  • Bravo a Johnny et Jackie ....super de beau petit reel....je trouve qu'il se situe entre la grande gigue simple et le brandy....j'aimerais le réentendre un jour, sur album cd.....a l accordéon hohner......

  • Jayz, @1:10 was that Michael Schumacher driving the tractor ???

  • @thofman09 :)

  • That's a button accordion.

  • wow thats jackie daly?? wheres the beard? how old is this?

  • He's playing a Charlie byrne bodhran. One of the greats

  • @Dectheboner Johnny McDonagh could play a tabletop and make it sound great.

  • @UISTMAN59 Ya but the Charlie byrne bodhrans are good. I is getting me one this week. :)

  • hey Johnny is so amazing

  • I think Jackie Daly´s box is a melodeon,or so called´´button accordeon´´.

  • Thats a sweet 'stache!

  • Well, I see 3 brits didn't think much of this....

Aw, I'm just kidding, my english friends, LOL.

    Great vid. Love Irish music!

  • I love Irish people and there culture. Thank you.

  • @RFPercussion Their music is great :-)

  • cheers

  • could someone plz tell me the name of tht tune..cheers

  • ZiziAllaire answered you directly a week ago - I didn't answer at that time since AnVeidhleadoir had already given the name of the tune a year ago !

  • @kevinloonam Mulqueens reel

  • Selon certaines définitions, un mélodéon correspond à un accordéon diatonique à une seule rangée (only one raw) comme on les trouve en Louisiane et au Québec.

  • Merci glubroz "According to certain definitions, a melodeon corresponds to a diatonic accordion with only one line (only one row) as one finds them in Louisiana and in Quebec." :-)

  • ok iv tried to read the other comments here with people trying to explain the differences between a button accordian and a melodeon but with none of them actually stating clearly what this instrument in your video is!!! well i'll tell you - it's a BUTTON ACCORDIAN! :)

  • BUTTON ACCORDION :-)

  • haha ya i just noticed my mistake!:D oh well!

  • Ach well , we all make mistakes. Thanks for the notes :-)

  • can some1 tell me the name of that tune?

  • Usually k nown as Mulqueen's or Mulqueeny's or Jim Mulqueeny's reel.

  • In Ireland melodeon is usually used for single row diatonic instuments and accordian for 2 row, 3 row or more or piano keyed chromatic instruments, but confusingly in Irish Gaelic they're all referred to as a BOSCA CEOL literally a music box,

  • Hello there,

    thanks for sharing.

I'm going to try answering the question in your desciption of this video.

I'm interested in this vocabulary matter and vocabulary is the reason why I found this video actually. In English there seems to be 2 words for what you call a "box" :o).

The word "accordion" and the word "melodeon".

I've seen in another commentary for this video that the use would vary according to Irish or English (that I don't know)...(to be continued)

  • ...I've been told that in English, a "melodeon" would correspond to diatonic system and an "accordion" would correspond to chromatic system but I'm not sure and it might be different according to the countries (Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England, USA). If anyone has any clues about that, please share. But there's one thing I'm 99% sure of, it's that the "box" Jackie Daly is playing in this video is made by a french "box" maker whose name is Bertrand Gaillard (it's written on it actually)...

  • ...And in French it's called an "accordéon diatonique", which would correspond to "diatonic accordion" in English or simply "melodeon" if the explanation I've been given is correct. More precisely it's what's called a "2 rangs 12 basses" which is "2 rows (12 basses ?)" in English.

    In a while.

  • thanks for posting this

  • FAZOWNIKI XD

  • ive played drums most of my life. i picked up a bodhran lastnight for about 20 mins and then tonight for about 3 hours. now beer and all the irish tunes i started to get better and better. now i can actually play it decent. im buying one now tommorw. we live in Newfounland and my family roots are from irland so its inportant to me that i play this! great sound and fun to play. minus the blisters i have.... sorry im loaded now but you all know what i mean!

  • @deanpoopoo If the thought entered your head to play this then its your duty to follow through, happy bodhraning

  • I am going to have to get a Bodhran pretty soon I like the sound of them I also like they tune they were playing to.

  • Another gem from Uistmann, Maith thu, yeh boy yeh.

  • Thanks Oliver :-)

  • Lovely. I enjoyed that. Jackie holds fort on the 1st week in July in Miltown Malbay, County Clare every year. Great box player.

  • Belated thanks for notes Bannerman.

  • the tune is Mulqueeneys. Its played in Clare, especially around kilfenora, but it comes from Kerry where it is called Free and easy. The town featured in the clip is Listowel county Kerry, which hosted many All Ireland Fleadhanna ceoil in the 80's, when, i suspect this may have been filmed.

  • Many thanks, AnVeidhleadoir.

  • Thanks for the info

  • Does anybody know the name of that great little piece he is playing

  • I've often wondered that myself. Any info would be much appreciated.

  • The name of dat reel is 'free and easy' Frankie Gavin recorded it on his album 'feirce traditional'

  • Many thanks gibsonpaddy.

  • Part of the great band De Dannan. Their recordings were some of our courting music in the early 80's even though we're Yanks.

My favorite album was "Selected Jigs & Reels" but to my dismay I heard the master tapes were lost or destroyed so there's no digital version. I hope I'm wrong!

  • very nice music

  • the beat the bodhran player is playing in the beginning of the tune reminds me very much of the Dominican Merengue Tipico music- The Tambora -( double sided barrel drum) plays a similar beat in the merengues that are played in "segunda" style

  • In Ireland it's an accordion . The one-row is a melodeon. In England , the one-row and two-rows are melodeons

  • Great stuff! Loved the hangover part; hope I will never experience something like that with my bodhran :) By the way, does anyone know the title of the tune?

  • Thanks sope92.

  • It was short, but it was SWEET!!!!!!!

  • Aye, you're right - too short.

  • well done johnny.. love the rim shots!

  • Thanks for the note reltub303.

  • 2 masters at work, thanks for posting....
