Believe me, Nena is the epitome of the conventional "asian girl". She loves cute things, she's hyper, she's CONSTANTLY flashing the peace sign with her fingers (cruelly ironic, if I do say so myself)... Her child-like femininity coupled with these traits just seals the deal.

That sign with the fingers was always explained to me as (at least in Japanese culture) being a "V" or victory sign. Used like a thumbs-up is used in the west.

Granted Nena is hyper most of the time; but she also looks really downcast when the hyper image is broken (like when she told Setsuna not to piss her off). That is what signifies it (to me) as a manic trait instead of a cultural trait.

As for loving cute things, I didn't see an example of that in the show.

Secondary explosions are possible with a lot of militray/extraterrestrial vehicles. Oxygen tanks, munitions depots, even highly charged capacitors can all violently explode if improperly handled. Ultimately though, despite all the rationalizations, it's done for dramatic effect. Plus it lets the characters have a final dilaogue/soliloquy before they die.
