Yeah, well, even though a lot of the Sherman crewmen were being mauled and killed like the ones we see here, the US army commanders still didn't want to change their outdated tank doctrine and allow for tanks that were designed for tank vs tank combat. Like the T20 tanks and this M26 Pershing, which was based on the T20. As a result, much more soldiers than it was necessary died.
@Marine475 i have no idea what i said when i first commented, but i dont really care. they were doing their jobs. it was either kill everyone they were told to kill, or get killed themselves and potentially their families. which would you choose?
Interesting viewpoint. The Sherman tank stalked the Panther even though it was vastly superior. When the Sherman was hit the crew abandoned the tank and ran. Then when the Panther was hit by the Pershing the Panther crew abandoned the tank and ran. However, somehow this equates to "brave to the last" for the Panther crew and.....what for the Sherman crew that had not only battled a superior tank, but had stalked it knowing they had little chance?
@Rikki0 'brave to the last' probably cus the panther crew had no real chance of winning and yet they still decided to fight until they were defeated. stupid maybe but it somewhat justifies the statement.
btw the sherman tank didnt stalk the panther it was the other way around, making half of your comment false ;)
@wericification German Panther tank cews usually didn't bother to fire more then just one round on a Sherman because a 75mm would go straight true and it would be waste of ammo.

That Vermaht didn't make crimes - the big and dangerous error. The majority of crimes against civilians and prisoners of war have been made by army parts.
what a shame we didnt have the pershing earlier - it would haved the lives of hundreds of american and british tank crews who were slaughtered in crappy shermans and those lousy british tanks.
To all the people talking about how these are Nazi dogs and deserved to die: these tankers were part of the German Wehrmacht, not the SS. The Wehrmacht was the army, whereas the SS was a politically motivated militia. The Wehrmacht consisted mostly of people that were conscripted, forced into military service by the law of their country. Just like US and British men were forced to serve. They fought for their country. The fact that their country was run by an evil dictator does not change this.
@wericification This is incorrect. As you can see in the video, the Panther crew is under fire from infantry during their escape (the tracer shots are highlighted), and the second shot of the Pershing hits before the gunner leaves the turret. The reason the second shot only hit this late is because these tank guns had to be reloaded manually, and this could take around a minute, depending on the loader's skill and experience with the rare and newly introduced Pershing tank.
Just to clarify, the reason the Sherman crew bailed is because their tank was disabled almost immediately. You can reference the movie on The Battle of Köln (which this exact same footage is in). The Sherman in question (75mm armament) could NOT penetrate a Panther in the frontal armor. Tank crews normally bail in situations where the vehicle is disabled, as they would normally be assigned to a new tank that had lost crew. IIRC, most of the Panther crew died to shrapnel.
@wericification I don't think the Pershing crew allowed the German tank crew to escape. This clip is in slow motion. In reality the time between the shots was probably the time necessary to reload the main gun of Pershing. Had they wished to spare the crew, they would have waited for the Germans to leave the tank, instead of shooting at it with a crew member still trying to jump out of the turret.
your facts are a little wrong, armor of panther :110mm armor of pershing : 76mm armor of sherman : 53 mm and the gun of sherman was a hig velocity 75mm

