Rick I like you and think you are creative and very interesting. I have never had the nerve to do a youtube video. I have a blog and am always nervous about that but I rarely have anyone that sees it and have only had a couple of comments. If you would like to check it out google Grams Survival Kitchen. Would love someone I admire like you to give me constructive criticism. Thanks, Have a great new year!
Hi Rick. I love the song/music/melody in this video, especially at the end of the video. I have heard this melody in some of your other videos also but don't know what it is. Just curious, but what is it? It's nice. Thanks.
im going to build up a shelter with water and food , enought to life for a year. i am going to use it between 2012 and 2014. after that i think i am going to farm weath. and later start to farm crops.
make a few solar cookers, learn how to use them before you need to.- at least they are good to sterilize water.
you can make one basically free from an old satellite dish+white glue + shiny Mylar strips-((big pieces of Mylar create bubbles)) from the inside of used snack packages. dry at least 1 week- see lots of web sites for info.
if I can make one than anyone can. the first test burned a whole in a newspaper in 4 seconds.
make sure you ware really dark sunglasses EVERY time you use it..
Be careful with anything that has oil fats especially peanut butter. Anything with that nutty fat will go rancid pretty fast. You cannot push the shelf life past the 10-12 months.
Hi Rick thought you might be interested being a fellow uk prepper. I found a uk based website called myprotein that sells 1kg of dried for £12.99. A useful item for when you cant get hold of fresh eggs. Although im not sure how long you can store this stuff for.
Another excellent supplement with almost an infinite shelf life is products like Rejuvenate and other Green Drinks with hundreds of freeze dried fruits and veggies and quality protein mixed in. You can literally live on 4 or 5 scoops a day for a long time if it really came down to it. It's expensive, but it's very nutritious.
thats how you survive a disaster. when its more then one person trying to take care of many. less stress more help, and more defenses as well if it comes to it. We can all food that we can, rice, wheat, and all other grains that we can. we have a rain catch system that covers an estimated 20 acres and we get a lot of rain ( 45-60 inches a year) Everyone needs to pitch in and help or you will be fighting with your neighbors if it lasts for weeks of months.
I grew up on a lot of property in the states, I know own 50 acres, I have set up half of that as a local farm to help feed neighbors. As a byproduct of doing that we end up with a lot of food every year that we just cant eat so we dehydrate it and store it, we rotate it each year with new and eat the old, as it sits our neighborhood food stock can hole enough food and water for 100 people for 6-9 months depending on the year, we only have 20 people eating out of it. Become a neighborhood again..
@adamslurch71 WOW I wish I could do something like this or at the very least be one of your neighbors :). It sounds like you have a fantastic set up not just with the food but also with your community!
@mycomama The solution is incredibly simple. It's all about personal responsibility - if you want it, YOU have to make it happen. No excuses, end of. :o)
@rickvanman Well yes I do store food and have for a while now. I was talking about adamlurch71's comments and his set up with 50 acre's of land and the sharing of food and resources with his community. This is the dream that I have for my extended family that I hope to reach in the next 20 years. For now I store food, make meals as much from scratch as I can , and buy non electric kitchen items so I can ALWAYS use them. You should do a video on cooking without electricity :).
Excellent video. Just want to add for all your viewers this bit. In September of 2002, I was living in Nova Scotia, Canada. We were hit by a hurricane, with winds averaging 100 to 120 kilometers an hour (60 to 80 mph for you yanks).
Our beautiful tree lined streets became weapons of mass destruction as the gale force winds, driving these same trees through our power lines. 300,000 people without power, overnight. NO FOOD COULD BE BOUGHT OR HAD FOR ALMOST 4 DAYS.
@rickvanman Well thats easier said than done due to the fat that i would require a good hydroponic set up or an outdoor garden both of which i have but both are useless in 90 percent of emergencies.Due to the fact hydro takes a lot of power, about 20 ltrs of diesel a day to run a generator x 3 months for growing cycle that is 1800 litres of fuel. That is nearly two tones of diesel!!! Also outdoor crops are easily destroyed in any disaster situation ie fire, storms, floods, wars and the list goes on!
