  • Teacher: What is the difference between Windows and Linux?

Me: Windows are for GAMING!! xD

  • é parecido com o ubuntu , gostei de visual

  • anyone know how can i change a windows drive letter in Fedora?

  • It takes 1.2 minutes to open in

  • Correct me if i am wrong but this OS seems very slow...also i have to add that the best OS out there is Mac. This is a fact. But Windows is an OS for gamers (like me) it supports all games and all programms and as a student i must admit that sometimes it is reeeaaally dumb.

  • @MrDescending i think that fedora system is run on a very slow environment(e.g., virtualbox)

if mac is run on a slow environment, it gets unbearably slow. i have the latest release of fedora on my desktop, and it is amazingly fast.

  • @TripleRhu you are right about mac osx... i have had it run in virtualbox (v.10.4.11 w/ 1.5 gb of ram allocated{intel version}) and then ran it on my pentium IV with 512 megs allocated and it was amazingly fast

(the virtualbox was on a core 2 extreme 4 cores{ht}, 3.2 ghz)(p. IV was 1.8 ghz, single core)

  • This looks just like Ubuntu but I'm looking for an alternative; What are some of the things that make Fedora stand out over other distros?

  • How dos this run on 256 MB of ram with 1ghz CPU?

  • For low ram pc's use LXDE. I think for Fedora you'll have to do it yourself so you might want to just download Linux Mint LXDE or TinyCore or WattOS or many others. But if you download a lot of programs its simpler to stick with a popular distro

  • ubuntu seems pretty much the same. but of course, ubuntu uses gnome

  • 99% kubuntu inside

  • i use ubuntu 10.10 and i can't spot any differences to this .

  • Ive heard some people cant get it on there computer why is this

  • i've never heard of fedora 12 before, and i'm having doubts about it.Anyone care to share what are the perks of using fedora 12?

  • my win 7 load in 17 sec

  • @wesleysidney my ubuntu load in 8 sec :D

  • @TheIsaacrevelo almoust umbeliveable, gratz

  • @wesleysidney but i dont get viruses haha!

  • 45% video time = Booting & Loading an empty OS :|....

  • the first thing i do when i install fedora or ubuntu or any other distro is change the fonts, tahoma # 9 , the default fonts sucks are are waaaay to big, sometimes feels like iam watching an 800x600 desktop.

if you want to play PC games on linux, you need to buy cedega or crossover, i think they charge about $30 , but you dont need to renew your subscription unless you plan to keep installing new games year after year

cedega enables you to play all windows games, also adobePro,office2007 , etc

  • The first thing to figure out when you first get Fedora is...how to get videos to work on youtube. Fedora's stubborn about no proprietary stuff, and Adobe thinks it the mafia.

  • @lep1950 yes it is not the best choice for newbies, better use ubumtu, i like kubuntu more, becouse i like kde, and new kdes are verry good, i started using linux as main os with a distro named Mandrak linux, but it closed and now i uses windows 7 and stil using fedora just for mantain the door opened.

  • I'm new to Linux and are reading and studying a lot about it. I was wondering why Fedora Looks EXACTLY like Ubuntu but with a different preset wallpaper? , I'm confused on the benefits of Fedora over Ubuntu or vice versa.

  • @djkoziiqn I dont really know anything about fedora, but they probably look the sameway because they are both using GNOME for the desktop enviroment.

  • What app do you use to capture this kind of video on linux?

  • nice video, muy buen video, gracias!

  • are you shitting me whats next Dress 12?!?!? these names are very weird and Linux and windows And also MAC like I want a mac i said at mcdonolds and they said we dont got a computer for you to eat and i was like FUCK!

  • Is there any possibility to change the menu layout? i really, REALLY hate the application, places, system thing. i'd prefer it to be like the menu in mint linux. i like fedora but the menu is annoying...

  • @Aerial29 I believe a new community edition just came out with the mint menu ported to fedora, check it out ;)

  • @iguanae i tried that and during the live CD, several crashes occurred... one being that i could no longer see what programs were minimized on the panels...

  • Hmm and..What OS is better Ubuntu? or Fedora?

  • I'm 13 years old and have used Windows 98 through windows 7 switched to ubuntu 9.10 last year then bought a new computer used windows 7 for a while then removed windows for ubuntu 10.04 dual booted it with fedora 12 and backtrack 3 i love linux and windows sucks when you think about it getting a virus on a linux distro is nearly impossible unless you're very stupid osx is nice but too simple for me..... My biggest question is what's your favorite linux OS?

