Fabulous!! Personally I enjoy watching British Airways pilots the most. I believe they're the best I've personally seen. They make landing seem effortless, graceful and easy.
When you're in the air you're at the mercy of the air, on the ground, at the mercy of your tires. There was nothing unusual about that in air movement, just a very turbulent day.
@MrTutorialKnowsBest - seriously, the landing was perfect touchdown. it's the weather that was not perfect, and believe me it would have been fucking crazy scary if it crashed on the runway ;)
@bruno84 I think this footage explains itself for being in the news. The pilots of this aircraft pulled off an extraordinary piece of airmanship by landing safely in what appears to be borderline weather conditions.
@yellowcub86 aircraft always land with flaps down... they help the wings generate more lift and allow the aircraft to be controllable at slower speeds
@yellowcub86 Clean speed would be 200kt+ so landing clean is not an option. There's a myth that landing with less (or no) flap helps in a crosswind. It is however, just a myth and doesn't translate into reality. Operating anything from a jet to a single engine light aircraft in a strong crosswind I'd take full flap every time-unless the Pilot's Operating Handbook/SOPs say otherwise.
@yellowcub86 Well I'm no aerodynamics buff and it's a good long while since I did my commercial writtens! All I know is for the types I've operated use of normal landing flap setting is the recommended and so that's exactly what I do. The important thing in any crosswind is to get down and stay down and the recommended technique (by the POH or TRI) gives you the best chance of doing just that.
@Cat10980 Fair enough-you had me looking for my books there thinking I'd missed something! There has been a long debate about the benefits/drawbacks of more/less flap in crosswinds and I don't think I've ever seen a totally convincing answer. For small offsets (up to say 30 degrees off centreline) there is no (or very little) crosswind component until the flare anyway-the aircraft just weathercocks in to wind! You're right though-I need to do some reading! ;)
