I absolutly agree with Neil Tennant. We have the same kind of talent show in Germany as they are spreading all around the world. And it's the same concept everywhere. It seems they are just waiting for some immature characters to make fools out of themselves. I have read about that Simon Cowell. He has no clue about music, he is a pure businessman
I'm really glad to see that serious pop musicians dissociate themselves from that dishonest , unworthy crap.
most people do not watch thing like Xfactor to see talent they watch it to see all the oddball in the early weeks then to see the ones in the finals crash and burn live on tv
This is why I love Neil Tennant- he simply calls it like he sees it, and all the quips and comments I've heard from him, I always seem to agree with (and it's not just because it's him saying them). Neil's got class, experience, and talent. And Simon has....? Loads of money and a snotty streak as long as a freight train. I wonder if Simon was who Chris Lowe was thinking of when he said [or something very close to] "Stupidity and arrogance can take you a long way."
Those who can't do, teach and crticize. I can hit a high G2 at 57db but in front of that control freak which reminds me of my ex- voice teacher I would probably freeze too! I like to see him sing IN FRONT OF ME and i'll get the last LAUGH.
Its because Simon Cowell is ephemera; and "Neil Francis Tennant" aka Pet Shop Boys is eternity. We may find Cowell's sniggers and ridicule engaging for the time being, but its Neil's beatiful pop to which we shall sing and tweet on for years to come.
Cowell wouldn't know decent pop music if it bit him on the arse. iansithlord said it perfectly - all he (Cowell) and the other two shop dummies are are barely glorified talent scouts for faceless music companies who are in the business of pumping out artless flavours of the month month after month. Cheap, meaningless, smutty shit. What is sadder than the stuff Neil talks about is that the kids lap it up and actually *aspire* to be these shallow, untalented karaoke singers.
all the imagination in music has been pushed out because they dont fit some pre-concieved notion of what a pop star is to be...look at the stones..look at the who..those guys are not pretty but they ruled the world for a while
I feel like Neil Tennant is a voice of wisdom from a bygone era in this interview, & it's really sad to contemplate how far music industry standards have nose-dived over the past decade or so:-(
"Pop music's not about humiliation" says Neil Tennant, and he's right... only I'm not sure that the show 'The X Factor' is principally about pop music.
I love the PSB and have been listening to them for the past 30 years but can't say I totally agree with Neil on this one. Maybe pop "shouldn't" be about humilitaion but meanwhile it doesn't mean pop never evolves. Pop, like any contemporary music, reflects what's happening in the world now and the fact is the world is a mess so it's only natural that such negativity shows in pop and the culture surrounding it.
Yeah, you are so right! Now I keep yelling at everyone I see in a wheelchair to get up and not be so f-ing lazy! I can´t stop myself after watching Little Britains documentary... :D

Neil Tennant has "good reason". AND KNOWLEDGE. IS A MASTER OF MUSIC.
THE "pop music", IS TO LISTEN, ENJOY, LEARN FROM IT.
Is in the soul!.
But it is not to mock, or ridicule people.
It is unfortunate that this program, are rooted, the ridicule of people and destroy their dream, the end.
WHY TO SAY? : "Best practices", "Maybe another time." And not offend, WITH WORDS HURT, YOUR EXPECTATIONS..
