Remember, this was made the same year man first walked on the moon. Space travel was new. It was dangerous, experimental and had the nation & the world enthralled. Those of us that were alive watched the whole spectacle on our black & white TVs. The astronauts knew that they could easily die when they got strapped in before lift off. Numerous unmanned attempts crashed and burned up. The NASA astronauts were all-American heros and our hearts were with them on each mission.
thanks for the post i love david bowie he is one of the men who made are lifes what they are today well mine anyways his songs and life has pushed us on and on to allways better are selfs
Hahahahahahahaha. Whoever said that only you oldies can appreciate art. I'm a '90s baby and I still know a beautiful song when I hear one. I just think it's a gift to be able to see the beauty of more than one genre. Sure, this song might be glorious in its own right, but being able to appreciate everything is such a large part of living wholly.
I like this better than the radio drop, it erudes from an era just passing; and the ushers who would bring forth the new, hoping to clear the jackals thrashing at the after-birth.
@primospartan -I always interpreted the line to be a reference to either the name brand of Major Tom's shirt or perhaps to some wise words printed on a t-shirt.
There is no way he could have known how prolific this song was whenever he sat down to write it. Actual people from the future still listen to this song. It's just amazing.
@sarakimble This is a music promotional film, long before the videotaped glossiness most are accoustomed to from being overly used to what MTV turned the Music promotional film into the music video, same idea but two different creatures. I was born just before MTV hit the airwaves so I'm very used to these 60's promos and love that new ones are unearthed all the time. I still swear there was a promo for the Who's whiskey man but I may be confused because I last saw what I think I did at 5
@moxie96 I'm in your age group. I was born in '59. I saw a lot of these on Ed Sullivan back in the day. He would announce a certain artist or group to be on the show, then he would just show a film of them quite like this one. I think they made it easier for the variety shows to use pre-produced films rather than go through the logistics of having them perform in the studio.
He has the most PERFECTLY shaped English nose. lolll I know that sounds weird, but my exhusband was 100% "english" blah blah genealogy" and his nose was EXACTLY like that; and my son's too; not like mine at all. So beautiful; just like this song. It's so funny; later I went to Sweden and now I can even understand a Swedish nose when I see it ;D I LOVE IT !!!!! Beauty -- ethnicity -- family ;-) <3 Thank you world.
I'm Brazilian 20 years and love songs 50's 60's 70's 80's 90's and now no one has more good songs than just U2 still amazing. I love the English language I love David Bowie.
I read somewhere that David Bowie was wearing a wig when he filmed this. It said he shaved his head for an audition for a role in a movie. You know if that was the case then it would have been cool if he would have worn different wigs when being Major Tom and Ground Control. I know it’s too late now, lol, but I just think it would have been cool.
it must have inspired "Moon" - directed by Bowie's son... where Sam Bell looks at himself lying on the operating bed in the space station... Moon could have been a remake...
I've read all the comments posted..."please" just realize how fortunate we are that we have the oppotunity to revisit the past, and someone has taken the time to make sure we can. Always be positive! A positive intention makes our future positive.
oh my gosh.... the hair... the hair..... bowie reminds me of Luke Skywalker in a New Hope. And the girls are hideous too... lol, this almost makes me pine for the later one he did with the Ziggy hairdo.