What's the problem with you bunch of arm chair generals? A soldier is a soldier no matter what army, and the only thing that all wanted to do was to go home. Gen. Patton once made the comment that there was only two armies in the world that could fight in any direction they wanted to go was the American army and the German army. Germany ran out of material, men and time. Their soldiers fought bravely for THEIR country, same for ours. There is really no differnace. WW2 was a terrible war.
That is in Köln and the 3rd army lost his second pershing on this day after a battle with a tiger1 before this battle a scout "panther was knocked out"
@1chuckjones they were Wehrmacht (Army)..not SS not Nazi. Also the whole fuckin 3rd army were in town and these guys stood their ground to the bitter end..........wonder how long you'd stand fast before shittin yourself and running away?
@spottydog4477 So they were the normal Germans who only raped and executed civilians round up whole villages and burn them in barns as oposed to evil Germans who run network of extermination camps.
@1chuckjones What did the sherman crew do when they were totally crushed by the panther?? they ran away/tried to... you should never doubt the bravery of german soldiers during ww2... they were outstanding, but heavily outnumbered.. Ofcourse i am happy for the allied victory,BUT remember one thing... German soldiers were humans to,that only did what they were ordered to,if they didnt their whole family +++ would be killed etc... think before you talk/type next time!!!
Before you start shedding any tears for the German crew, remember the tank commander who lost his leg died through loss of blood. All the Nazi sympathisers who I suspect were actully born after 1960, never mind living through the war. Remember this, the Nazis were the aggressors in WW". If they had won you wouldn't be writing on YouTube because it wouldn't have existed.
A bunch of fanatical Nazi SS pigs, in a Panther, or the crew of the Sherman, who took on a grossly superior tank, and gave their lives and limbs to rid the world of it's greatest evil?
@skeilak fuck off. who ever said that the guys in that tank were nazis? being a soldier in the german army at that time didnt make you a nazi. the sherman crew didnt 'take on' the panther they were stalked by it meaning the panther took on the sherman. easy prey. you are so fucking ignorant.
soldiers are the same no matter what side they fight on. they fight for the men next to them, nothing more.
Well, my angry little laddie, by 1945, only the SS Panzer units were operating Panthers, Tiger II's, and almost all of the remaining Tiger I's.
Since the SS were not solders, but rather, the armed wing of the Nazi Party, and being a committed Nazi was therefore required; it's pretty darn likely they were Nazis.
Now, who's, "so fucking ignorant"?
Soldiers are most certainly NOT the same, regardless of side they fought on. Especially if they were Nazi SS.
Actually, the SS had several Russian combat units. They deployed them in the Allied Normandy Offensive. (Of course, they shot their Nazi officers, and surrendered, but that's another story.)
And if you can't figure out the difference between a brutal, murdering Nazi, fighting for conquest, and an Allied soldier, fighting in defense of his home, and liberation, than you've got a serious problem, sonny.
Given your obvious Nazi fetish, I'm guessing "JBurner" = "JewBurner"?
@skeilak you took it too far there 'sonny'. I am certainly not a jew hater and i dont like nazis.
i think you got it all wrong from the start... i admire the wehrmacht and its military strength and equipment. i wouldnt be watching these videos if i didnt. i thought your comment was stupid because nobody can judge from this video if the 'landser' of that panther were SS or wehrmacht. and there we are again... you put every german soldier of ww2 into the same box with nazis.
@skeilak have you ever thought that maybe 98% of the entire german military force was most certainly not a 'brutal, murdering nazi'? they were mostly forced to join the army. wehrpflicht ever heard of that? i cannot believe you have such a narrow view point on this situation.
@skeilak your dumb, the waffen ss did get the best equipment, but they did not have it all,the wehrmacht also had tanks till the end of the war, also how can you call the any SS divisions that used kids and foreigners the armed wing of the Nazi political party?,you forget that manpower was very limited at this late stage in the war
@TheJBurner no probs dude,no doubt he will remind me of the typo error i made,i meant to say "many" instead of "any" in my response,so i guess he'll be back with another little rant ;)
Laddie, you could avoid making a fool of yourself, if you bothered to do the research.
In 1945, the SS were the only ones operating Panthers, Tiger II's, and almost all the remaining Tiger I's.
Almost all the SS foreign troops had been captured, surrendered, or deserted, by then. And the SS almost never used children or old men, as they still had plenty of fanatical young men available.
