Really it's a matter that Sunsara can see the many injustices that various hierarchies have caused in the world and has latched onto an ideology that she feels is a vehicle to emancipation ,and though I do feel many bash what socialism as a tool has to offer us ,she chooses to gloss over the wrongs of communism ,notice how she skipped by Stalin and made China's cultural revolution into some utopian acheivement ,which it wasn't ,it was an utter failure that left many intellectuals broken or dead
Is this chick Communist? Haven't she gotten the memo telling her that Communism sucks? In what World has she been living in? Under what basement floor has she been living in? She should open her eyes very well. I used to believe in all this Marxist garbage too. Thank God I only collected stupid commie pins and filled my room with crumy marxism books, never went to the street to talk this trash nor get in trouble with the police. She should go to Cuba and see for herself all that BS really is.
While I have agreed with everything she has said,I dont agree that communism would work in america.Just as I dont believe that democracy is right for the USSR.Just look at what happened when democracy was instituted in russia, the crime rate went up and poverty went up.What Im trying to say is that some countries need communism and some are incompatible with communism such as canada and the U.S.
I hope I didnt offend anyone, that wasnt my intention
"but i ahve to say its amazing what passes among people who pride themselfs with intelectual rigor and indeed are rigorous on all kinds of other questions, crude speculations , statistical speculations and evaluation methods that noone would take seriously in their own professions, reliance on highly subjective memoars by people with political agendas... these are somehow acceptable when the subject is comunissm."
you are the one doing it with religion and cant even see it.
sorry you are an utopian, communism is not the answer, nor revolution, massive upheaval and total change in economic and social structure. can and will only lead to civil war. We have to change peoples minds and change socitity from within. And in the world we live in today changes will only come slowly.. Not through revolution!
I will commend this video and the content of it as it is an oasis of reason and critical thinking, however, she speaks too fast - limiting as a result the effectivity of the speech, I hope she would take this onboard next time and perhaps enroll in a voice lesson to improve her speech delivery skill
I would love in live under a well functioning communist state and earn equal pay...but guess what my neighbor will not work as hard as me, he is a drunk and a drug user! Guess what that is why capitalism is a success...it's the far lazy, left that ruin it for everyone.
Firstly, spiller, your sexist comments are disgrace.
On another note, I was disapointed that Hedges wasn't able to reply. Its obvious in his books he's quite reactionary when it comes to any form of communism, and uses a lot of generalisations when passing comment on it.
Though I think there is good reason to be critical of the RCP's personality cult around Avakian and their cringeworthy support for Stalin and Mao.
Miss Taylors speech sounded pretty radical. She, bends the truth a little here and there, eg the Marx quote, the upcoming of the communist governments in Russia and China, interpreting the Bible. I think she's doing it for the right reasons and has good intentions, but being so extreme isn't helping, no matter what side your on.
Every time she talks, she seems to speak as if it's against the deeds of the global imperialists agenda, but in the end her only answer is furthering her own.
Her entire argument is flawed and superfluous; eroded with the strict belief that she simply has the answer by handing the keys over to someone else.
What the hell? Do you people really consider this revolutionary? It's simply one faction's mouthpiece using your issue as a host for their parasitic needs. And people seem to eat it up.
with the "human nature" argument, we go back to the nurture or nature argument. Do you believe some people are born selfish or society creates the selfishness. Capitalist society promotes a culture of selfishness and greed. One can argue that people are born selfish, but does that make every person born selfish? No.
So a communist society does not need everyone to be equal, but it needs a culture of sharing. A new "socialist man" needs to be created. It won't happen overnight.
We live an illusion, doesnt matter what you believe, god or not. People give power away, out of their own free will. To truly be free, you must take control of your own life, and freedom is a heavy burden for most.
People dont want to know how they can retrieve food in nature, they rather serve time working like a robot, and buy a package of food.
We're the toys of the rich, they dont need gods to rule us, any other kind of thoughtsystem will suffice.
You know what i said was shallow, but the substance isnt something new. Its rather ignorant. She thinks in terms of laws, beliefs, values, nationalities etc,.. thats how we are raised all over the world. It isnt what binds us, its psychological segregation. We do it to ourselves, therefore we do it to others.
We are primitive creatures, we do not understand what we are, even though we all think we do. Expect thousands of years more of shit, every system has its own evolution.
I think this was a really good exchange and got into a lot of the substance of both the arguments. However, I wish that there could have been time for rebuttal or question and answer.
But fucking right on Sunsara! And I also have to say, that while I disagree with Chris Hedges' position, hearing him here made me like him even more and appreciate that he is not only be such a strong fighter against injustice but also that he would engage on these questions on such a high level.
I think Chris started out saying all the right things, but then spiraled down into fallacious apologetics.
Sunsara--I thought--started out a little slower, making a few questionable claims (like the hierarchical structure of prehistoric societies). But she finished off quite strongly.
I agree with you, both were great to listen to, but halfway through Chris's arguments, I could not figure out why he still called himself a christian. Then toward the end, he departed from reason.
He was saying things like Memes don't exist? What planet do you have to live on to think that. And, memes can not be scientifically measured. Wow, tell that to the sociologists and psychologists that make their living scientifically measuring and studying ideas and how they spread.
these videos are excellent. Both of them make great points i have never heard put that way anywhere else. Chris makes the great point of the vause of human suffering, acknowledges that religion is man made but then advocates it. It doesn't make sense b/c religion's only claim to legitimacy is its claim of divine inspiration. Sunsara is a great speaker as well but did not mention the problems with communism. Overall, i loved both speeches. 2 speakers perfectly articulating my beliefs
communism does not work in practice because humans have different drives and aspirations. Communism, where it has been practiced, has had to exert a high amount of control to subjects living in a communist state to bring them to a level status. In other words, it has to work to temper the economic progress of the ambitious and drag up the less ambitious. It curbs creativity and individuality. I have travelled to communist states and the issue of control cannot be side stepped.
If I understand you correctly, then you are saying that everyone must be equal for communism to work. Yes, I believe you are correct. This is why I believe it can not scale. Small groups can agree to live at a level, but larger groups need a central government to tell them what their level is without the people having full say.
Sorry for the second reply, but I forgot to give you my idea on why communism flaws. I think it works in small groups, but can not scale to large societies.

Good thing communism never turned into oppression when it was put into practice....
Cambodia was sure good about avoiding genocide too.
I can understand serving the people, but killing for political rather than economic elites doesn't strike me as serving the people in the long run.

It's funny if you look at the statistics...people who think along these lines(girl in the video) have the lowest IQ'S. Its a fact.

Marxism and capitalism are basically the same.
Think anarcho-syndicalism/libertarian communism.

Let's step it up a notch.
