Lest we forget...Miles was one of the greatest soloist to have ever lived! It's always easier now to play better...having have listened to one that came before and improve on what they did. If Miles not being Miles had a Miles before himself...he'd be even greater than we now know he is.

@livingatmidnight miles isnt actually that great of a player, he was more of an innovator and band leader than a player. it was his biggest dream to play bop with charlie parker, and when he was finally actually on stage with charlie, he couldnt keep up with the tempo!
I disagree. Miles had an amazing style and tone. He may not have had the greatest technical skill, but what trumpet players can say they have his melodic sense and such beautifully "exploring" solos? The rest, I do agree with!
@RobbieMacIntyre This ridiculous statement couldn't be any farther from the truth. When Miles was healthy, hitting the shed, and inspired, NOBODY could touch him. Before you even start talking about what he played, his sound was the very essence of jazz. If you want proof, why don't you watch the video of So What with the Gil Evans orchestra, has anyone ever played with that beautiful of a sound?
@bill18286 It's both actually, the melody of Impressions with the bass line from So What (the Directions project was a tribute to both Miles and Trane).
I doubt he's wasted, I mean he could be, but he's feeling the song hard. If you watch him play I Remember Clifford he looks like he's about to cry at one point, again feeling the song.
Herbie needs Jesus for puttin Roy thru that!!lol. Damn good job Roy!!. The cd recording has nuthin on this live, altho the whole project i must say is top notch! Brecker R.I.P.
all of those are reaaaaaaaally good :D D'angelo doesn't have that much material though... which sucks cause i love his work and think he's a really special artist :/ yeah but hargroves rocks no doubt x)
Roy's first phrase is beautiful--he's improvising so purely almost on a Miles-like level without imitating him. He's really carrying on the spirit of Miles, Freddie, Lee, Clifford, and Woody while still possessing his own voice. What a great player...
hmmm to me Roy sounds completely outclassed... it seems to be waiting and waiting to burst free. I was waiting throughout the whole clip for him to really let loose and it never quite happened.
well maybe... but i just feel cheated. its this beautifully crafted solo, just with the climax taken out. his solo on the album is fantastic, i much prefer it to this one
Impressions. What a great band. Hargrove tone sounds the same, but around this time (2002) he seems to have more range than on other recordings i've heard.
SIMPLY AWESOME.

Because of Roy's hair. He is now dubbed in my book as the "Last Trumpet Samurai" What?
Tom Cruise was a white guy playing the Last Samurai. I think Roy is perfect for that name =]
