@nicckmete δ is always pronounced as "th" in the words "the" , "this", "though" etc. It may sound slightly differently depending on each person's accent but this is how it should sound
Hey guys im english and really just learning basic greek because its my families origin so im doing it for them, could anyone write the numbers out phonetically so i can pronounce them right? thankyou xx
HI!! ONE QUESTION.... WELL I SPEAK SPANISH AS MY ORIGINAL LANGUAGE... AND ENGLISH AND GREEK I LEARNED IN USA. I WORKED WITH GREEK PEOPLE OVER 3 YEARS. AND I LOVE GREEK. BUT THEY TEACH ME THE NUMBERS FROM 30 TO 90 WITHOUT A "N" IN THE LAST PART. I AM SORRY FRO MY GREEK SPELLING... I JUST SPEACK IT!! WELL IT IS TRIATA(30) FOR ME BUT HERE SAYS TRIANDA OR TRIANTA...SOME LIKE THAT. SO WHAT I LEARN IS RIGHT?? OR YOURS IS LIKE MORE FORMAL O SOMETHING LIKE THAT?? I APRECIATTE AN ANSWER!!! EFKAREESTO!!
@josemontenegro13 actually both pronounciations are very close. Formally the greek NT is the equivalent to the latin D. So, the most appropriate pronounciation is TRIADA, SARADA, PENIDA etc. However, it is common to add an "N" before D (actually because D=NT) in the pronounciation for convenience, which depends on the accent of the person who speaks, each word, etc. So both TRIADA and TRIANDA etc etc are correct but "TRIANTA" (with the english pronounciation) wouldn't sound very nice.
@aggelospanatha OOOOOOOOHHHHH.....SO THATS WHAT IT IS!! I APRECIATTE IT!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! NOW EVERYTHING IS CLEAR ABOUT IT FOR ME!! I GOT A MESSAGE FROM LINAAAAP TOO... AND BOTH ANSWERS HELPED ME A LOT!! THANK U SO MUCH.... BEST REGARDS!! =)
@mufclvr the right pronounciation of 7 is epta... with p.... but in common spelling out on the streets you'll hear it mostly as efta,,, with an f.... now for the 11 (eleven) the right pronounciation is with (delta) but on the streets you'll hear it with t or nt pronounciation ENTEKA or ENDEKA.... these diferent pronounciations have been created by the people. people on the streets, all over the world, aren't speaking their languages with the right pronounciation or syntax,,,,
Is the Greek word for eleven spelled as ένδεκα οr έντεκα by Greeks? I've always felt that ένδεκα seemed more correct as it symbolizes εν + δέκα = ένδεκα.
That is called the "rule of euphony" euphony (ευφωνία - nice/good voicing or clear voicing). This how it goes: when you speak you may soften the Π,π (p) and K,k (k) sounds to Φ,φ(f) and Χ,χ(h) respectively. Either is correct but acceptable only in spoken language when writen Επτά is always writen with p not f even though its common an some greeks may write it with f it is incorrect. Hope that helps. Nice job linaaaap1
Επτά (epta) [seven], Πτερό (ptero) [feather], Αρχιτεκτονική(arhitektoniki) [architecture]. They may also be pronounced as "eFta",Ftero","ArhiteHtoniki" but as i pointed out only in spoken language if writen according to this pronunciation they are considered as being misspelled.
Actually, if you take a better look, the sounds match exactly the letters and there are not multiple pronunciations for each letter, but only one. And of course we eould never want to let our alphabet change. We are proud of our language, as it is.
no because greek is better than english. Because im greek and i use greek writing on my paper in american school and they think i'm foreign. {only sometimes though}
hi, thank you very much for the lessons!! I have a question, the number 11 is it right? because you say ENDEKA but it is written ENTEKA...please dont stop teaching us!!!

Is there a difference?
AVIATIO 2 years ago
Well, nowadays, we mostly use "έντεκα", since "ένδεκα" is considered "old". The original word is "ένδεκα" and it is definitely not wrong to use it.
linaaaap1 2 years ago
its έντεκα but it could be ..i dont know the right word. .produced by εν+δεκα

I was taught to pronounce 7 as efta, and not epta. Is it a regional thing?
petie71 3 years ago
It's exactly the same thing, efta is more common! Epta is just a bit more formal.

i think they should convert there alphabet to latin/english letters, its really confusing becuz the sounds dont match the letters
murcielagodog 3 years ago

konstantinoss1984 3 years ago 7
actually the Greek alphabet gave birth to the Latin alphabet, so it is the Latin Alphabet that 'doenst match the sounds' ;)

yay, let's all start το υσε δε γκρεεκ αλφαμπετ! ^^ down with Latin letters! :D anyways the Greek ones look so much nicer than our Latin letters..
