Kid is Schala's clone, as Belthasar puts it in his "Project Kid" plan. Kid went back in time from 1020 AD to 1010 AD to stop Wazuki from drowning Serge. Serge is just Serge, nobody from first game are related to him. Serge was sick at one point and Wazuki and Miguel were sailing him somewhere to get treatment but Serge's cries were heard by Schala who sent a lightning storm to direct their ship off course and instead sent them to Chronopolis where Serge came into contact with the Frozen Flame.

Anyway, after coming into contact with the Frozen Flame, Serge became the Arbiter while Wazuki was corrupted by the Flame. The magnetic storm from Schala caused Chronopolis' defenses to fail, which allowed the three to go inside. As Arbiter, Serge was the only one now who can use the Frozen Flame, which was already being used by FATE to power Chronopolis.

My biggest guess on why they put no music for this battle is so you could get the sequence of the elements right for the true ending, epic battle music is distracting.
Serge is the son of Schala... they both have blue hair. Kid is the daughter of Marle and Crono. They could be descendants if that's how far in the future Cross is from Trigger.

In the fight if you use an element you get a pitch and when you merge all the pitches together you get the "A Faraway Promise" tune so you created the final boss battle music... INGENIOUS!

@MyCrazycat12 they defeated schala/lavos in chrono trigger already, but Serge's death and then rescue by Kid eventually fucked everything up, so voila, schala/lavos lives again. someone correct me if i'm wrong, but if you think back on the time Serge discovered the frozen flame behind Nadia's Bell, the ghost kids (little versions of crono, marle, and lucca) will blame serge for messing up all their efforts to save the world.
i love how the music goes well with the battle but i especially love 6:10 where the gravity ball comes into contact with the enemy and the music compliments the action
@Drowzee64 Not to save Schala, but to defeat the Time Devourer, when Crono and his friends defeated Lavos, they created a paradox, which sent Lavos to the Darkness Beyond Time, where discarded beings go, there, it merged with Schala and was about to destroy everything, so Balthasar, who is pretty much a good chessmaster, created a plan in order to defeat Lavos at the Darkness Beyond Time, saving Schala but at the same time fixing the paradox.
@DarkSilverCraig so according to CT DS, chrono and his party weren't able to defeat the TIme Devourer, and Magus was sent to the dimension where CC takes place, where later on he regains his memory. Then comes Serge and friends and were able to free Schala. But how come she is in child form.
@drecklia I tend to disregard CT DS in terms of the new ending, as it is more like a retcon a LOT of years after the story really came out, so they should either remake CC in order to addapt it to CT DS or just LEAVE THE MOTHERFUCKING STORY ALONE. I mean, Square has been delaying an actual sequel for AGES and now they say "If fans really want a sequel, then they should buy the original game"... yeah, I'm no paying again for the EXACT SAME GAME I've paid for twice before
I think the Chrono Cross is supposed to be the music in this fight. It makes the notes to the song in order of the elements you cast. Very ambient but I agree it would have been better to use the actual song instead of nothing. We can hear the notes of the elements just fine.
During development of the game, he was originally suppose to be Magus, but that was dropped due to having too many characters and a his back story would have been complicated.
I remember playing Chrono Trigger as a rom a while back, and when I beat it, my buddy loaned me Chrono Cross. I remember the one thing I kept thinking after beating it was 'when is the next one coming out??' that was about 8 years ago

the final boss of CT was lavos, but after being defeated fused itself with schala to form the dream devourer. The dream devourer would evolve to the time devourer which is this final boss.
also, schala sent kid (and her pendant) to lucca, who is one of the main characters in CT, so that she could raise her.
there are more stuff, but the more you think about it, the more complicated it gets.
Having music in the last boss battle would confuse the musical types, like me. I just relied on sound to put the right elements in. Still, this song does fit perfectly.

