The 18 would look great but given the economic standing of the Philippines, I'd go for the 16.... Grippen is good... But the maintainance will kill us... So the 16 is the best choice...

@caylon31 i seriously doubt a 22 would lose to a 16... the 18 stomps on em in close combat as is. 16's dont have the turn radius to compete with 18's let alone a 22. we had a mock fight against 22's from langley airforce base... they killed us.. as far as 16's vs. 18's look up top gun in fallon nevada. average kill ratio for vfa-34 against 16's and f-5's was 16kills to 1 death. you should read more.
@caylon31 and so you know.. lockheed didn't design the f-16. general dynamics made it in the 1970's. the prototype hornet was the f-17 made at the same time.
Let's take the JAS 39 GRIPPEN but it should be able to land on hard packed gravel air strips so that we can have a non-fixed air base location. we can hide them in any barrio from the pacific east to the kalayaan islands. from the mountains of bukidnon to the aparri islands.
i don't mind what PAF picks as long as the selection makes good use of the money, helps fulfill PAF mission goals and all that stuff. Another alternative would be to make a unique aircraft design! That would take money but it would create jobs and thus stimulate the economy right?? What if the country invests in military..creates jobs to manufacture military equipment and stuff...sooo it MIGHT work....maybe not...otherwise im a fool for thinking so...best wishes to the modernization program!
The Gripen? Well personally, my bias against the Gripen is its design. I don't like the way it looks in the sides. Gripens have the ability to take off and land on public roads. Cool feature. Avionics and design-wise it has pretty good features on take off and landing....soooo
Take the Hornets. They are slowly aging but not at a very fast pace. Canada is replacing them in a few years as well. But they have remained very useful and very reliable due to being multi role fighters. The Philippines can use them as scouts or fighter planes to defend the airspace for a little while until enough money is there to buy more expensive fighters. The Hornets are inexpensive
Eh if you take it into perspective...study all three aircrafts. F-16's are made for fighting despite being multi-role plus they are expensive. The Philippines is not a threat to any country and there is no reason for it to be invaded by anyone...as far as we know. F-16 - bad choice.

The Thai air force, after having been operating a fleet of 60+ of the F-16's for more than a decade, has just selected the JAS-39 as its replacement fighters for its aging F-5 fleets. This happen even though they have 10+ years of familiarity using the F-16s !!
Clearly, when taking all the factors like available budget, maintenance cost, performance, avionics, threats, etc. into account, the new JAS-39C/D has won over F-16s for them.

Both are highly maneuverable with good thrust to weight ratio in the most modern versions of each. They are also slightly harder to see and hit compared to the larger FA-18. The Gripen may take a little more skill to fly at its limits though. Since they would be closely matched pilot skill would likely be the deciding factor. Not a likely scenario anyways.
Multirole (gripen) makes more sense for smaller countries imo, if you can't defend your airspace you're screwed anyway. The smaller bill doesn't hurt either.
The Gripen is an excellent choice for small countries. It was designed to be able to be effective even if the other side has air superiority.
The Gripen was designed during the Cold War and the main objective was that it be effective even if all of Sweden's defences were overrun by a Soviet attack. So it was designed to be able to land on regular highways and be refueled and prepared by a 5-person crew in only 10 minutes.

The F-16 is the best choice. It is combat proven, more cost-effective than the F-15 of comparable versions and there are also slightly used aircraft currently in storage. The Gripen is suitable for smaller countries.
The Gripen is superior when comparing older models of each aircraft. When the latest export models of each are considered the Gripen pulls even further ahead. Lowest total cost of ownership, highest combat availability, fastest rearm and launch turnaround time, largest combat radius, easiest maintenance, and best overall stealth of those on this list. The dramatic improvement in fuel storage in the Gripen NG would be of particular use to the Philippines considering their geography.

@trufa12 It depends... There has been an offer from the USA for about 14 OLD F-16s(about 20-25 years old) for a pretty solid sum of money. From SAAB there has been an offer for 14 NEW Gripens at the exact same price... You can see for yourself. The Bulgarian government will make its final decision in 2012 and I hope they will choose Gripen.

for me f-18 is more flexible than the two aircrafts. buying f-16 is a waste of money. f-18 can land on carriers which the f-16 and jas cannot do.
and f-18 can carry more weapons. but in philippine setting my aircraft choices are: A-10 warthog, tornado, and the f-15.

