  • SIMPLY AWESOME.

  • Lest we forget...Miles was one of the greatest soloist to have ever lived! It's always easier now to play better...having have listened to one that came before and improve on what they did. If Miles not being Miles had a Miles before himself...he'd be even greater than we now know he is.

  • such a good homage to miles, just listen to his tone on this solo!

  • this solo is nice but the album one is even better

  • @livingatmidnight miles isnt actually that great of a player, he was more of an innovator and band leader than a player. it was his biggest dream to play bop with charlie parker, and when he was finally actually on stage with charlie, he couldnt keep up with the tempo!

  • @RobbieMacIntyre

I disagree. Miles had an amazing style and tone. He may not have had the greatest technical skill, but what trumpet players can say they have his melodic sense and such beautifully "exploring" solos? The rest, I do agree with!

  • @RobbieMacIntyre This ridiculous statement couldn't be any farther from the truth. When Miles was healthy, hitting the shed, and inspired, NOBODY could touch him. Before you even start talking about what he played, his sound was the very essence of jazz. If you want proof, why don't you watch the video of So What with the Gil Evans orchestra, has anyone ever played with that beautiful of a sound?

  • @intrepidpooch I dont have time to argue about this, its just stupid

  • ìt's not So What, it's Impressions

  • @bill18286 It's both actually, the melody of Impressions with the bass line from So What (the Directions project was a tribute to both Miles and Trane).

  • ........ FANTASTIC ROY HAR THE MOST BIGGEST , really really .......

  • nice !...

  • Roy and Herbie do Miles.

  • Niiice! Thanks for posting this.

Herbie gets together with Roy like well hmmm I wonder who?

  • HOLD ON! . . . Was that a Sesame Street reference at 4:55 till 5:02?!

  • he plays just like Miles does at "live in Philmore" 30 years ago, am i to hard if i say that its maby time for something new...

  • @airtuben ... It's a tribute to Davis

  • @fenixkine ... ok. but the text says its a tribute to Trane.

  • @airtuben ...I think that was the point...to keep Miles alive.

  • Great playing by Roy.

  • @livingatmidnight

The trumpetplayer with a amazing intension!

  • got both types of chops. Damn Roy.

  • peace and love

  • ho nice :)

  • I like it when Hargrove goes up to the high note on the trumpet. Really good.

  • that's a sick solo by roy, but i'm not sure which i like more: herbie's comping or roy's solo

  • @djkcel do u know the number 'I'm not so sure' from hargrove??

    SuperduperSolo!

  • @djkcel The interplay between Herbie and Roy is a joy to watch and listen to. Miles' spirit hangs heavily over this performance.

  • questo solo è un cazzo di capolavoro perdio.

  • ahhh where's mike's solo?

  • what a great collaboration

  • whata combo

  • i like this version more than the cd one, but both are incredible, listen to herbie with the comping, my god!!!!!!

  • Roy is wasted again. LOL

  • I thought the same thing. That is unfortunate.

  • what are you talking about ?

  • He looks wasted.

  • I doubt he's wasted, I mean he could be, but he's feeling the song hard. If you watch him play I Remember Clifford he looks like he's about to cry at one point, again feeling the song.

  • @Zombbg4 he probably is high

  • nowadays its only the hopeless dopes who do dope.

  • He looked the same way on another video that was posted here.

  • Comment removed

  • anyone know what kind of horn roy is playin on?

  • it's an inderbinen dude

  • oh sick, thanks man

  • YEAH!!!!!

  • I saw them in London unreal

  • yeah yeah so fuckin cool!

this tune sounds like miles davis's bitches brew style.

  • George Mraz on bass this time..

  • Roy is shredding so hard .Roy has it all.

  • who's the bass and drums players please?

  • brian blade on drums

    john patitucci on bass

  • never mind, i'm wrong

they were only on the cd that was released, with the same band

  • Willie Jones III on drums

    George Mraz on Bass

  • DAVE HOLLAND ON BASS

  • It's George Mraz. Besides the obvious playing differences, Dave Holland is bald and isn't George Mraz.

  • Isn't that Dave Holland not Patitucci?

  • George Mraz.

  • Herbie needs Jesus for puttin Roy thru that!!lol. Damn good job Roy!!. The cd recording has nuthin on this live, altho the whole project i must say is top notch! Brecker R.I.P.

  • What kind of mouthpiece is Roy using?

  • that's a Monette B7F mouthpiece with an Inderbinden trumpet (made in Switzerland)

  • This is devasting !

  • waahh, holy shit, this is crazy...

    excellent job, dudes!!!

    5 stars

  • This is some intense stuff!!! I wish more of it was shown.

  • Because of Roy's hair. He is now dubbed in my book as the "Last Trumpet Samurai" What?

Tom Cruise was a white guy playing the Last Samurai. I think Roy is perfect for that name =]

  • He no longer has dreads.

  • Hargrove, the Bob Marley of trumpet.

  • I was thinking, should i look up d'angelo, badu or hargrove. I chose hargrove...he's so diverse! (besides, I couldn't find prince!)

  • all of those are reaaaaaaaally good :D D'angelo doesn't have that much material though... which sucks cause i love his work and think he's a really special artist :/ yeah but hargroves rocks no doubt x)

  • Can this concert be purchased on DVD ?

  • 5 étoiles !

  • This is why Roy Hargrove is the best trumpeter alive. Amazing.

  • Now thats some nice playing music !

  • one of the best.

  • this is so killing !!

  • Is this video avail for purchase or download?

  • The solitude, passion, and spirit of Miles in this solo.

  • RIP Michael Brecker

  • why it ends before brecker`s solo?

  • Lets see...the album was fantastic and this is even better!

  • Post More...or tell us where u got this clip from...

  • Mraz is the most versatile bass player in business. He just makes everyone sound great.

  • sweet!

  • Wow listen to Herbie's comping at 1:46-1:48 and then listen to what Hargrove plays at 2:26!

  • Very good^^

    Herbie is the best !!!

  • haha! good ears

  • the spirit of Miles

  • How the musicians play off each other is amazing. The way they listen and react to each other is perfect. This is what jazz is all about

  • I'm loving Mr Roy Hargrove- this clip totally took me into the music. I just had to watch the whole thing... awesome

  • where's brian blade at? i'm missin him here, man...

  • herbie is a beast on this clip

  • pretty cool man......

  • wow

  • Roy's first phrase is beautiful--he's improvising so purely almost on a Miles-like level without imitating him. He's really carrying on the spirit of Miles, Freddie, Lee, Clifford, and Woody while still possessing his own voice. What a great player...

  • hmmm to me Roy sounds completely outclassed... it seems to be waiting and waiting to burst free. I was waiting throughout the whole clip for him to really let loose and it never quite happened.

  • i think that's exactly the feeling he wanted us to have... =D

  • well maybe... but i just feel cheated. its this beautifully crafted solo, just with the climax taken out. his solo on the album is fantastic, i much prefer it to this one

  • I like this one better actually.

  • dude... this solo definately climaxes

  • thats right Roy!!

  • Impressions. What a great band. Hargrove tone sounds the same, but around this time (2002) he seems to have more range than on other recordings i've heard.

  • What beautiful dissonance.

  • More like this please, Herbie. Less of the slick and electronic stuff.

    This is great...

    What beautiful dissonance.

Is it just me, or did Roy improve his tone? I don't remember it being this full. I could easily be wrong, though...

  • Stop bull shittin' an post the rest of this gig.