I agree with CaOmDaYn. Square probably wanted the players to focus on hearing the sound of the elements and encouraging them to use the chrono cross rather than the conventional way. But the song you put in fits nicely.
The Battle is incredible with this music playing. Of course, without it, it's better to hear the sound of the elements. Great video, and a favorite of mine.

People always get shocked at the fact that there is no music during this battle and yes it does suck, but Square definently had it's reasons for this. To me this is not actually suppose to be a fight, but instead a focus on freeing schala. They wanted to put emphasis on the song of life played by your elements to use with the chrono cross, thats why everything is so quiet.
Thats really just my best guess i don't know if its 100% correct but just a thought is all.
You are right. You get a TERRIBLE ending if you just kill the Time Devourer without freeing Schala. The purpose was fighting not for victory, but for Schala's freedom.
I agree. I think there may have been some artistic and/or creative reasons behind it as well, which may have been the inspiration for the SoL method itself. but I actually think it was a cool concept.
@CaOmDaYn I understand it's about freeing Schala and sometimes silence is good, but to me I think it doesn't work so well. The awesome background, the beast you have to fight doesn't seem right without music. You don't really silence these types of fights, especially if it's the last battle in the game. If it was just trying to free Schala, I'd understand, but you're not just trying to save her, you're fighting a beast as well, the same beast who was in the first game. They should have music.
one of my absolute favorite rpgs ever. i liked this game more than final fantasy, and ill probably like it more than final fantasy 13. loved chrono trigger also

Nah, I think it was deliberate that no music played. They probably wanted that. I mean, this is Square, who had some of the best final boss music in games, so I doubt they missed this in development.

It['s because of the secret ending and how you achieve it. I assume artistically the nature of a void makes sense for a no music boss, but the song you put in is actually the song that plays of the notes to kill the boss.
Basically, according to the Playstation version of chrono trigger, the people of Zeal dyed their hair blue and crap so they didn't look like 'normal' people.
use elemtent to complete the element bar and you'll see the real ending.
might in case you already know it that's fine, just one question. why not use double sword holder, "Glen" to make a combine attack with serge.? I plyed it around in few year ago. and played it numerous time because after you won it first time you get a fast fowart item to foward the game
You have no idea how to manipulate the Stamina bars, do you? If you get everyone up to full Element levels, and then up to full stamina, and defend until JUST AFTER the Time Devourer casts an element, you have just enough time to cast six low-level Elements in a row, as long as you didn't bring characters who happen to have shitty Stamina Recovery rates.
Once you complete the Chrono Cross's element sequence, you're actually in the clear, because Time Devourer won't attack or act again, ever.
Kid is Schala's daughter-clone. It isn't the exact same person occupying the same space at the same time. They are as different as me and the bum that lives down the street.
I believe if you keep defending lavos will do most of the color order for you so you just have to do the last two with the chrono cross i'm not sure if you did it that way but i faintly remember doing it like that because the i kept messing up the order then i realized lavos essentially gave it to me lol it was also mentioned in a Game informer mag i had at the time
I saw the new final ending for Chrono Trigger yesterday, and I really don't like it. It really is TOO dark and hopeless, and a complete reversal from the original endings..
Anyway, this boss looks too weak to be a "Time devourer". I realize that's because the OP knows exactly what to do and when, but still.
That ending was only added to kind of give people who played Chrono Cross a feel of what actually happened to start the chain of events with Dream/Time Devourer in the first place. It's like the final FMV sequence after the credits that gives a vague description of the Porre army invasion that leads to it being the dominant military force in Cross, as well as leading the player to finding Masamune again.
Never has any game before this one made me go "What the hell is going on!?" so many times in my life, still a good game though, and I did got the hang of the plot eventually.
Even if it is Lavos, the closest it resembles is one of those Lavos spawns that you see up on Death Peak on CT. And I'd be willing to accept the fact that that IS Schala on its back, because CC's story was so convoluted anyway. That isn't to say I didn't like it though.
That is not Schala....Unless Schala really was some 6 year old in CT..or this is a totally different universe where Schala and Magus aren't nearly as badass as their true versions.

