What I wanna know is HOW do you change the default codec so that WMC records to something like an MPEG-TS file instead of that shitty 'dvr-ms" codec? I've scoured all over Google and can't find squat for info!
Thanks for trying to help but please, please please get to the point. This is worse than Deke McClelland. I 'm only halfway through this clip and already I want to die.
What i use is Cyberlink Power Producer which doesn't actually convert the file. Just create a dvd and import files. Then the .mpg files will be in the Cyberlink folder e.g. C:\Users\%username%\CyberLink. Remember you don't actually create a dvd, you just need to go through that step to import the files.
Just to let you know what I do. I take the dvr-ms file and change the extension to .mpg and then use Pazera Video Converters Suite to convert it to what every format I want (zune, psp, ipod, flash, or other mobile phone video)
Put the mpg into Windows Movie Maker, not sure about iMovie and publish them, they will become .wmv files in WMovie Maker, still not sure about iMovie tho
I don't have any problems taking a programme recorded with Media Center and burning it to a DVD. This option is built-in to my version of Media Center which shipped with VISTA x64. I do it quite regularly, although Media Center does take a while to trans-code into DVD format and burn it to an actual DVD.
I only wish that Media Center would allow export to other formats, such as xVid and DIVx.

Non that SH*T works. DVRToolbox doesn't work on Vista. And FFMPEG takes a long time and has pissy video and audio quality.

I'm using DVRToolbox on my laptop, which is running Windows Vista 64-bit.