@caylon31 i seriously doubt a 22 would lose to a 16... the 18 stomps on em in close combat as is. 16's dont have the turn radius to compete with 18's let alone a 22. we had a mock fight against 22's from langley airforce base... they killed us.. as far as 16's vs. 18's look up top gun in fallon nevada. average kill ratio for vfa-34 against 16's and f-5's was 16kills to 1 death. you should read more.

Let's take the JAS 39 GRIPPEN but it should be able to land on hard packed gravel air strips so that we can have a non-fixed air base location. we can hide them in any barrio from the pacific east to the kalayaan islands. from the mountains of bukidnon to the aparri islands.

i don't mind what PAF picks as long as the selection makes good use of the money, helps fulfill PAF mission goals and all that stuff. Another alternative would be to make a unique aircraft design! That would take money but it would create jobs and thus stimulate the economy right?? What if the country invests in military..creates jobs to manufacture military equipment and stuff...sooo it MIGHT work....maybe not...otherwise im a fool for thinking so...best wishes to the modernization program!

The Gripen? Well personally, my bias against the Gripen is its design. I don't like the way it looks in the sides. Gripens have the ability to take off and land on public roads. Cool feature. Avionics and design-wise it has pretty good features on take off and landing....soooo

Take the Hornets. They are slowly aging but not at a very fast pace. Canada is replacing them in a few years as well. But they have remained very useful and very reliable due to being multi role fighters. The Philippines can use them as scouts or fighter planes to defend the airspace for a little while until enough money is there to buy more expensive fighters. The Hornets are inexpensive

Eh if you take it into perspective...study all three aircrafts. F-16's are made for fighting despite being multi-role plus they are expensive. The Philippines is not a threat to any country and there is no reason for it to be invaded by anyone...as far as we know. F-16 - bad choice.

The only thing with american fighters is the constant upgrades they receive, a 1980 F18 has nothing on a 1990 FA-18, etc etc, a super hornet is a completely upgraded platform unlike a 1990's type FA 18

The Thai air force, after having been operating a fleet of 60+ of the F-16's for more than a decade, has just selected the JAS-39 as its replacement fighters for its aging F-5 fleets. This happen even though they have 10+ years of familiarity using the F-16s !!
Clearly, when taking all the factors like available budget, maintenance cost, performance, avionics, threats, etc. into account, the new JAS-39C/D has won over F-16s for them.
Hope to see the JAS flying PAF's flag soon too :)

Both are highly maneuverable with good thrust to weight ratio in the most modern versions of each. They are also slightly harder to see and hit compared to the larger FA-18. The Gripen may take a little more skill to fly at its limits though. Since they would be closely matched pilot skill would likely be the deciding factor. Not a likely scenario anyways.

Multirole (gripen) makes more sense for smaller countries imo, if you can't defend your airspace you're screwed anyway. The smaller bill doesn't hurt either.

The Gripen is an excellent choice for small countries. It was designed to be able to be effective even if the other side has air superiority.
The Gripen was designed during the Cold War and the main objective was that it be effective even if all of Sweden's defences were overrun by a Soviet attack. So it was designed to be able to land on regular highways and be refueled and prepared by a 5-person crew in only 10 minutes.

The F-16 is the best choice. It is combat proven, more cost-effective than the F-15 of comparable versions and there are also slightly used aircraft currently in storage. The Gripen is suitable for smaller countries.

The Gripen is superior when comparing older models of each aircraft. When the latest export models of each are considered the Gripen pulls even further ahead. Lowest total cost of ownership, highest combat availability, fastest rearm and launch turnaround time, largest combat radius, easiest maintenance, and best overall stealth of those on this list. The dramatic improvement in fuel storage in the Gripen NG would be of particular use to the Philippines considering their geography.

@trufa12 It depends... There has been an offer from the USA for about 14 OLD F-16s(about 20-25 years old) for a pretty solid sum of money. From SAAB there has been an offer for 14 NEW Gripens at the exact same price... You can see for yourself. The Bulgarian government will make its final decision in 2012 and I hope they will choose Gripen.