  • @w0Rm210

i started with red hat, quickly switched to opensuse, for a long time opensuse was my favourite choice until kde 4 came out, then i started experimenting with a bunch of distros. my favourite for the desktop at the moment is ubuntu.. i'm using kubuntu at the moment, but i love gnome aswell. sabayon is nice aswell, but asks a steep learning curve. linuxmint is not that bad either, well actually its quite good ;)

  • I using a Virtual Hard Drive but it doesn´t start...

  • Seriously, that's pretty much the slowest boot I've seen on ANY OS. Is that the norm for Fedora? If so, I'll definitely scratch that distro off my list :-/

  • @EntropyMonster I havent used this one yet.. I'm still new at fedora.. but I got Fedora 8 and it boots pretty fast.... than the second fast is my Mac OSX leopard and third is windows...

  • I use Fedora and I'm very comfortable with it. It is harder to use for beginners, but once you are accustomed to it, everything is easy.

  • Fedora looks awesome!!!

  • Haha, it's the old crappy Linux system ! Retardora ! :D:D:D

  • Just installed fedora 12 again.. This OS is not for beginers... This OS is great but it is likely to have bugs. This is bleeding edge... Works great but was not designed to be easy peasy... Ubuntu 10.04 is good and is easy. Ubuntu is great if you are switching from windows. Windows 7 is good, best windows i've used.. But linux is always gonna be my favourite... Fedora feels good and ubuntu feels okay but they are both great as each other. Quick sometimes to boot and slow others.. Think Linux..

  • Been using linux since 94, but I installed 12 on my laptop and it was really unstable. the package manager showed updates, so i updated and it broke during process. I tried less and less packages in the possibility that maybe i had too many updates selected...but no matter what it kept crashing. in comparison with other distros, it still feels very fragile and not as snappy, like ubuntu is.

  • To be honest - I really don't like Fedora, its so different to any of the other distros, I don't know why. I don't like it but its great for customizing!

  • Looks like the boot still takes about 5 years

  • Looks like ubuntu :P Ubuntu is better

  • looks kinda ghetto... im a stick to windows 7... plus its a bit faster than vista ..so its good

  • Looks like a breed of Red Hat Linux and Ubuntu. The Red Hat part of it would be kinda obvious though because Fedora is owned by and based upon Red Hat.

  • gnome looks like gnome has nothing to do with the os.

  • @Snaretare Yeah, LXDE would have been nicer to use, (Of course, themed)

  • lol hate to say it but to me it looks kinda like ubuntu just blue instead of that annoying orange color

  • since both using gnome.... =_=

  • GOOD OS, but veyr demanding in hardware not good if you plan to install linux on older hardware for server uses....

  • i like the fuckin loadin bar

  • I'm thinking about getting this will this work with a Integrated: VIA/S3G Unichrome PRO IGP, Graphics K8M800 Chipset? Please reply :)

  • It will work with that, although you should probably get Ubuntu if your looking to get linux, its probably the best distribution of Linux out there!

  • I tried ubuntu but it wouldn't let me get my graphics card out of low acceleration mode.

  • i still go with windows.. compatibility is such a big issue

  • i am very much a windows man (pays my wages), but for a free OS, when all u do is browse the web or do some basic office docs, this is great. got it runnin on an old crappy laptop which struggled even with XP, and its fine.

  • actually after using windows xp for years, vista for 1 year, and win7 for a while, I switched to fedora linux and never turned back. Once you learn how an OS is supposed to work it is a more than equivelant replacement for windows. I game on it, do school work better than every with open office, program with netbeans and c::b. After having to work with windows again at school on their computers, and vista on a clients computer (I build computers). I don't know how i ever settled for windows.

  • settled for windows to play 'high-end' games

  • You should take a look at CodeBlocks for c++

  • I think you damn right! I have tried Ubuntu on my Ibm thinkpad T60. But the fan never went off.

I think I have a CD with Fedora on. Should a give Linux a change again?

But what could be the best OS for me and my computer?

  • @Imprezaman555

no doubt! between using fedora 11 and opensuse 11.2 w/compiz

using windows is like a step backwards.

  • I actually just got an acer aspire one mini thst came with windows seven and it was a huge case of dejavu. It is exactly the same as vista, maybe slightly faster and it does have a slightly redisigned (i mean copied from gnome and kde) gui but still. Not any decently sized step foreward. Also now that i replaced it with f12, it runs really fast, extremely impressive for an atom and 1 gig of ram (although f12 only uses 180mb of it idle, and never surpasses 500). Also everything wrx outa the box.