@skeilak you are the only fool here my lad,the nazi divisions got the newest equipment near the end of the war, however panthers were around since mid 1943,the german wehrmacht certainly had its own tanks, the hitler youth divisions existed till the fall of berlin,as did the waffen ss foreign divisions, even british waffen ss troops fought at the battle of berlin, you my sir are an idiot, stick to the comic book versions of WW2 and stop making a laughing stock out of yourself
Any 1943 vintage Panthers were burned-out scrap metal, by 1945. And by 1945, the Heer were almost entirely operating the remaining Panzer IV's, the Jagdpanzer IV's, and Hetzers.
The "British Waffen SS" troops...? What? All six of them?
Sonny, get you head out of Hitler's asshole, and learn some history.
@skeilak you are hillarious, you have not corrected me on any points, first of all i corrected you on the panthers, which were not all later models as you think, then i pointed out the hitler youth were around till the last days, hitler even gave 12 year olds medals in the battle of berlin and i correctly pointed out that foreigners were also included in the waffen ss,if you don't like the fact that i used the brits as an example, then i suggest you look at the wiking ss division
@skeilak i never said i was a supporter of hitler, but for you to call the wehrmacht nazis goes to show me that you are very ignorent of matters concerning WW2
@skeilak it is obvious to me that you are a jew, thats why you call all the germans nazis,i have nothing against jews,i am actually pro-israel,but anti-zionist,however i don't like you labelling all of the germans as nazis, you were being intellectually dishonest,so i pulled you over it,therefore you should thank us all for the free educational lesson
@skeilak you're the racist asshole with a paranoid complex, first you call the tank crew nazis when they were wehrmacht soldiers, then you accuse jburner of being anti-semitic and now you accuse me of the same, stop playing the perpetual victim and grow up,i have better things to do in my life that to educate tubetards
@skeilak yup i have a portrait of my beloved adolf on the mantle piece and a swastika on my ceiling,i have 2 pet dogs,1 is named "anne" and the other i named "frank",you have truely exposed me as a nazi, but i cannot help it as i am part of the master race, happy now? LOL
@skeilak a quick google search will show you that it was the 9th panzer division that engaged the americans in the inner city of Colonge, therefore i rest my case that you are a clueless moron,so kindly put your tin foil hat back on and stick your head back into the microwave
@clovenrick Ahh, I apologize if what I said seemed abit short, I had not read the entire thread. But it would have been very interesting seeing the improved King Tiger, with improved engine and gearing, and the likes of the Panther II vs the T26 and JSII etc. In open battle that is.
@clovenrick Well since the Tiger really did not appear on the East Front till 1943-44 in numbers.. that would be almost normal as the T-34 made up 55% of the tanks on the east front after 1943. So I guess I dont see what the big deal is? There were far fewer Tigers then T-34's. But Im sure the Kill ratio favored the German side?
@clovenrick LOL you are funny. The T-34/85 although had some minor improvements such as pierescope, and a Radio and better gun...although not as lethal as the Panther, nor the Tiger's 88mm. The T-34/85 suffered still with its transmission, exhaust, not to mention it had softer turret armor that even a 37mm AA could penetrate at range. The T-34/85 could be destroyed by all German tanks upon its entering the fray. Again the only thing that saved Russia.. was NUMBERS... not quality.
Just remember as you watch this that those are REAL soldiers, REAL men, whose names you will never know, not some FAKE Hollywood bastardization of history with the likes of Brat Pitt or some other pretty boy actor tryingt to over glamorize themselvs. These men were in this film were the real thing, and they are ALL heroes.
@GhostGodzZillaBO I have to say... that there were what less then 4% in the entire German Country? Could be wrong. But I never go around saying that this was a Nazi tank, Nazi gun, Nazi Plane or Nazi ship.... even though the uniforms beared the "Nazi" Insignia... by NO means does that make a Person, or Thing a Party member. I hate the stereotype. The only way you could tell a Soldaten was part of the Nazi party was the Chevron on his right sleeve of his uniform. Soldiers are soldiers
Mmm i looked it up the germans lost 720 vehicles, the Soviets lost over 6,000... care to try that again ?
The Germans had 184 Tiger 1 tanks at the battle of Kursk.. They lost 18 of them and only 7 became total losses. They were facing 3400 russian tanks, consisting of 270 KV1, 48 Churchill, and mostly t-34's. The Russians lost 501 tanks, which also included 388 pak/flak guns, 79 artillery, and 7 aircraft....
@1ownjoo2 Dont trust the soviet casultie numbers, they still claim they only lost 30.000 men in the winter war. Its russian propaganda to claim so low casulties.
