in principal, it was a long time before they really got it together.

To get OSX legally, you have to buy a more expensive computer. The cheapest Macbook is $999.
I can install Ubuntu on an old laptop for free. Why would I buy a NEW COMPUTER just so I can run Firefox. Linux can run Firefox on just about any piece of hardware, so there is no need to switch to a Mac unless you have to have a Mac piece of software.

Do you think I don't know that? You also have to look at the Total Cost of Ownership. For PC's you need anti virus, anti spyware, new pats if you can't get vista to work right. When I insert an OS X install disc into my MacBook I am GUARANTEED that it will install.

I work in the computers dept at Best Buy, and our team is very strong in either Windows PC and Apple. I always ask my customers if they have considered Apple if it matches their needs, Ive sold over 40 so far in the 3 months ive been here.
Don't get your hopes up. By looking at AD's developing cycles I wouldn't count on them supporting the mac in a long time. They don't even have a 64bit version of Maya for the mac.
Their mac apps are there because the original developer made a mac port (like Maya or MB), but almost all apps are windows only (save for their compositing systems, which are linux only)
Apple being innovative, more like "invested" in other small companies that were Innovative. They reuse ideas just as much as other companies use other ideas. Apple certainly isn't as innovative as IBM, not by a long shot.

If Microsoft would basically Copy Apple's Concept of Building the OS for the computer and VS then they could really make Windows a much better OS and get some much better competition going. uh, ever hear of bootcamp for maya? And houdini, etc all work as fine if not better on the mac. And with bootcamp buying a pc is a waste. I run Houdin everyday, even have about 10 tutorials on my web site. every app has a mac vesion and the ones that dont or are not as good can be run on bootcamp better than most all pcs. Autodesk jsut sucks, period. Use cinema 4d on the mac or houdini.
Cinema 4D and Houdini are not like Maya man, Houdini may be similar and they all share similar tools, but when it comes to high end 3D Maya is on top. Its true when it comes to OS X Maya is a pile of ass with tons of glitchs, but its the same on Windows as well, crash city for me and im using the bloody student version!
i disagree. Houdini is way more powerful than maya. Houdini is procrdural based. Itss not the same. Houdini is actually higher end than maya because it costs MORE. Houdini has better particles by a long shot and dynamics in houdini is best of the best and the fluids is topped by no other. The only thing maya is popular for is the actual modeling. but as far as fluid, particles, dynamics, eyc houdini cant be beat. Thats why houdini was used in spiderman 3 to do the sandman coming together.
The mac version sucks. It's slow and unstable. I manage to make it crash all the time.
The windows version is stable (most of the time) but it's slow (although it's faster than the mac version). I use the 64bit version btw.
The linux version is like using a realtime app. It actually takes you longer to click the mouse than get the result you want. Everything from modeling, animation, up to rendering is faster than the other two. Simply amazing.
And you *should* know Maya, Cinema, and Houdini are different. They are used to do the same, but they work differently and knowing how to do something in Maya doesn't mean you'll just be able to do the same with Cinema or Houdini.
And running Maya on an imac via bootcamp is like running maya on a windows laptop. It runs and gets the job done but it doesn't shine.
microsoft didn't buy those 150million usd in stocks to save their mac share of software. I recall gates even said they were going to release a new version of OFFICE. Considering the mac marketshare, and the fact they only seemed to have one software for the mac, I would hardly call that incentive enough to save apple.

i don't think i would buy from a apple store but i would go to it to check products for myself - though i bought my mac from a place called Empire Direct, the iMac in that store just stood out like it was a god among the PC's.. which it pretty much was, i was drawn right to that. and DRM.. i hate it alot of PC gamers hate DRM because it limits the amount of times you can install the game, im getting vista in a few weeks to see if its got any better(gettting from a friend) but i dout it

On apple stores, in the uk apple have their own stores but also share stores with pc suppliers. I can walk into pc world and they have a section for apple computers.

Like they can't agree on what there gonna add to Windows 7, how there gonna add it, what's this gonna be, where's it gonna be, what's it gonna do? All that stuff. Buy 3 of the most expensive and most powerful Mac Pro's, then run Linux on one, Windows on one, and OSX on the other. 1 30" Cinema Display for each platform and there is nothing you can't do.

