This song is a pure stroke of genius. Literary and relevant. It's about government, it's about religion, all spun into the Branch Davidian - Justice Department standoff narrative in Waco Tx. I remember seeing it all on TV when I was 13. A bunch of naive, but innocent people holed up in a compound with the full bore of the US government bearing down on them. The whole thing was horrifying, regardless of what you think about Janet Reno's decision or David Koresh. Complete tragedy on all sides.
This song is about the Waco Siege in Texas. Like 60 people died. That's what you want to celebrate at your funeral?! And are you that shallow that you actually sit and plan your own funeral for real? Are you like the vainest person that ever lived? Do you want a marble statue of yourself to commemorate the great person you are as well? Come on man. Have some substance and look beyond your own horizons, cooo?
anyways: what's so wrong about "planning" a funeral? are you planning your birthdays? so, whats so great about them - you are more likely to celebrate your own person on that occasion. besides, your funeral will come for sure - you cannot be so sure about your next birthday!
I do know what he means... having a beautiful/your favourite song played at your funeral - brilliant!
nao sei a quem te diriges, mas pelo menos foi esse o meu caso. granda som. Já agora, sabes qual é a música q passa na publicidade do Jeremiah? Tenho quase a certeza q é Rage against the machine ou Audioslave
This song is about a the Waco Seige of the Branch Davidians by the ATF. It lasted 51 days ended with a fired that consumed the entire compound in less than a half hour. Seventy-six people, including 21 children and two pregnant women, along with Davidian leader David Koresh died in the fire. The FBI thought it would be a great idea to pump tear gas (a gas that is meant for outdoor use) into the compound to get the Davidians to come out. The gas was also extremely flammable.
I'd put Mighty Joe Moon in my 20 favourite albums of all time. No one weak track. My acoustic guitar is tuned a semi-tone down permanently as a result and I love playing it fuzzed out through my amp. A big influence is Grant-Lee on this humble guitar player!
Wow what a kiss-off to the ATF and the Government for their involvement in the Koresh killing in Waco, and other actions too, great protest song, well done, and doesnt come off as preachy like other protest songs, and i hate protest songs, funny!!!! GLB are totally original not PJ knock-offs!! And personally im glad they never blew up, not a lot of people know about them and thats the way i like it!
'Pray the holy war is ending'. GLB were 'underrated' because something rare seems to be spoken to - a spiritual music if ever there was, what a genius poet, voice, and soul!
I have heard one or two others compare GLB to Pearl Jam - but never anyone who has listened to GLB more than once / twice.
I think the comment comes from recognising Phillips' deep voice, and the bands were around at same time.
That's where comparisons end for me.. it doesn't recognise the range of Phillips' voice... no insult intended above poster, but I think its an uninformed observation.
GLB had just what you say they should have had - a music all of their own.
No one will ever have a deep voice without getting compared to eddie vedder. It's fucking sad. Eddie wasn't the first to have that voice. Remember Jim Morrison.
Eddie Vedder wishes he had a voice this amazing. He's got a good voice, but I don't know if I can think of anyone with a voice that rivals Grant's. Not many singers can give me the chills like him.
Wow. I'm an idiot because I compared two rock singers. I learned my lesson. I'll never do that again. Lol.
I was just responding to other comments that compared Pearl Jam to GLB. In my opinion, there is no comparison. I think PJ are talented musicians, but most of their music is, to me, derivative, boring and played-out.
I don't know of any other person who hooked up a 12 string acoustic to a fuzz box to experiment with feeback and play the thing like a fucking electric.
Mrscarpachie, you just about summed it up. Grant is an amazing guitar player. I've seen him around 6 times or so, by himself, with a backing band, etc. But I think I loved his solo shows the most. He's such a great entertainer. He's hilarious. And he does a crazy-awesome Willie Nelson impersonation. I wish I had seen GLB back in the day. One of my greatest musical regrets.
Two Words for those in the know: ZenPaul. I saw them 3x, once opening for REM, once opening for Smashing Pumpkin's and once headlining at the Beacon in NYC. One of the best bands to ever exist.
Ahhhh yes!! The mighty Grant Lee Buffalo!! Awesome song from one of the Top 10 albums of the 90s. This band really mattered. Have seen Grant (post-GLB) several times live and he ALWAYS delivers. Amazing talent and a hell of a nice guy.
What I really like about this video is that there is not one clip from the Branch Davidian siege (which is the surface action referred to in the song) and in avoiding the obvious visuals, creates an entirely more dynamic presentation. In essence, it is taking the song beyond the lyrics.
The above comments are true, GLB is way underrated.
The mid 90's were a great time. GLB was my favorite band. I once saw GLB, Ben Harper, Live, Counting Crows and Jeff Buckley in a month. I miss Chicago. See Grant Lee Phillips when he's on tour. He delivers the mail in an intimate setting.
I saw them in both small (Fez) and large Meadowlands Arena and both times was blown away. I've seen GLP a few times solo as well. He never phones it in. Good stuff.

Great song.
When this song was made ?
Remind me a little bit Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs, some alternative rock of the 80's.
