What a crep this fred gretsch is. Hes the braging about his patents, that his dad got. And yes hes the guy that all the talks about in the industry for trying to grab a small companies patent away from them. This guy is a real piece of work.
The last statement in the video describes the intimacy of making a drum shell come to life is such a very true thing. It becomes a personal thing, an exchange of energy between the maker and the drum itself that results in a more deliberate sound. A sound that was created from the mind of another, carrying the drum artist's ideas into all the music their instruments create.
Their mark on the sound of the world is undeniable, these Gretsch drums. So much great music was that Gretsch sound!
drums are like the operating system war. Lets take say, mapex and grestch. Mapex is like microsoft windows, its pretty reliable, works well, sounds great but it just feels like its missing something. Gretsch is like Apple OSX, sure it may be more money, but the tiny details are sooooo much better. Its just a lot more ascetically pleasing to play a gretsch kit compared to a mapex kit. A gretsch drum kit feels like "your" kit, not just an everyday drum kit.
Grees I just bought a Mapex QR and I could have bought a Catalina Ash for the same price without hardware. Now I dont know wht to do I dont like the toms and its only bassword which is crap, never played a Gretsch though
im not as sure. this analogy doesnt really work if you think windows is better.
and have you ever played an orion? i've played '73 round badge gretsch kits and orions sound so much better (granted though they dont have the character of the gretsch and technology has improved alot).
but i think its unfair to compare them in this way anyway, they're made for different purposes, for different styles and using different manufacturing processes. they all however sound great!
@dave90mckeague Mapex are made for rock-pop they has a more opened sound , Gretsch are made for jazz ,funk, classic rock .... they had a tighter sound . Both are great. I have a Usa Custom and a Pearl BRX Master series (Birch).
Read what I typed; I said that the Black Hawk series drums were manufactured in China. Also, that comment about Gretsch and Mapex is your opinion; Mapex doesn't really do it for me, because their drums did not have the sound I was after, my Renowns did. It's just my personal preference, everyone has one and I'm glad you do.
i wonder if wanda painted my blackhawk lol......i love gretch, but i dont understand why they use such a rough sandpaper on the bare wood. id use like a 300 to finish off or something (no comments about the fact that they use 300 grit after they applied the paint, it's not the same thing)
sorry black hawk series is not USA. But the Mapex shell is not either but the Mapex maple shells have the best sound I have EVER heard from a maple shell. Gretsch has serious competition from Mapex in my opinion! Ive been playing for 25 years and Mapex has unbelievably impressed me with thier sound and mounting hardware durability
i love my gretsch kit and what they say about making the kit "worthy" of buying is so true i have the gretsch usa custom maple but i also have the cheaper catlina maple and they kick ass!
Their bass drums sound so incredibly good! I learned this when I was shopping for drums in '05-'06. Guitar Center usually has several sets to play on, and I compared with Tama, DW, Yamaha, and Pearl. I disliked Gretsch's suspension system, bass drum hoops and claws enough to go with Pearl instead.
It's all a matter of personal taste. I've been playing Gretsch drums for many years and they adapt beatifully to any musical situation. I had a set of Camco's back in the early 70's that were very similar in sound & construction. Gretsch is an example of American manufacturing at its finest - pride of workmanship and respect for the craft. The history alone makes me proud to own & play their drums.
Gretsch drums are a rather unique set tone wise but the saddening thing is this. they no longer produce the single head drum shells. I have used Gretsch drums for some years and I've got to say that they are now becoming overpriced for their sound. SONOR drums now sound better and have some new features.
Tune your Catalina Jazz up next to a USA Custom and find out. You may actually prefer the sound from you Catalina because the tuning range on a USA Custom is higher than most other modern drums
Indeed, I could do that. I really love the sound of my Catalina Jazz set, although it's quite cheap they're very warm sounding (and comfortable in a low range, mahogany wood)
@pazootka FORTUNATELY , THAT WOULD BE THE CASE ..THESE DRUMS ARE THE HIGHEST QUALITY GRETSCH DRUMS , AND IN ORDER TO SHOW THE WORLD WHAT THAT GREAT GRETSCH SOUND IS ALL ABOUT , I DON'T THINK THEY WOULD GO WITH THEIR INTERMEDIATE DRUMKIT..THE CATALINA JAZZ KITS SOUND FANTASTIC COMPARED TO OTHER DRUMS OF THE SAME CALIBUR AND PRICE RANGE , WHICH GOES TO SHOW THE SUPERIOR QUALITY GRETSCH HAS OVER MOST DRUM COMPANIES !
I love my kit fat clean attack my kit I also own a vintage round badge kit

You Blackhawk is outsourced to china. Only Gretsch USA Customs are made in the USA.

Sonor has been making ply shells far longer than since 1927. They have also been around much longer than Gretsch, as well as most companies.
