If U do not step completely off the Seg, in circumstances like in the vid here, The Seg's computer thinks you are still on it, completely in control and your inputs to the control stalk (often mistakenly used as a handle) are valid and what you want the Seg to do next.

The forward and backward oscillation is tough to deal with for people who are unfamiliar with the Segway. The tendency is to compensate (or step off) just as one would do with a bicycle, but the Segway has enough smarts to deal with it itself. Couple the two together with the human vs machine response time and you get the porpoising motion. I don't know how many times I've seen new riders have this happen. With practice though they get quite used to letting the machine do it's job.

i rode my first segway at a first robotics comp 4 years ago and when i stepped on it. it did the same thing and you just stand there and it stops its really odd and gives you that funny feeling in your gut but never had it happen after that :)