  • @Imprezaman555 dude compaired to windows fedora 12 is good but as far as ubuntu goes its shity i will give 5 out of 10 to fedora 12 compaired to ubuntu.

  • @Imprezaman555 Really? I'm currently on fedora right now since my xp crapped out on me. I can't decide if i should stick with it or go back to xp.

  • @damthatriver09 give it a chance, learn a little about how it works and customizing it. If you really wanna have fun with an OS try building gentoo, you can do anything and everything with it, but u gotta know quite a bit bout what ur doing to get the most out of it.

  • @Imprezaman555 After a day messing with it, I learned that fedora makes me more productive as a person. As strange as it sounds, I think I'm already in love with it! however, I couldn't get quake 3 to install =/.

  • @damthatriver09 I know exactly how you feel, but that is weird with quake. Are you installing from rpm or yum? If im not mistaken you might need an extra file to get it to work properly, something they put in so you have to buy it. I never really tried straight up quake. One thing though, you may want to try nexuiz (now xonotic), its based on quake but heavily modded, even the engine. If not Tremulous is also quake based but its harder to learn to play, more strategy.

  • @Imprezaman555 I researched on both the games you mentioned and I must say, they look fantastic. It's too bad though I won't be gaming since I just found out fedora hasn't released 3D acceleration support for ATI radeon graphics card.

  • @Imprezaman555 i urge you to give Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Linux Mint a try. I don't want to force anything on you, but you'd seriously have a better time with Debian package system rather than Red Hat.

  • @j800r been there done that. It was my first distro, but aptitude was very limited compared to yum, from the command line at least, and that is what I prefer. Im thinking of giving arch a try, pacman seams like it works well form the command line as well. Either way it works well for me thanks anyway though.

  • @Imprezaman555 then don't use aptitude. use apt-get when in terminal. and tbh, most things can be done with the GUI anyway.

  • @j800r what do you think the apt in apt-get stands for :P! But anyhow yum works very well for me, not that it doesn't have flaws although I wont talk about them all here, but still is the best one I have used so far, namely rpm and apt. Like I said though I will be trying pacman soon in arch, it seems even better than yum.

  • @Imprezaman555 really? what "gaming" do you do on linux? latest version of HALO? Or COD? I thought not. Other than that BS, I agree. Don't pretend it's better than it is. Have you tried Ubuntu or other distros? What hooked you on fedora?

  • @kenfo0 I got hooked on fedora simply through a pretty natural cycle of finding something better. I started with suse, then mint, then ubuntu then fedora. Each one worked better (for me) than the last. Specifically I like yum more than apt (as said before). Also it seems to run faster, specifically it responds faster. Also it just has a really nice feel to it, but maybe that's just the touch pad being better than on the last computer.

  • @kenfo0 as for the gaming issue, I have played halo and cod with friends and didn't like them as much as some alternatives for linux. If you don't, don't. Because I am not interested in them I dont know much about it but you can apparently get them running in wine (with some skill and patience)

  • @Imprezaman555 why people keep bragging how they dumped the windows and switch to Linux, it really doesn't make you more special then everyone else just because you use os the that hackers used in movies . i know you can get alots of apps for free on Linux, but they can't bet the apps for mac and pc. i know how people like to make fun of vista's problems, the only reason they have problem, just because their system sucks, that's why they switch to Linux to handle it better.

  • @PajamaSnake no, just no. Im not even gonna reply to that there are too many things wrong with it. If you can't have fun with linux then just don't, but don't hate on me. My computer runs wista and even 7 very fast, in movies hackers use macs and PCs generally, All my apps run great and fast, I get updates often, and are very functional. Then when I want to make something, I can use the very well proven code that I have already been using day to day to make whatever I want and can.

  • @Imprezaman555

and all your drivers work because i wanna put linux on my laptop.

  • @TerrorAapie if you have the same one as me then yes. I have the aspire one mini nav-50 (the new one) and everything works aside from the card reader. I run fedora 12 64 bit. The only other thing is that I can't seem to get multitouch working with this touchpad.

