This is a bit of evil genius from the people at Microsoft! I'm not complaining, I mean to say, as the end user for this service I think SkyDrive is excellent. I've been using it to store my documents, photographs, and my personal recordings since its general release to the public. I've tried organizing my work via GoogleDocs and it has proven to be quite frustrating, as well as counter-intuitive. Google's service simply isn't flexible enough for my needs.
Basicly, they don't work on line. They uses SkyDrive as a DropBox and edit on their local installation.
Google Docs do edit online, working and sharing without need to publish changes to each others. That is why they need to track exactly what each one does.
Version managing is harder than working interactivly with the document with all others at the same time.
Though being a Google fan, I agree Microsoft has a better synergy between their web- and desktop applications. That's mostly like since they have been in the industry for so long.
However, Google Docs is free-to-use unlike Microsoft Office. These videos are amazing due to the fact Google will once again keep improving their amazing products. Competition is always vital for the global software development.
@ocelopan Oh, so then they don't get the better on-line editing which you get with Office 365? Pitty.
Any way, the things they do off line local on their computer is can be done with Google Doc on line. With propper real time shareing, so you see what the other does.
No mention of expensive M$ license fees. We're sticking to Google Docs, and if we have to collaborate with Office victimz use something like syncdocs.com to keep in sync.
Do you have syncronous editing at the same time in the document, so you can see what the others do, in real time?
Comments and version handling IS working ok in Google Docs.
About not able to make good looking papers in Google Docs, try Google+ at plus google com /photos/112996514195006774871/albums/5699320343466922033 where it is done.
@P3t3rU5 thats right, interesting. but your suggestion would be? google docs? well yeah of course.. i mean it's free and everyone on google already has access to it anyways.. but i mainly use dropbox for easy sharing.. since it's multiplatform.. there's now google docs native apps for my blackberry i'm afraid..
skydrive is a free app... lol, this advert is really interresting, because it tells us directly and clearly what it is about. I like, when we are talking clearly... don´tlike saying something but meaning something else... *LIKE*
@elitewolverine Well if you don't know docs that are created in google docs don't take ANY space so that's like infinite space right? And this videochat is in the same window of the doc? oh no it uses live messenger that horrible thing to use...
Horrible thing to use? yea because using a messenger is so horrid.
then why offer data storage solutions? Probably because your gonna need more power than just google docs. Because if google docs is all you needed there would be NO need to OFFER storage solutions.
@elitewolverine Well try digsby where u can reply to IM without leaving what u are doing :/ in messenger i have to switch to the IM window everytime, has that annoying sounds, has much useless crap like games, smiles and winks and u can only videochat with one person at a time. The more storage solution is for people who want to store every file on their machines backed up. And in google hangouts u can videochat with more than one ppl at the time and colaborate in docs all in the same window
@elitewolverine yes, but all have to run the same OS (more or less). And you still need to have MS Office installed to make those "advanced" stuff. And what about see what the others do when they works on the document, without the need to refresh on your side?
And google docs only goes so advanced, you still either need other free office software or MS office.
If your in a school enviorment, they use MS Office, business? 95% probably use MS Office.
Without the need to refresh? "There is no way to highlight changes made by a particular editor in real time during a writing session, nor a way to jump to the changes made." taken from wiki for google docs.
And you dont need the same os. did this video not mention mac?
@elitewolverine No, MS Office doesn't run on my Linux machine, even if I would pay for it.
To do the more advanced things in this video, you really need run MS Office locally.
Anyway, Google docs is more advanced than this free version of MS Office 365.
Version handling has nothing to do with real time update. And you can trace what others do i Google Docs, just not down to the details of this Office. Question, is that a problem? Mostly not.
@elitewolverine then wiki is not updated and there's another advantage of google docs it gets constant updates, but ok i'll try this office, you should do the same and try google docs
Now I really know that Google is winning the 'office' war. Microsoft seems desperate in this video by emphasizing the features of the hybrid solution of Office365 (simple content) Office on the mac (graphics) and Office @home.
:) Of course as a Google specialist I don't agree with the MS. I enjoy the 100% web vision of Google Apps everyday. And I collaborate daily on documents (which can contain complex formatting if needed) in Google Docs.
I am curious about the Google reaction on this video:)
@JoaolvcMelo thanks for the response. I mean the people collaborating. i do have a win live id and sent a share to a yahoo and a college address and never received the email with the link, so i guess everybody needs to have a live id which is a huge fail if you ask me.
@elearningpd - I don't think the same way. I use the cloud mainly as a way to simplify my life - and to me that means more of "I want the file I use on my Desktop synced with the file I use on my laptop and tablet and an equivalent version of the file accessible from the web." To you it seems to be more of "I wanna do all of my stuff online; I don't care how it looks or how efficient it is." granted - the video is about ed, but to say Microsoft's missed the boat on the whole of SD is misleading
Even though some parts of the video are true, I still think that Microsoft made Web Office too difficult to use, instead of Google Docs where creating a document is so intuitive that you don't get lost at any time. Sorry Microsoft but this ad makes you look desperate and scared about Google Docs' success.
If Office Live is touting layout, please support columns with text flow or text boxes (like the desktop version) .... imagine the collaboration for newsletters and other basic DTP. It would kill gDocs!
This video shows that Microsoft completely misses the point about Google Docs. Collaboration Cloud based tools are not about handing in "nice looking" work and as a teacher I don't really give a rats arse about what the work looks like. I get my students to use Google Docs because they have now genuinely collaborated with ease online regardless of what machine or application they have in front of them. Sorry Microsoft, you have missed the boat with this one.
Great video. Office Live needs the Print Layout document view. This is the only reason I don't use the Word web app and what makes me reluctant to recommend it sometimes. It just looks like you're typing on a giant piece of paper with no boarders or rulers. I really wish you guys would update it.
Nice, but I'm not uploading my source code on skydrive!!!!

Hahaha, oh the irony. So Microsoft need a Google service to make their videos accessible?
But when it comes to the facts...
Image import has always been around in Google docs.
Charts are avaliable and look good i Google Docs.
Captions are also avaliable and customizeable to the same level as in the video.
Revision and tracking has been around since at least 2008 in google docs.
Seriously MS, was this your best shoot? It's more fraudulent than your "get the facts" campaign on Vista.