i think that all the first production tanks of all variants and all nations were destroyed by something during the war, so i dont see why ppl make a big deal of the first pershing being destroyed by a tiger, its irrelevant. there were panthers destroyed by shermans and even tigers being imobilised by lucky shots from 6 pounder AT guns.
Is it just me, or does it look like the pictured sherman is NOT mounting a 76mm gun, looks more like a 75mm, correct me if I am wrong, but did not the M4A4 come equipped with the 75mm M3, and the 76mm gun was longer and with a muzzle break at the end.
@Lasarus89 I was referring to the fact that the video (at 1:17) listed it as an M4A4 with a 76mm gun.
Based on other angles, it appears to be a M4A3: 75mm gun, welded hull point to both M4a1 and M4A3, but if you look at ~ 1:33, you can tell from the hull shape and turret that it's a A3.
Great video !!!!! It likes that no ones crews panther died. There was a pershing that was destroyed for a hetzer tank, i dont know it was in cologne or another city, somebody have more information??? Greatfull
Well done Sir! I had never noticed the tracer rounds before. From the interval between the shots it doesn't look like they were fired from an MG (M1919 Browning) A Garand I would guess. Ironically it appears that one of the German crew lost a leg as well........
Little consolation for all the slaughtered Sherman crews. The Yanks and the Germans refered to the Sherman as the ZIPPO (lighter) "Guaranteed to light every time."
@ThugCologne Not totally unexpected after wasting a sherman. The odds of receiving mercy on the battlefield is directly proportional to the damage inflicted. They more damage you do the more likely your going to catch hell even after you are no longer a threat. Just human nature.
to be fair the panther was hit in the side armour where the armour was only about 40mm thick a 57mmm antitank gun could penertrate the panthers side armour but the bottom line is is that the panther could penertrate the m26 pershing at combat ranges likewise the pershing could do the same but the panther had better moblity
thats my fuckin hometown. my grandgrandfather got bombed by american planes wjile he tried to find my garndmother. 5 days before the war ended. he was a civillian and a pacifist. thx america
@schootingstarr I don't think you feel good when someone takes you to be a slave, treats you like a slave and then pays you a thousand of bucks for some years of a hell. And this is not the worst scenario, beleive me. I'd say this was one of the luckiest.
I don't know how much and who must pay for it, just imagine how my granfather felt
@FirebrandB37 because americans never show the truth...always lies...anyway i wanted to ask....how many soldiers does the american government admit of losing in Iraq?
I just watched an interview with the gunner of this very Pershing filmed here. He still 60 years later had guilt about how easily he killed those guys he did in the Panzer. Too bad, So sad....
@SpartiuS94 First Pershing that was defeated, was destroyed by Nashorn actually. And moreover it was not destroyed completely, but military decided to use parts from it for repairing another ones if needed.
Why are the comments in the movie saying "The brave Panther crew"? If the Panther was the better tank, surely the Sherman crew are braver? And given they were in a Panther they were neither "children" or "old men" and were, in fact, most likely SS.
@OtherMeans The panther was the better tank, also better than Pershing thats have a huge cannon but few armor... Brave Panther crew why? Alone tank, they stayed there, likes the last try to defend the town, they surely did it, but at the same time they didnt saw the M26 camoufled, with one 100mm cannon shooted in the side of panther and bye bye... Frontal armor, probably 2 or more shots to defeat, this could give the panter a chance to shoot back, but unfortunatelly this didnt occurred.
@GOLTURBO555 You dont know shit about these tanks. The Pershing's front armor had thickness of 4 inches while the Tiger has 4.7 inches, it doesn't have "few armor". The Pershing used a 90mm cannon not a 100mm cannon. The 90mm had zero trouble penetrating the front armor of the panther. There are a few cases of Tigers withstanding 90mm from ranged fights. Do your fucking research before you post stupid shit.
@jbass350 no. there are other videos of this video, not stopped/stilled, with narration. The panther gunner was cut in half. after the 2nd hit, and the camera shake, look where he was, it's the upper half of his torso. He died on the top of that tank, probably bled out in less than 30-40 seconds.
I like the old projector sound. It reminds me of my class room days when this was the hight of audio-visual tech. This film is pretty grafic for its time. Hope the commander made it home. Thanks for the work.
thank u. sparticus kid is an idiot. if he can do so much better than why doesnt he get off his selfish whining ass and do it himself. whata tool. great video. some people just dont understand that footage like this is almost non existent. i appreciate the post