  • @Imprezaman555 what do you play under linux? battlefield 2? how much pain did it takes you to make it work? 10hours? 20hours? what's your config? exept working with programs like openoffice or programming with python or things you can't do anything. if you want to play any pc games the only real os working now is windows because of everything is made for it. some little games comes out for mac too thanks to steam for that even if i hate mac even more than microsoft

  • @sigurd83 Its called playonlinux. in conjuction with wine you can install a plethora of PC games to work perfectly. Takes about 15 min to download and install PlayOn and Wine. Then just regular game install time after that. I have Steam on my Lucid Lynx, with portal, Mass Effect 1,2, Oblivion, etc. PlayOn also install many other PC only programs.

  • @Rebootrevival Can you explain how it works in practice? - do you have a virtual Windows boot, or do you simply have a shortcut on the desktop which loads the game directly? I want to use linux, but i'm stuck on some Windows programs that needs to be installed on a Windows machine. I would love to try something other, as it seems Linux is user-friendly enough for life-time windows users like me. PM me if possible, thx.

  • @sigurd83 Is not all about games you puppet

  • @Imprezaman555 how the fuck do you game on it ?

  • @RazvanNL I personally play sauerbraten and tremulous, they are very fun if they r ur style. It really depends on ur preference though, and i'm no hardcore gamer, just in a few hours of free time (more like 1 hour usually).xonotic/nexuiz is also very good by the looks of it but nvr got to playing it except on my laptop (and intel gma500 gfx ruined it)

  • just as virus!

  • Sweet, it stands between this, Ubuntu and OpenSuse.

    ...

And Windows is history. Sux! Totally!

  • is this related to YDL? that works on PS3

  • Why don't you edit these videos somewhat? We know boot times and stuff is going to be diffrent on various computers.

  • This is a vbox runnig, for this reason booting proccess is a little slow

  • booting is slow but it still boot. Unlike my vista.... Vista is why i move to fedora.....

(Note) if you are using window and are 99% of the population that don't have the install disc... You are srew in the ass... because vista is a magnet to virus and can damage your system like mine... they gave you the option of recovery disc but it's like shit...

i am a window user....but window is a fu/ckin money sucker so.... yea free is better. always

  • good point!!!

  • Almost 2 min until you can use your desktop :S pathetic

  • @nihlabs you suck :)

  • Of course I suck, I'm talking about how this linux sucks... but when Windows takes exactly the same time OR LESS... OMG IT F### SUCKS!! Sure... idiots.

  • Windows=shit, 1 year ago I had the stupid idea of installing windows vista...well, I don`t want to remember it, WV made my computer going slow. No matter what people say, open source is better because you can create all what you need. Windows is so problematic and very very limited...

  • Windows 7 is alot better than Vista, you should try it

  • It is indeed!

  • It is better, especially in the sense that it doesn't hog your resources, AND that it can be run on computer's which are dated.

However, Linux still takes cake. Why? Because I said.

  • i wont say that because 96% of the program nowadays are ported to windows.

  • @xXDWFXx

No, he can log in with his name, if you're on a live cd you can't log in.

  • The look and feel between ubuntu and fedora are the same, i'm downloading OpenSuse to know how that looks.

  • Fedora is simple one of the fastest distros(i686 optimized including 99% of all of its programs) around, way more faster than mr ubuntu, which uses a generic kernel and all of its programs are i386 ( genius) LMAO

i dont know what the hell is so good about ubuntu ,its all hype and dog slow.

seriously ubuntu should be in 5th place on distrowatch. archlinux , slackware, fedora ,and opensuse should be the first four

  • I should try this, always used Ubuntu... Perhaps I should try OpenSuse too...

  • Doesnt stands against Ubuntu 9.10

  • They both use gnome....

I'm interested in the redhat (RHEL) virtualisation software...It's gotta work better that VMware in ubuntu 9.10.

Tried fedora 11 liked it, but went back to ubuntu because i couldn't exit to a text session to install CUDA driver....I like the system encyprtion feature in fedora 11 and the boot time... Probably gonna go for RHEL multi os for next OS...

  • so happy they showed us how to open a window

  • looks like slow os, why?

  • Ubuntu is no easier than Fedora. I've used both. They are both good distros. I use Fedora because its the upstream of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Meaning if you work in IT and work with Red Hat or CentOS, Fedora is going to provide a better background in the understanding of those products. Regarding a desktop. Either one is on par with the other. Dont let people tell you one is easier than the other because its simply not true.

  • true dat. i found fedora easier myself. ubuntu has too many bugs (except for hardy) like flash, sound, framerates, they dont try to solve problems that are most noticable.