I only own a 20" iMac, but it runs Modo and Houdini better than my mates high spec custom PC, that is why a mac (pro) would be the best computer to run windows on. If you have the money, as they are, not overpriced, but very very expensive. Not many other PC manufacturers out there give the option of 2x 2.93ghz quad core nehalems. And once the Quadro FX4800 is released... Say no more.

Apple does NOT have 17% market share. Where the hell do people get these ever inflating numbers? Their marketshare is hovering around 9% or so globally.
Depends what market your looking at. For example if we concentrate on the consumer market and look at who is selling what on a day to day basis, you will find that Apple has closer to 30% marketshare, third behind HP and Dell.

I agree with you about the Apple store.... I went in back in December to the one in the Lehigh Valley Mall and was looking at Apple TV. And the salesperson did not try to sell me the more expensive one. She could tell I was interested in the product and gave me a huge overview of the product, but still did not try to convince me I needed the 160gb model the 40gb model which was about a $100 less.

Err, Microsoft back in 70s, created DOS, In the 80s, Microsoft was working with IBM, not Apple, on an os called OS/2, not Mac OS. After Microsoft saw that they could make it with just their version of OS/2 on top of their DOS platform, they made Windows.
You need to stop geting IBM's OS/2 confused with Apple's MacOS.

speaking as a person who has used windows 7 I have to say it is better than vista and better than xp. Its lighter then vista and has a speed boost over previous versions of windows. However, I've had it crash twice (as its a beta ill let it slide) but it fails hard still when compared to OS X.

I never liked Steve Jobs, I spoke to him a few times on the phone back in the day. I liked the Wos. He was cool.
I didn't go with Apple back then, because even though the integrated approach was better in principal, it was a long time before they really got it together.
Sony is notorious in the manufacturing industry, their contractors hate them.
Of all the computer companies, I think I liked Osborn most of all. Adam Osborn was a genius. But also a nice person.

To get OSX legally, you have to buy a more expensive computer. The cheapest Macbook is $999.
I can install Ubuntu on an old laptop for free. Why would I buy a NEW COMPUTER just so I can run Firefox. Linux can run Firefox on just about any piece of hardware, so there is no need to switch to a Mac unless you have to have a Mac piece of software.
For the average consumer, OSX is a waste of money when PC becomes an web-app machine.

As for your Best Buy, idk what kinda computers team they got, but sounds like they are not so great when it comes to introducing Apple's to costumers.
I work in the computers dept at Best Buy, and our team is very strong in either Windows PC and Apple. I always ask my customers if they have considered Apple if it matches their needs, Ive sold over 40 so far in the 3 months ive been here.

Don't get your hopes up. By looking at AD's developing cycles I wouldn't count on them supporting the mac in a long time. They don't even have a 64bit version of Maya for the mac.
Their mac apps are there because the original developer made a mac port (like Maya or MB), but almost all apps are windows only (save for their compositing systems, which are linux only)

It would be cool if they could come up with a Whole new Operating System for Micrsoft made computers but still have Windows for OEM's and Custom Builders. uh, ever hear of bootcamp for maya? And houdini, etc all work as fine if not better on the mac. And with bootcamp buying a pc is a waste. I run Houdin everyday, even have about 10 tutorials on my web site. every app has a mac vesion and the ones that dont or are not as good can be run on bootcamp better than most all pcs. Autodesk jsut sucks, period. Use cinema 4d on the mac or houdini.

i disagree. Houdini is way more powerful than maya. Houdini is procrdural based. Itss not the same. Houdini is actually higher end than maya because it costs MORE. Houdini has better particles by a long shot and dynamics in houdini is best of the best and the fluids is topped by no other. The only thing maya is popular for is the actual modeling. but as far as fluid, particles, dynamics, eyc houdini cant be beat. Thats why houdini was used in spiderman 3 to do the sandman coming together.

Houdini isn't better than anything else because it's node-based. BTW Maya IS node based and DAG-based. Do you even know what that means?
You said it, Houdini is better FOR DYNAMICS. I don't know how Mantra compares to MR, not only in output but also on the fact that MR is scriptable.
Maya's strong point has always been character animation. Since you like movies so much you know what they used to bring Ironman to life? :-/

I've used Maya on al three platforms.
The mac version sucks. It's slow and unstable. I manage to make it crash all the time.
The windows version is stable (most of the time) but it's slow (although it's faster than the mac version). I use the 64bit version btw.
The linux version is like using a realtime app. It actually takes you longer to click the mouse than get the result you want. Everything from modeling, animation, up to rendering is faster than the other two. Simply amazing.

