    Truly enjoyed your music Randy!!

from your heart to my soul

    your spirit soars

    mahalo nui loa

  • mahalo "faded patch".

  • I would give just about anything to be able to play that way. I guess I'm just a strummer for life. Great job! I've been admiring this video for some time now.

  • strum for peace! mahalo.

  • Awesome tone!

What do you think about the Marshall Acoustic Soloist amps?

Is it worth to buy one?

  • aloha LPFan3118,

well...i like this marshall. it is about 11 years old and marshall's first attempt at acoustic amplification, i think. i have demo'd many other models and cannot find one i like better than this combo. i have played many solo gigs with this unit using a mic, drum machine and guitar all plugged in to it. mahalo!

  • Really nice job man. good stuff...

  • mahalo nui!

  • very nice - i like the background strumming you're doing with your index finger

  • mahalo, tafkam1. that little brush strum keeps the rhythm/timing going. for some reason i never had to work on that. it came about naturally as i was teaching myself slack key.

  • Absolutely superb :)! What slack key tuning did you use for this piece?

  • mahalo just bessie! "taro patch" (open G) tuning.

  • really nice job. beautiful listening.

  • thank you very kindly!

  • Lovely :-)

  • Staying in Lahaina on Maui and Wailua on Kauai.

  • Thanks! I'm a Native Oregonian and am pretty stoked about the trip. I'm new to slack key. Any suggestions on where I could catch some good players while I'm there?

  • i'm currently out of touch with things going on over on maui and kaua'i. you'll most likely visit front street in lahaina (maui) and there's always top notch local entertainment there or upcountry in kula and makawao. on kaua'i, visit the hyatt regency in po'ipu or the marriott in lihue. perhaps someone else from either island that is reading this can add, subtract or be more specific. i highly recommend any CD's by keola beamer, ledward ka'apana, cyril pahinui and dennis kamakahi.

  • Very emotional melody. Many thanks! I am visiting Maui and Kauai for the first time in a few weeks. Hope to catch Ledward Kaapana at the Masters Concert Series on Maui. Do you live in Hawaii and do you perform somewhere I could hear you?

  • mahalo wldrns!

i live on big island (hawai'i) and often perform gigs in the kona resorts, usually in a trio. enjoy ledward and your visit to the islands. i used to live on kaua'i and maui and really miss kaua'i especially. it's the best in my opinion.

  • Really great guitar playing. Your song flows like the ocean on that perfect day.

    Michael Joe Kirkbride

  • mahalo nui, michael. yeah man...a perfect day on the ocean. how cool is that?

  • as an ovation 12 string player and sometime slack key player from hawaii all i can say is this is very good (maika'i wale no). keep it up and would love to hear more.

  • mahalo, 808robertr!

i will be taking lessons with cyril pahinui in a few weeks so i am hoping to develop my style a bit and also learn some traditional ki ho'alu.

  • Beautiful song Randy. Great nahenahe sound. I look forward to seeing more slack key material from you. Aloha.

  • mahalo, pocho!

  • Thank you Lanaki. Your response was only minutes after my posting. We must be on at the same time. Who are ssome of your favourite guitar players?

  • keola beamer, tommy emmanuel and marcel dadi are my guitar heroes.

  • Very nice, very sweet. "slack key" meaning not regular tuning I take it? Real nice playing, makes want to practise and practise and...... ;)

  • aloha tony,

mahalo! the tuning is an open G, also known as "taro patch" here in hawaii. D-G-D-G-B-D from low to high.

  • Great tune.. I've listened to it over and over again.. Nice looking older Ovation too, it recorded very well.. Share more please..

  • mahalo rickartj!

  • Most excellent,

The way an Adamas Guitar was meant to be played.....with heart and soul.

  • aloha elevatorMD! this guitar is actually an '83 ovation elite 1537. looks much like an adamas but with a wood top. i no longer own this guitar but i miss it and will probably acquire another like it some day soon. see ya' on the forum!

  • if this dont put you in a good mood nothin will. beautifuly done.

  • mahalo, grandcape!

  • sounds great!

i've been trying to get into slack key as of late. was playing the ukulele and had my shot w/ Jake's rendition of Gently weeps just like everyone else haha.

any suggestions on how to pick it up? I'm having issues with the technique of slack key vs. traditional acoustic stuff..

  • Nice....but I like hear the song only acoustic minus the effects....can?