It can be any type of element, offensive or defensive then after you cast those elements in proper order, use the chrono cross element then Tada !

there is a simple trick - chrono cross is lvl 8 but you can put it on the first slot - it will be chrono cross -7 but it work properly :)

People always get shocked at the fact that there is no music during this battle and yes it does suck, but Square definently had it's reasons for this. To me this is not actually suppose to be a fight, but instead a focus on freeing schala. They wanted to put emphasis on the song of life played by your elements to use with the chrono cross, thats why everything is so quiet.
Thats really just my best guess i don't know if its 100% correct but just a thought is all.

You are right. You get a TERRIBLE ending if you just kill the Time Devourer without freeing Schala. The purpose was fighting not for victory, but for Schala's freedom.

I agree. I think there may have been some artistic and/or creative reasons behind it as well, which may have been the inspiration for the SoL method itself. but I actually think it was a cool concept.

@CaOmDaYn I understand it's about freeing Schala and sometimes silence is good, but to me I think it doesn't work so well. The awesome background, the beast you have to fight doesn't seem right without music. You don't really silence these types of fights, especially if it's the last battle in the game. If it was just trying to free Schala, I'd understand, but you're not just trying to save her, you're fighting a beast as well, the same beast who was in the first game. They should have music.

Nah, I think it was deliberate that no music played. They probably wanted that. I mean, this is Square, who had some of the best final boss music in games, so I doubt they missed this in development.
Its probably suppose to be symbolic: the darkness of time where everything goes to zero.

It['s because of the secret ending and how you achieve it. I assume artistically the nature of a void makes sense for a no music boss, but the song you put in is actually the song that plays of the notes to kill the boss.

use elemtent to complete the element bar and you'll see the real ending.
might in case you already know it that's fine, just one question. why not use double sword holder, "Glen" to make a combine attack with serge.? I plyed it around in few year ago. and played it numerous time because after you won it first time you get a fast fowart item to foward the game

You have no idea how to manipulate the Stamina bars, do you? If you get everyone up to full Element levels, and then up to full stamina, and defend until JUST AFTER the Time Devourer casts an element, you have just enough time to cast six low-level Elements in a row, as long as you didn't bring characters who happen to have shitty Stamina Recovery rates.
Once you complete the Chrono Cross's element sequence, you're actually in the clear, because Time Devourer won't attack or act again, ever.

They're more like echos. The chibi-forms they take aren't supposed to be taken as their original forms.
Mostly I just think it was their way of getting out of re-designing the characters to fit the new artists' style, actually.

I believe if you keep defending lavos will do most of the color order for you so you just have to do the last two with the chrono cross i'm not sure if you did it that way but i faintly remember doing it like that because the i kept messing up the order then i realized lavos essentially gave it to me lol it was also mentioned in a Game informer mag i had at the time

I never even knew what console this was for.
I saw the new final ending for Chrono Trigger yesterday, and I really don't like it. It really is TOO dark and hopeless, and a complete reversal from the original endings..
Anyway, this boss looks too weak to be a "Time devourer". I realize that's because the OP knows exactly what to do and when, but still.
Nice to see they freed her after all.

That ending was only added to kind of give people who played Chrono Cross a feel of what actually happened to start the chain of events with Dream/Time Devourer in the first place. It's like the final FMV sequence after the credits that gives a vague description of the Porre army invasion that leads to it being the dominant military force in Cross, as well as leading the player to finding Masamune again.

That is SO not lavos.
It's a Time Devourer.
And Lavos wasn't a Time Devourer, he was a fucking WORLD devourer.
But the Time Devourer wasn't a very hard boss, he didn't do much. Compared to the dragons and FATE, Time Devourer was a piece of cake :C

Even if it is Lavos, the closest it resembles is one of those Lavos spawns that you see up on Death Peak on CT. And I'd be willing to accept the fact that that IS Schala on its back, because CC's story was so convoluted anyway. That isn't to say I didn't like it though.
