Go to Truthcontest(dot)com and read The Present (with religion). It says that the life in hydrothermal vents is the bottom of the evolutionary ladder, hell on earth.
Once again, scientists, thinking they know everything, are caught with their pants down. When science tells us they know something, later on we find they didn't know, after all. But up until some surprise discovery, they puff out their chests and tell us how they are experts. Then like Ballard, they play the modest, gosh golly, self-effacing scientists. For a while. Then they become self-important experts again.
By 2100, 80% of what are now big picture "facts" will be proven wrong.
The late Thomas Gold wrote a book "The Deep Hot Biosphere." In it he posited, like Ballard, that life began deep. Where Ballard thinks it was at the vents. Gold argues it is deep within all of the Earth's crust. Time will tell. They both think life began other than on the surface.
