@bestamerica Believe it or not, most cars from the '70s wouldn't pass current crash test standards, though the front bumpers were rated for 5 mph; today's are only required to take 2.5 mph. From what I remember, those huge bumpers protected the car well, but always ended up a bit cockeyed and cost a fortune to fix, so they were a mixed blessing. At least you could replace a headlight, lens and all, for $2.99, not the $600 it can cost these days.
how sad is this $4688 in 1975 is equivalent to $19,506.14 in 2010 in the year 2010 the 19,500.00 car your lucky to buy something like a ford focus or Chevy aveo maybe a Toyota Carola you most surely wont buy anything near the magnitude of that in a new car and for $4688 in 2010 that would be a car that would be maybe 10 or 15 years old if that.
@Jukeboxguy00 They were good for sex too. If you just wanted to kick back and spend the night in the back, they were great for that too.....Those were the days.
@ford9572 Vacations were fun back then as it was actually FUN getting to where you were going in one of these highway cruisers. The room was incredible!
This clips seems to have been recorded off of a monitor and the audio is picked up from a mic. The original audio wouldn't sound like that and most likely sounded quite good.
Tropical Chevrolet's street address is like the old Biscayne model. That was the old super low priced Chevrolet that was sold to police departments, goverenment agencies or to people who wanted a full size car but, did not want to spend extra money. From 1973 to 1975 The Biscayne was ONLY sold in Canada.
@StoneCold75 Thank you for the info there. I did see an old 1974 sedan sitting in Fremont, California. Car was from Toronto Canada and still in back of a GM repair shop there. Biscaynes were also used as Taxicabs in Canada.
My family owned a 1975 Impala Wagon and when I drove it I found the mileage to average 8-15 mpg. The 15 was on the highway without using the AC and staying within the speed limit, which was then 55 mph.
We had no major issues with the car but it was sold in 1989 with 130,000 miles on it. The transmission failed when the car was about 13 years old and 115,000 cost maybe $700 to rebuild. Shortly after that we replaced the radiator and water pump.
But the only reason that car was sold was my mother was too sick to drive and I delivered pizza and commuted to school. So I bought a new compact car with much better mileage. And yes, it was a Chevy.
I forgot to mention that my family did buy chevrolets from Tropical Chevrolet. But the 1975 Impala wagon my family owned that I mentioned here was purchased at Adams Chevrolet in Delray Beach. Later known as Dennis Fronrath and has since moved from its downtown location and become part of the MARONNE monopoly of dealers in South Florida.
I am glad to know that Tropical Chevrolet still exists. Other than Roger Dean in West Palm Beach, they may be the only original Chevy dealers left in S FLA
I remember "old smokey" - passed it on the way to and from school in the 'grove'!
The Chevy and the pitchman remind me of Chevy Chase and the station wagon in National Lampoon Vacation. If I recall correctly, the dealership wasn't far from the old "Playboy" club at 79th and Biscayne.
Ignoring the gas mileage, that Impala wagon looks one roomy land yacht (be interesting on the corners) - haul up the anchors, put it in cruise mode and let many cubic inches of V8 haul from coast to coast...
Beautiful.

Even full-sized vans get better mileage today!
When did it break down and what was the part that failed?

I lived in Florida, Miami, since 1975. Tropical Chevrolet is still there, a few blocks from my home.
And, lucky me, my dad bought a used 75Impala for me in 1978.