  • looks like Ubuntu indeed, except it uses RPM packaging, still a good distro.

  • @frostycurrent. I recommend that you use either ubuntu or mint as they are both good distros for linux beginners.

  • @frostycurrent <<< if you want to install Linux OS on your machine. i recommend you to search first for any related problem about your machine. because i had problem when i installed ubuntu on my laptop [old model].

  • Also, what desktop enviroment do you guys recommend? KDE or GNOME?

  • Grostycyrrent,

Personally, I recommend Gnome. I find the interface a lot cleaner. There might be some technical advantages to KDE that I'm not aware of, but Gnome seems to be preferred by many. Linux Format's podcasters just said that if Linux ever wants to take off on the Deasktop, Gnome has to become the de facto standard. I guess that's an endorsement.

  • I may remove Windows Vista off my laptop and I was thinking about installing Linux on it. What Linux distribution do you guys recommend? I was thinking about Ubuntu, Fedora, or Suse.

  • @frostycurrent i recommend Ubuntu

  • Linux Mint is pretty good as well.

  • Ubuntu is good, but you could also try Fedora or OpenSUSE. The first two use GNOME, OpenSUSE uses KDE. You could also try Linux Mint; that's Gnome, but it looks pretty differnet from the standard Gnome install. Mint also comes with multimedia playback of flash and many other formats supported right off the bat.

  • not opensuse, its waaaayyy tooo limited.

  • It looks way to much like ubuntu, is that a gnome desktop?

  • yes

  • Comment removed

  • Im puzzled why your Splash sequence (the continuously filling blue bars at the start) looks as the Fedora 10 one...Mine is the Fedora logo filling up of white color.

  • Well never used Fedora before , and i thought this was ubuntu cause i see lot's of similar applications that both distros uses are the same, witch is a good thing too see because it wont be so hard to google for any help or support you might need of any of these preinstalled applications.

Glad to see more & more pleople on Linux ...

Go Linux !!! Cause you worth it ...

  • ok, i am 15 and i have been using linux for a while now, i learned how to program with perl but what i dont get is why there is so many different flavors of linux, visual wise, fedora and ubuntu look identical, can someone please explain this, thanks

  • different linux distributions use different package managers. For example Debian and Ubuntu use synaptic, Arch Linux uses pacman, Gentoo Linux uses Portage, etc. Those different package managers have their own features for example Gentoo's Portage builds packages from their sources everytime they are being installed.

you can read about "linux distribution" on wikipedia for more information.

  • thank you i will

  • Everyone has different goals, and every company backs different things.

Fedora for example wants the best security technologies and the latest innovations.

Ubuntu was popularised due to Debian's relaxed pace of development which favoured quality over timing. Ubuntu provides 6 month cycles.

Now, they both look the same because they use the same desktop environment (GNOME) and they base their setups off of the same array of software (but with different versions/patches).

  • I'm running fendora and it's good :)

  • hey guys theirs a couple problem in fedora 12

    1.nvidia drivers compatibility

    2.could not install mp3 codec

but it also has some merits also

1.now kde developer's has an embedded konsole to compile as on rhel 5

2.fedora 12 is much faster than fedora 11

but the bugs are still needed to be fixed

and also i could not install adobe flash player over fedora 12

  • 1. You should install with basic gpu drivers. I have problems with look-up when I try to run it, my Fedora was goind to 2 min loop ...

    2. After install dl drivers for your graphics card from official site, than:

    a)/sbin/init 3

    b)sh yourdriversfile.run

    c)reboot

  • @OlbiPL

    thanks man

but i had done this before you posted the comment and succeeded

  • [drm : drm-mod-rmvb] error tried to remove afb thatwe didnot own boot has failed

    sleeping for ever

    help me plz

  • its a shame how long fedora takes for booting. i like its philosophy a lot, but its simply to slow for me. this is why i use arch.

  • Holy crap the first minute and a half were spent logging on, I hope this was recorded from a virtual machine or something.

  • The first 1 minute and 23 seconds was the machine booting. From the time he got the login prompt to being able to work was about 23 seconds (including time to type in his password).

  • I dont know. Im kinda happy with Ubuntu 9.10 :) but I might do it

  • Cool. alot like Ubuntu - I think the Fedora 12 cursor is quite nice

    5/5

  • Fedora looks a lot better on Gnome than in KDE. You think you might give this a go UbuntuHelpGuy?