@CONSTRINGACY It's not rocket science. If you want to take responsibility for yourself in times of crisis, then a good story or excuse as to why you can't do something to prepare will only guarantee you beoming a victim.
If you are that dependent on supermarkets or wherever you get your food from, then I' afraid you're a victim unless you have a fall-back plan.
It's as simple as that.
If you were starving, you'd eat canned goods without thinking twice, this is, if you decide to store any.
The biggest message missed here is that you should store what you like to eat. There's no sense at all in stocking up in split pea soup if no one in your family eats split pea soup. Nice tip about rotation, but the nutritional tips really didn't matter. Hit the high point on the protein sources, and remember that sometimes people may not have access to cooking those packets of noodles.
@xj14y I emphasize twice in the video the golden rule of - eat what you store and store what you eat! It was the whole point of the video - not sure what you mean about the missed message?
I wonder here in Florida is a good place to live and store food? We can not have a basement as our soil is very sandy weak. Most houses in Florida are flat with three bedrooms, two bath, one living, one kitchen and dining. Many has no car garage. Where would be the place for food storage ?
Under the beds in storage drawers, the backs of well-organised kitchen cupboards, inside the bottom of a wardrobe, think of any area of the home that is seldom used, can you stack totes there? can you make a shelving area? (see video above). The corner of a less-used room. Every home has lots of nooks and crannys you can utilise.
If there is a lot of junk or clutter in your home, think about having a garage sale, eBay, and/or a trip to the local dump to free up some space.
some tins are coated inside and some aren't and wondering eating too much tin foods causes cancer? For storage I prefer to buy store brand or saver cheap tin foods but as you said we got to rotate, which means I have to eat continuously.
If you are worried, how about getting into gardening and growing your own? I have a tiny patio garden, but am still working on this option. I am building up a website called container gardening for food (see notes area for a link) where I am relaying my progress.
@rickvanman Unfortunately I live a flat without even a balcony and not even window edge. :) life is bad . huh!? In a second I thought you were saying ' I have a patio...come and plant here...' :)
Great video, rick! I'd rather have all the supplies and not need them than to need them and not have them. I've managed to get my husband on the "preparedness wagon" and he's supportive of my efforts. Thanks for posting!
lol...you know why this made me giggle? my fathers family were the type to store house and my sister always does...and more than a month or two. but we have bigger kitchens and pantries here.
don't tease me like that. besides...if we got a ranch it would still need to be near a city! but then...there are plenty of states we could do that in!! :)
check 'simpsons code' on youtube, this guy predicted that mid Oct- 9th November there would be a pandemic breaking out due to illuminati bioweapons..he predicts December will be wider spread...check it & suspend your disbelief..."sometimes the safest place to hide the truth is out in the open"...
i will repeat 4 new viewers= if nothing happens all u have is som extra food to giv to needy ppl BUTif somthin happens it may save your life an that of loved ones .........preparation = peace of mind in bad trimes
Remember honey bee which last a lifetime and rice store inside cracker tin cans plus use your roof for water catchment if no rivers or wells are in your area.
Nah... Spam's great.... what YOU'RE talking about is what we in the States call "Potted Meat Product"... "What's in it" you ask? Everything that hasn't already been used. ...and I mean EVERYTHING. ;-)
You can store alfalfa seeds and mung beans for sprouting. It only takes about 5 days to get some sprouts from the seeds. The seeds themselves have a 5 year shelf life if stored correctly. What this means is that you can have fresh produce from sprouts when it becomes impossible to purchase fresh produce. Store alfalfa and mung bean seeds.
It's just plain a good idea to have extra food on hand. Buy extra when It's on sale and you will save money in the long run. When you buy what you eat (great advice) nothing will go to waste.
Shelf life is just a guide line. I saw a report on a chap who ate a can of chicken from 1950s and he wasn't ill at all. He said it tasted fine. It was something to do with his wedding anniversary and a bet with his wife.

I'm the exception. I don't eat canned food at all.
Maybe canned sweetcorn. I only eat fresh food.
My plan is to throw away the cans rather than eat them. But they last 25+ years anyway.
PS Peanut butter goes rancid due to the high oil content.
