Thank you for the wonderful demonstration. I have been struggling trimming large porcelain bowls. I find hairline cracks in the rims after i have trimmed them. I do tend to leave a lot of weight in the bottom as I like a tall foot. Could I be leaving too much weight for the rim to take? Thank you for the idea of getting help to flip the bats with the bowl inside. I don't generally do that because have trouble flipping my plaster bats.
@meredithpottery Hi! As you are probably very aware porcelain clay bodies are quite different from "ordinary" pottery clay. You are probably on the right track when you suspect you might be asking the rim to support too much weight as the bowl is set upside down. One method of handling the bowl for trimming would be to use a bisque "chuck" to support the bowl from the inside so the weight is not on the rim. Throw and bisque fire a cylinder taller than the depth of your bowl from pottery clay.
I was wondering how many pounds of clay that was, and also, how do you glaze something that wide? Very wide glaze buckets? Your website only shows dipping small pots, and even that tub looks to small to get in something as large as this bowl or the large platter. Thanks for the great and helpful vids!
We don't pay too much attention to weight for the demo pieces so we are not sure. Enough to throw a bowl that big?! We use 50 gallon garbage cans for glazing and have extra large tongs which were custom made for us.
