As a TKD practitioner, I can honestly say that I'm happy to have seen the MMA guy mess up the TKD dude like that. There's some seriously closed minded martial artists out there that need a wake up call just like this guy received.. At least it was in the ring, not in the streets.
@choyleefutkid1 The MMA guy could've knocked him out in one punch. The decision to go for the takedown was arbitrary. He could've finished him any way he wanted to.
This fight is such bullshit. Even if Mr. TKD was MMA, the weight difference, on top of being rushed, there is just no chance. Mr. Fatass took a v-e-r-y cheap tactic on him, something he wouldn't have done so easily had he fought a fair adversary.

@dlygrisse1 So what if the other guy is 40 or 50 lbs bigger, look at Royce gracie, he had to submit people that were much bigger than him the point is if you don't know how to fight on the ground, you don't have a chance at fighting.

@xprtshad0wkill Your response literally has nothing to do with what I wrote. I wrote that knees and front kicks are ineffective defenses for takedowns.
Rutten (Who has 2nd degree black belts in Taekwondo and karate, and was also a professional Muay Thai fighter) actually landed a knee when his opponent went in for the takedown. Not only did he fail to knock his opponent out, but he also lost the fight.
What I'm trying to say is that although the knee defense sounds good in theory, it has repeatedly failed when put to the test in real fights.
@ThePinkMan Ok whatever you say I'm not going to argue, Plus second degree means nothing a tae kwon do dude with just a black belt won the fight from a 2nd degree black belt in the turnament. All that matters is how much training you put in in whatever you practice. Do you watch anderson silva he will deffinetly say that knee kicks are important. @Ljenkins9000 That don't make no damn sense, we can all clearly see the size difference between the two. He puts on paper he's 200lbs, and they just act like they don't see the size difference??? Is that what your telling us!?
@bigblackracoon "He puts on paper he's 200lbs, and they just act like they don't see the size difference??? Is that what your telling us!?"
Yes. They usually let you fight at your discretion if you are under weight. If you're over it's a bit more serious and they usually won't let you fight. This is the example of why you don't want to come in under weight, and why you definitely don't want to do TKD and nothing else.
@bigblackracoon Ljenkins may or may not be right. But either way, this fight took place in 1998, before rules and weightclasses were actually regulated in MMA. The promoters could pretty much do whatever they wanted to.
My theory is that the Taekwondo kid kept begging the promoters for a fight, so they just threw him into the lion's den just to shut him up. Believe it or not, this had been known to happen before. Look up Mark Kerr vs. Greg Stott.
the guy outweighs him for starters. By at least 20 lbs. Lucky it wasnt ufc otherwise he would have gotn some smashes to the face before the ref got there and the dude would be in a wheelchair.
hey guys check out this video, they are strictly using Kung Fu, no BJJ, you can see that traditional martial arts ***does*** have ground fighting. watch?v=q9Ef9hgkZVQ (just add that to the youtube url) just because they don't emphasize the ground doesn't mean they don't have ground/anti-grappling.
I'm an advocate in MMA and jujitsu being a part of that but the MMA fighter is way bigger than the TKD fighter. There is an obvious size disadvantage which makes this a horrible representation. For a TKD guy to agree to fight a guy not only trained in ground fighting but also a lot bigger than him, its plain suicide. The MMA fighter didn't even win by technique but by sheer size and strength when he body slammed him.
1. This guy is a bad representative for JKD. Initiating with a jump kick to the head?? That's more like Bruce Lee the actor, not Bruce Lee, the martial artist.
2. The other guy must have at least 50 pounds on him. No wonder he gets owned on the ground.
This isn't an achievement of MMA style, but a result of superior physicality and cage specific training. Street fights dont happen in that kind of environment.
Except that something like 60-80% of real world fights end up going to the ground. Striking fights look pretty in movies, but a good fighter knows how to handle themselves in BOTH situations. I train in both TKD & BJJ for exactly that reason.
@vekaras in my experience real fights only go to the ground IF it is allowed to go to the ground. If you know how to keep distance, take down counters who can take you down? go for a low take down usually is countered with a straight knee kick to the face resulting in a ko. Coming in close for the grapple to throw is met with repeated cutting elbows to the face. take downs only work if the other doesn't know how to counter it. though i agree. Train for all situations is best.
