More light directed towards the ground means less energy needs to be put into each light to produce the same effective ground lighting, and this saves everyone money and greatly darkens the skies. It's a win win for everyone but the power companies, it just requires cities to redesign their old/install new lights that are more efficient.
I am an astronomer, and so I know a fair bit about the light pollution issue because it greatly affects my job. First of all, one of the best solutions to light pollution is not to turn off the lights, but to design lights that direct all of their light towards the ground. Many light fixtures shoot light straight into the sky, which serves no purpose and costs the US about 2 billion dollars a year in energy costs, plus all of the CO2 released from the energy production. More light directed...
After the Northridge earthquake, thousands of people called 911 asking what the white cloud was covering the sky. It was the fucking Milky Way. They thought it was some kind of terrorist gas attack. Sad when people are so consumed with their own lives that they cant even look up the the beauty of the night sky.
When I was 4 or 5, I asked my mother why the stores kept the lights on at nigh and she said it was because of robbers. I said oh, so they can see what their stealing.
You are better off if you are functioning in the light than in the dark. Morality is Light. Immorality is Darkness. Snow White. The Prince of Darkness. White hats. Black hats. A white knight. Black-hearted. -- Also: say something on light pollution disrupting the carbon cycle and contributing to global climate change, but can't find anything online about it. maybe the research/evidence was inconclusive of just ginned up by the heritage foundation of telescopic manufacturers.
@styrofoamheart If you applied the tenants of atheism properly, you wouldn't believe in morality.
Atheism is one step towards the original human condition, nihilism. Take the next step, join us in nihilism. No god, no morality, no purpose, no destriny, no karma, no good, no evil, no right, no wrong.
@SWilliamJackson morality comes from how brains organize what is good and bad. all political arguments are over "what is good?" conservatives believe: You are better off if you don't challenge those with more power than you. progressives believe: You are better off if you are treated fairly than if you're not. Both agree: You are better off if you are healthy than if you are sick. Health is good in both camps. Obvious, right? Now Google contested concepts and lets talk about "Freedom."
Try to see it from a woman's perspective, Dave. Last night around 11:30pm I walked my sister's dog around the neighborhood. She was worried about me and said, "Just go down the straight to our neighbor's house and back. And bring your phone." Men don't understand how scary a dark street is to a woman.
@ArtemisMS Yes, I agree with you, and with @jeep6242 below. Basic street lights don't use that much energy compared to industrial and other sources of power consumption in this country...and to me it's worth the security of not walking around in pitch dark streets. Not saying light pollution isn't an issue, especially in large metropolitan areas (maybe Vegas could tone it down a little), but I don't see basic street lighting as the real problem.
Another thing is astronomers have to deal with it to, light is also flooding the atmosphere near populated areas. I know this is a little off topic but...
@harvster25 Not off topic at all. I had invested thousands in astronomy gear and it pisses me off when my neighbors refuse to turn off their insecurity lights. Shield the fucking things or point em at the ground. There is no point in lighting up the Goddamned sky. Car dealerships are the worst. They point their lights vertically.
Dave is right on this one.. Light pollution is a big problem. Light does not power by itself. Cenk is against Oil companies, coal companies, nuclear reactors, but still expects everything to be lit up like a stadium all night. It is just not sustainable.
@DrakeMagnum They actually did it? It is not much of a capital outlay, and it will mean a massive saving in electricity. They will ALL be doing it soon.
No Cenk, all the money is going to the dept of education, the dept of energy, dept of interior, HUD, welfare, and so on. And Cenk, just 'Lets raise the rich taxes just 4%" wont work. Because next year you will say "lets raise it another 2%", and then next year it will be "just 5% more" and so on. And taxing them at all is illegal anyway because brackets are illegal.
I look forward to Light Pollution II, real issues that need to be discussed, only found on dkinla :)
