Frogdude check ya neck pal, hardcore in the dark sense was very short-lived, pretty much 12 months from early '93-94. jungle as it was known overlapped this, the latter half of '93 saw m-beat's rumble for example really push the jungle sound, by late '94 drum and bass was well established - the helicopter tune had dropped and i'm sure set speed by DJ Krust was about by then too, bread and butter DnB.

as for the scene or even the music dying in 2001, that is where you fall down the furthest.

This is hardcore mate. 91-93 was hardcore years, 94-95 jungle, 96 was the cross over point where jungle faded out and drum n bass begin. Then drum n bass died around 2001 in my opinion. Now we have a sad excuse of drum and bass!