@KensaiZen In my experience, real fights can end up on the ground whether you want them to or not (And even if you know what you're doing). Even in pure boxing or kickboxing matches, fighters still end up clinching inadvertently, and the same thing happens in the street. Knees suck for takedown defense because they leave off balance and you can rarely knock them out in one hit. All that stuff sounds great in theory until you're pinned to the ground and getting your teeth knocked out.
@ThePinkMan strangely enough in my experience I have been able to use the straight knee kick quite effectively against someone trying to come and grab my legs. what made it work even more effectively was the fact that i was moving directly into them coming forward making even a glancing hit stunning them completely. Once stunned it was just attack attack attack, don't stop striking till they stop moving. simple as really. though it depends what you have trained for.
@ThePinkMan if you train for grappling, most likely you will try to counter takedowns and locks with more grappling. Strikers also train for anti takedowns, though with sport trained arts they leave it out due to there being a ref to seperate them. Next time you see someone lunging for your legs or waist, just move in with knee up and see.
@KensaiZen The problem is that strikers won't understand the mechanics and nature of takedowns if they don't train them. It's a lot easier to counter takedowns when you actually know when they're being set up and what it feels like to have someone try to knock you off balance.
Anyway, knees have ALREADY BEEN PROVEN to be ineffective compared to sprawling. The knee was a legal counter in PrideFc and Vale Tudo, and still is legal to some extent in the UFC. It's just a hail mary move.
@KensaiZen Unless you're actually testing your techniques against qualified wrestlers during training, you still don't know what works for you and are just playing games.
@ThePinkMan heres some other points of reference. Hermes Franca vs Sean sherk. Knee's beat the take down. These people have trained to use both. At the end of the day it depends on experience. Have you trained to counter take down with knee's or you haven't and trained for a different method. distance also plays a very important part, and like I said if you keep your distance, you can see it coming a mile away. All depends on experience :)
If you have time to really "fight on the ground", you shouldnt be fighting at all. real fights dont have multiple rounds while rolling around on the floor mopping it with sweat.
@dcrt75 Shit happens, fights spill to the floor. In a perfect world you would have complete control over every violent encounter you're in, but that's not how it works. Grappling isn't some esoteric strategy that only happens if a BJJ practitioner is involved in a fight. It's a reality of combat, whether in the ring or on the street.
@angeldanny87 tkd suck ass ptttt ...what now ?are you going to cry?, i think you going to cry btw you misspelled respect ..ah nvm i don't want to get you angry.
@zacktillery No they asking for it , so i bring it.. they created a Monster muahahaha..i get attack by tkd douches every fucking day slightly criticizing them. so i grew tired of there shit. every style has explanation but tkd they teach you shut your mind like a cult..
@zacktillery I took tkd before i wasn't allow to talk about other arts...the Korean tkd teacher said "tkd best art and omg i hate krav maga " ..and kids lesson where kids "you musta behaving while mom drive car"
It's like why he don't teach kids important stuff.
@angeldanny87 Emm... maybe I quoted some dude named Ali G, maybe I don't like tkd and don't even practice it and maybe your comment made me laugh... that's all, stop being so pessimistic about everything :) get laid, I dunno, do something about it! Cheers!
@waaromleefik2 I didn' t say it' s the only possibility for being able to do it. I only mean it' s usefull and if you want to, you can also use your feet to turn on the sink! :D

Yes. They usually let you fight at your discretion if you are under weight. If you're over it's a bit more serious and they usually won't let you fight. This is the example of why you don't want to come in under weight, and why you definitely don't want to do TKD and nothing else.
Ljenkins9000 4 months ago

Some fighters are just a better fighters. It's not about the style but the fighters.. This vid. is not from Korea but Thailand itself...
tirtashintaro 4 months ago
I'm an advocate in MMA and jujitsu being a part of that but the MMA fighter is way bigger than the TKD fighter. There is an obvious size disadvantage which makes this a horrible representation. For a TKD guy to agree to fight a guy not only trained in ground fighting but also a lot bigger than him, its plain suicide. The MMA fighter didn't even win by technique but by sheer size and strength when he body slammed him.
lv2flynvy 5 months ago
Haromane 5 months ago
@Haromane Royce fought with a 300lb disadvantage, the gracies pretty much proved it was technique.