Just a slight correction. It wasn't '3rd Army' at Cologne. Patton's 3rd Army was way further to the south.
It was the 3rd Armored Division at Cologne and this was part of the US First Army under Courtney Hodges.
Many people mistake the 3rd Armored Division for Patton's 3rd Army.
Just sayin'.

German soldiers were humans to,that only did what they were ordered to,if they didnt their whole family +++ would be killed etc... think before you talk/type next time!!!
ollo1982 3 days ago
Before you start shedding any tears for the German crew, remember the tank commander who lost his leg died through loss of blood. All the Nazi sympathisers who I suspect were actully born after 1960, never mind living through the war. Remember this, the Nazis were the aggressors in WW". If they had won you wouldn't be writing on YouTube because it wouldn't have existed.

Who's "braver"?
A bunch of fanatical Nazi SS pigs, in a Panther, or the crew of the Sherman, who took on a grossly superior tank, and gave their lives and limbs to rid the world of it's greatest evil?
skeilak 2 months ago
@skeilak fuck off. who ever said that the guys in that tank were nazis? being a soldier in the german army at that time didnt make you a nazi. the sherman crew didnt 'take on' the panther they were stalked by it meaning the panther took on the sherman. easy prey. you are so fucking ignorant.
soldiers are the same no matter what side they fight on. they fight for the men next to them, nothing more.
TheJBurner 2 months ago
@TheJBurner
Especially if they were Nazi SS.
skeilak 2 months ago
@skeilak in the last months of the war, the requirements for becoming a ss soldier were almost nill. they would take anyone except jews and russians.
why are soldiers most certainly not the same? they fight for different people thats the only difference.
TheJBurner 2 months ago
@TheJBurner
Given your obvious Nazi fetish, I'm guessing "JBurner" = "JewBurner"?
skeilak 2 months ago
@skeilak you took it too far there 'sonny'. I am certainly not a jew hater and i dont like nazis.
i think you got it all wrong from the start... i admire the wehrmacht and its military strength and equipment. i wouldnt be watching these videos if i didnt. i thought your comment was stupid because nobody can judge from this video if the 'landser' of that panther were SS or wehrmacht. and there we are again... you put every german soldier of ww2 into the same box with nazis.
TheJBurner 2 months ago
@skeilak have you ever thought that maybe 98% of the entire german military force was most certainly not a 'brutal, murdering nazi'? they were mostly forced to join the army. wehrpflicht ever heard of that? i cannot believe you have such a narrow view point on this situation.
TheJBurner 2 months ago
@TheJBurner i correct myself: 99% of the military force.
TheJBurner 2 months ago
@TheJBurner
I'm sorry, "JewBurner", but to whom did all those poor innocent little non-mass-murdering German troops pledge their allegiance to?
Was it the Nazi Party, and Adolf Hitler, personally?
skeilak 2 months ago
@skeilak your dumb, the waffen ss did get the best equipment, but they did not have it all,the wehrmacht also had tanks till the end of the war, also how can you call the any SS divisions that used kids and foreigners the armed wing of the Nazi political party?,you forget that manpower was very limited at this late stage in the war

IRISHINFIDEL 2 months ago
@IRISHINFIDEL
PS: I think you meant, "You're dumb..." *L*
skeilak 2 months ago
@skeilak you are the only fool here my lad,the nazi divisions got the newest equipment near the end of the war, however panthers were around since mid 1943,the german wehrmacht certainly had its own tanks, the hitler youth divisions existed till the fall of berlin,as did the waffen ss foreign divisions, even british waffen ss troops fought at the battle of berlin, you my sir are an idiot, stick to the comic book versions of WW2 and stop making a laughing stock out of yourself
IRISHINFIDEL 2 months ago
@IRISHINFIDEL
You're very amusing. (Though pathetic.)
Sonny, get you head out of Hitler's asshole, and learn some history.
skeilak 2 months ago
@skeilak you are hillarious, you have not corrected me on any points, first of all i corrected you on the panthers, which were not all later models as you think, then i pointed out the hitler youth were around till the last days, hitler even gave 12 year olds medals in the battle of berlin and i correctly pointed out that foreigners were also included in the waffen ss,if you don't like the fact that i used the brits as an example, then i suggest you look at the wiking ss division