And you *should* know Maya, Cinema, and Houdini are different. They are used to do the same, but they work differently and knowing how to do something in Maya doesn't mean you'll just be able to do the same with Cinema or Houdini.
And running Maya on an imac via bootcamp is like running maya on a windows laptop. It runs and gets the job done but it doesn't shine.

microsoft didn't buy those 150million usd in stocks to save their mac share of software. I recall gates even said they were going to release a new version of OFFICE. Considering the mac marketshare, and the fact they only seemed to have one software for the mac, I would hardly call that incentive enough to save apple.

i don't think i would buy from a apple store but i would go to it to check products for myself - though i bought my mac from a place called Empire Direct, the iMac in that store just stood out like it was a god among the PC's.. which it pretty much was, i was drawn right to that. and DRM.. i hate it alot of PC gamers hate DRM because it limits the amount of times you can install the game, im getting vista in a few weeks to see if its got any better(gettting from a friend) but i dout it

Very inspiring. Yeah, I've heard Microsoft always having internal battles. Like they can't agree on what there gonna add to Windows 7, how there gonna add it, what's this gonna be, where's it gonna be, what's it gonna do? All that stuff. Microsoft is falling apart because they have to many departments of business that need to talk to each other, from marketing to the makers of the software, they end up fighting and losing at Microsoft.

for there being competition in Microsoft that maybe true but back in the 80's weren't the people working on the apple computer pitted against he macintosh people and wasn't that making the compony almost implode in on it's self. If my facts were right wasn't that what got steve fired back in the 80's.

M$ first started going awry when they tried to use their monopoly to force Explorer down people's throats and destroy Netscape. Thank God it was Google that kicked M$ ass when it came to the Internet, while M$ was busy trying to kill Linux and waste time acquiring bullshit companies. M$'s response (of course) was to try to sue Google out of existence. Didn't work. Google needs to make it's *Nix-based OS. They will bury M$.

Apple computers are great machines for developers, you can develop on all 3 platforms with a Mac, heck, all 5 (Windows Mobile and iPhone OS are the last 2).
I have to say though I find running Linux on my iMac just feels strange, lol.

k we know the apple stores are great and best buy. please god dont get me started with those people GRRRRR. back to apple like emeek said you get a good feeling going thier. but 2 times and 2 different stores, i went to and i was ignored by an apple rep. it felt kinda cold. first time i was dress in proper business clothes and secound what i useally wear nothing strange. i got ignored. now isnt that odd. also of of the reps i have spoken 2 dont know jack. ask why should i get a mac.

Buy 3 of the most expensive and most powerful Mac Pro's, then run Linux on one, Windows on one, and OSX on the other. 1 30" Cinema Display for each platform and there is nothing you can't do.

But who would need that. Most people would be fine with OSX. (unless you are a gamer and require DirectX)
I only own a 20" iMac, but it runs Modo and Houdini better than my mates high spec custom PC, that is why a mac (pro) would be the best computer to run windows on. If you have the money, as they are, not overpriced, but very very expensive. Not many other PC manufacturers out there give the option of 2x 2.93ghz quad core nehalems. And once the Quadro FX4800 is released... Say no more.

considering that a lot of people still use Windows 2K, there's a big chance Windows XP will be around for some time.
Microsoft will be supporting Windows XP till the 2014, so...
although the world ends on 2012 so who really cares of microsoft supports XP till the year 3000 anyway XD

support? lol, that dont mean 3rd party will. you think a lot of apps in 9 and 10 will be xp compatible? you cant buy teh box xp anymore either. people using win2k are either a server or something in production that it only does one thing. they may support it but support is not "still manufacturing"

I said microsoft will support XP till 2014. Do you even know what that means? That means releasing patches and fixes. I never said anything about third party applications.
And those still using Win2K are the ones that never upgraded their machines, and most likely never will.

Apple does NOT have 17% market share. Where the hell do people get these ever inflating numbers? Their marketshare is hovering around 9% or so globally.

Depends what market your looking at. For example if we concentrate on the consumer market and look at who is selling what on a day to day basis, you will find that Apple has closer to 30% marketshare, third behind HP and Dell.
