Jack Dempsey's like Convict's are appropriately named; they're mean and territorial. I've had both and they never locked jaws but would do the stare-down/puff out their gills thing... like every day. Pure entertainment but I'd have to fix the rocks & plants every damn morning... and the water would get all messed! lol

The first time I had 2 tiger Oscar bought from the same store, same tank, and places in my tank at the same time. Few days later one of them died.

@Klethix I have a Jack Dempsey, a red blood parrot, a Managuense, and a pair of convicts all living together well in a 55 gallon aquarium. None of them are bigger than 6 inches, but I'm already looking into getting a larger aquarium. Just make sure they have plenty of spaces they can each claim and enough space.

I agree convicts are extremely tough. Argualbly the toughest american cichlid. I have a couple in with my africans though and they fight differrently. I suppose the africans should be winning in my tank because the tank is set up for them.

I'm not 100% sure of this due to the lack of lighting under the decor, but I'm pretty sure the fish that the dempsey was trying to evict was a jaguar cichlid (cichlasoma managuense). I kept a pair of them with a pair of dempseys and they were constantly trying to take over each others' hiding spots.
