this is a system called ant-lag, its purpose is to squirt an extra amount of fuel at the engine to keep the turbo spooling, and that results in some quantities of uncombusted fuel running to the hot exhaust, where, it ignites resulting in flames coming from the exhaust.

@wez1to2 a vehicle back fires when its running to lean and its letting too much petrole threw and it basicly gets ignited in the exhoust as it leaves it fucks with your engine and ruins your exhoust becouse blows all the packing out of the muffler and on straight cut pipes it makes the end split open like a trumpet (hence called trumpeting)

I just know because in my 05 sti I can rev it all day and the boost gauge wont move. My turbo is quite loud after the resonator delete and SR intake i installed, and i can't hear it either when not in gear. Its probably less about a direct mechanical correlation between the turbo with tranny, and more of an ecu thing as far as i kno..

@failchawi acctualy, the turbo does spin..what really happens is that when u are not in gear, the engine needs veeery little fuel to "turn" itself..and of course this "very little" explosion also isnt enough to get the turbo up to pressure speeds..but that doesnt mean the turbo isnt rotating, it is rotating, its just not making considerable amount of pressure..it has nothing to do with the gears, neithe ecu or mech...its just that the engine spins itself with a lot less fuel then to pull the car

@Driftuner Yes actually i was wrong, i checked it again in my car today, i let it rev on neutral but all the gauge did was go from vacuum to 0 psi and stayed on 0 psi till i eased off the throttle.. I know that means the turbo is working. And also i sort of realized given the mechanics, the turbo would have no choice but to work if the engine is revving.. My bad..

@zVlPERz when you rev the piss out of a turbo car like that and get the turbo hot and then shut it off, the turbo is still hot as hell without the oil flowing through it. That's been known to shorten the life of your turbo, that's one of the reasons people use turbo timers.

The engine does have to remain running to cool down an oil-cooled turbo though, which is why yes you would need a turbo timer, but in this video, that's not the case.

@ladams00 you're still spooling those turbos way into tens of thousands of rpms. then just shutting it off, so you have no circualtion of oil through that blazing hot turbo, scorch your oil and ruin your turbo bearings. and yes, even though theres no load on the engine, which greatly increases spool, youre still heating them up quite a bit.