  • the effects are minimal. with the loss of audio quality from youtube's upload compression you would not detect much difference in sound. come to hilo and i'll play it live for you!

  • That was golden! I hope you'll post some more in the future. Nice guitar, what kind of strings do you use?

  • mahalo! i use elixir polyweb light-mediums .12-.56.

  • I just recently found, and love, slack key guitar. Played well like Lanaki, is in my mind one of the most romantic and heart felt music ever played. Well done, well done!!!! Allow me to tip my hat to you sir!!!

  • No matter how much I listen, it gets better all the time, love ya ,son of mine.............

  • Malo lava and mahalo for this. So beautiful, just what this island boy needed to see and "feel" on this Sunday. Words are not enough....truley "da kine".

  • Absolutely beautiful! I've been playing acoustic for over 40 years and never heard of "slack key"... what exactly IS slack key? (Also, THANK you for posting the TE vids at the Opry! I have hundreds of Tommy vids on my page - bigdood - click on playlist at top. ALSO, I have included YOU as a favorite on my Acoustic Virtuosity site!) 5/5!

  • mahalo bigdood!

"slack key" or "ki ho'alu" in hawaiian is simply the hawaiian style of alternate tunings. in my video here, i am using an open G tuning, known as "taro patch".

  • so the whole instrument is tuned to an open G? is there a guitar equivalent? thanks for your answer in advance!

  • lemme explain that last comment... this can be played on ANY guitar, or do you have to have one that sounds as good as yours does? :-)

  • any guitar. tune it like this from low to high: DGDGBD so you tune down or "slack" only three strings drop the low E to D, the A to G and the high E to D

there are many websites devoted to slack key. look for keola beamer's site in particular.

  • cool... thanks for giving me the info to practice something brand new on the git-box! i appreciate your patience and willingness to share what you know! Peace...

  • There's also a Makanani by Helena Kalokuokamaile Salazar.

  • Nice.

  • Sweet As Lanaki!!

.....Don't know why you would want to buy my Adamas11 when you have a great guitar and a lovely melody already!;)

    Cheers,

    Dave.

  • Your video is Great !!! I'm the guy from ebay with the Adamas 1. I wish you lived closer to me so we could play together. Aloha !!!

  • How much cost an Ovation (a cheap one)? Thx, Im thinking of bying one :)

  • Aloha Lanaki!

This composition is great! Post more of your music!

  • I love slack key! Thanks for this, it's beautiful!

  • howzit,

you ever notice the face in the shades behind you? scary cuzz. The music is beautiful.

    aloha nui loa

actually, it's my guardian angel, always keepin' an eye on me.

  • wassup mark, Awesome. Kind of makes me not miss home so much. Aloha to you and thanks for sharing your music with all of us. A small question, Do you think it is possible to learn kihoalu through the net. I saw a beginners course Keola Beamer was offering.

    Mahalo, scott

  • aloha scott,

actually, mark is someone who posted a comment. i am lanaki. yes, you can certainly learn some slack key over the net. keola beamer is my slack key hero. go for his course!

  • beautiful! i'm gonna share this with my mma website guys.

    aloha,mark

  • aloha mark,

mahalo for your comment. but i gotta ask, what is mma? there are many options when i googled it!

  • Sounds good.

  • Sounds very much like something that Led Kaapana plays.

  • mahalo, simmo303. i consider it a compliment to sound like ledward! there are certain typical "phrases" or vamps in Hawaiian style slack key that remind us of other songs. i composed this one in 1997 while i was living in colorado before moving back to Hawaii. if you locate the partcular song you are thinking of, please let me know. i'd like to hear it.

  • True, good point. Playing thro' some discs now; I have about 20, so it may not even be Led! Have you heard him on Autoharp? Beautiful, I want one.

  • Salomila is what I was thinking of.

  • No, that's not quite right. It's the Salomila/New Opihi Moemoe duet on the 'Black Sand' cd. Stunning - I think that I'll just give up...

  • Beautiful, sweet melody. Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us!

God has truly blessed you with a special gift. Keep composing!

  • hmm i keep on listening to it because it makes me think of you and hawaii and i miss you soo much daddy. can't wait to see you at graduation!

  • daddo you rock! love, katy

  • FANTASTIC!!Very soothing and pleasant to look at and listen to. That's my son.

    Love ya

  • Bien joué!! Trés joli thème !

  • Saaaahwheeet!!