Wtf is this... This isn't even a fight... I'm srry mma but forcing ppl to the floor while holding them isn't fighting that's just homosexual...
migs52213 5 months ago
Except that something like 60-80% of real world fights end up going to the ground. Striking fights look pretty in movies, but a good fighter knows how to handle themselves in BOTH situations. I train in both TKD & BJJ for exactly that reason.
vekaras 5 months ago
@vekaras in my experience real fights only go to the ground IF it is allowed to go to the ground. If you know how to keep distance, take down counters who can take you down? go for a low take down usually is countered with a straight knee kick to the face resulting in a ko. Coming in close for the grapple to throw is met with repeated cutting elbows to the face. take downs only work if the other doesn't know how to counter it. though i agree. Train for all situations is best.
KensaiZen 5 months ago
@KensaiZen In my experience, real fights can end up on the ground whether you want them to or not (And even if you know what you're doing). Even in pure boxing or kickboxing matches, fighters still end up clinching inadvertently, and the same thing happens in the street. Knees suck for takedown defense because they leave off balance and you can rarely knock them out in one hit. All that stuff sounds great in theory until you're pinned to the ground and getting your teeth knocked out.
ThePinkMan 5 months ago
@ThePinkMan strangely enough in my experience I have been able to use the straight knee kick quite effectively against someone trying to come and grab my legs. what made it work even more effectively was the fact that i was moving directly into them coming forward making even a glancing hit stunning them completely. Once stunned it was just attack attack attack, don't stop striking till they stop moving. simple as really. though it depends what you have trained for.
KensaiZen 5 months ago
@ThePinkMan if you train for grappling, most likely you will try to counter takedowns and locks with more grappling. Strikers also train for anti takedowns, though with sport trained arts they leave it out due to there being a ref to seperate them. Next time you see someone lunging for your legs or waist, just move in with knee up and see.
KensaiZen 5 months ago
@KensaiZen The problem is that strikers won't understand the mechanics and nature of takedowns if they don't train them. It's a lot easier to counter takedowns when you actually know when they're being set up and what it feels like to have someone try to knock you off balance.
Anyway, knees have ALREADY BEEN PROVEN to be ineffective compared to sprawling. The knee was a legal counter in PrideFc and Vale Tudo, and still is legal to some extent in the UFC. It's just a hail mary move.
ThePinkMan 5 months ago
@ThePinkMan Thats ok. I'll stick to what I know and works for me :) Different people train for different things.
KensaiZen 5 months ago
@KensaiZen Unless you're actually testing your techniques against qualified wrestlers during training, you still don't know what works for you and are just playing games.
ThePinkMan 5 months ago
@ThePinkMan and how often am I going to find a trained and qualified wrestler out on the streets? ok thanks bye
KensaiZen 5 months ago
@ThePinkMan heres some other points of reference. Hermes Franca vs Sean sherk. Knee's beat the take down. These people have trained to use both. At the end of the day it depends on experience. Have you trained to counter take down with knee's or you haven't and trained for a different method. distance also plays a very important part, and like I said if you keep your distance, you can see it coming a mile away. All depends on experience :)

I'm sorry about that TKD guy :/
MrLoungeman1 5 months ago
If you have time to really "fight on the ground", you shouldnt be fighting at all. real fights dont have multiple rounds while rolling around on the floor mopping it with sweat.
dcrt75 5 months ago
@dcrt75 Shit happens, fights spill to the floor. In a perfect world you would have complete control over every violent encounter you're in, but that's not how it works. Grappling isn't some esoteric strategy that only happens if a BJJ practitioner is involved in a fight. It's a reality of combat, whether in the ring or on the street.