Panther I was the best tank on battlefield in 2nd world war ;)

PhonierDeluxe 2 months ago
@clovenrick Ahh, I apologize if what I said seemed abit short, I had not read the entire thread. But it would have been very interesting seeing the improved King Tiger, with improved engine and gearing, and the likes of the Panther II vs the T26 and JSII etc. In open battle that is.
JuergenGDB 3 months ago
@clovenrick Well since the Tiger really did not appear on the East Front till 1943-44 in numbers.. that would be almost normal as the T-34 made up 55% of the tanks on the east front after 1943. So I guess I dont see what the big deal is? There were far fewer Tigers then T-34's. But Im sure the Kill ratio favored the German side?
JuergenGDB 3 months ago
@clovenrick LOL you are funny. The T-34/85 although had some minor improvements such as pierescope, and a Radio and better gun...although not as lethal as the Panther, nor the Tiger's 88mm. The T-34/85 suffered still with its transmission, exhaust, not to mention it had softer turret armor that even a 37mm AA could penetrate at range. The T-34/85 could be destroyed by all German tanks upon its entering the fray. Again the only thing that saved Russia.. was NUMBERS... not quality.
JuergenGDB 3 months ago
Just remember as you watch this that those are REAL soldiers, REAL men, whose names you will never know, not some FAKE Hollywood bastardization of history with the likes of Brat Pitt or some other pretty boy actor tryingt to over glamorize themselvs. These men were in this film were the real thing, and they are ALL heroes.

Is it just me, or does it look like the pictured sherman is NOT mounting a 76mm gun, looks more like a 75mm, correct me if I am wrong, but did not the M4A4 come equipped with the 75mm M3, and the 76mm gun was longer and with a muzzle break at the end.
Rmurphy227 4 months ago
@Rmurphy227 the m4a4 was never used in europe by us amy, that must be an m4 or a m4a3
Lasarus89 4 months ago
@Lasarus89 I was referring to the fact that the video (at 1:17) listed it as an M4A4 with a 76mm gun.
Based on other angles, it appears to be a M4A3: 75mm gun, welded hull point to both M4a1 and M4A3, but if you look at ~ 1:33, you can tell from the hull shape and turret that it's a A3.

The Yanks and the Germans refered to the Sherman as the ZIPPO (lighter) "Guaranteed to light every time."

compensating for everything what a group of mad men did?
if so, why should only germany pay up for what happened in the past?
there were so many wars, so many cruelties, and only a small, barely non-existing part was ever paid back
there is no way to excuse the crimes the nazis commited, but you cannot expect germany to forever pay for what happened.

Why are the comments in the movie saying "The brave Panther crew"? If the Panther was the better tank, surely the Sherman crew are braver? And given they were in a Panther they were neither "children" or "old men" and were, in fact, most likely SS.
OtherMeans 11 months ago
@OtherMeans The panther was the better tank, also better than Pershing thats have a huge cannon but few armor... Brave Panther crew why? Alone tank, they stayed there, likes the last try to defend the town, they surely did it, but at the same time they didnt saw the M26 camoufled, with one 100mm cannon shooted in the side of panther and bye bye... Frontal armor, probably 2 or more shots to defeat, this could give the panter a chance to shoot back, but unfortunatelly this didnt occurred.
GOLTURBO555 10 months ago
@GOLTURBO555 You dont know shit about these tanks. The Pershing's front armor had thickness of 4 inches while the Tiger has 4.7 inches, it doesn't have "few armor". The Pershing used a 90mm cannon not a 100mm cannon. The 90mm had zero trouble penetrating the front armor of the panther. There are a few cases of Tigers withstanding 90mm from ranged fights. Do your fucking research before you post stupid shit.

jbass350 11 months ago
@jbass350 no. there are other videos of this video, not stopped/stilled, with narration. The panther gunner was cut in half. after the 2nd hit, and the camera shake, look where he was, it's the upper half of his torso. He died on the top of that tank, probably bled out in less than 30-40 seconds.
