  • One of the 30 or so.....all time world class doo op favorites.....!

  • this is a ladies choice ladies and gentleman

next we'll paly ben e kings i who have nothing

what todays generation is missing is REAL music

  • THIS IS A GREAT SONG!

    FANTASTIC SLOW DANCE!

  • Great song......Great Singer! Vinny, The Past-Tells.

  • DANCED A MANY SLOW DANCE TO THIS CLASSIC TUNE.I WASN'T THE BEST DANCER BUT I KNEW THE GIRLS THAT WERE AND I ALWAYS PICKED THE ONE THAT MADE ME LOOK GOOD .HOT ROD

  • Ed townsend had a son david who wrote and produce and with his friends the ...SURFACE...SONG ONLY YOU CAN MAKE ME HAPPY,DO YOU REMEMBER THAT IN THE EIGHTIES, at ed helping that went with a tenn label ...and the rest id history...david townsend died at the age of fifty,i think in 2005.

  • Ed Townsends masterpiece! The wonderful simplicity was a trade mark of all his

unforgettable songs! Example:" Let's Get It On " I was fortunate to be taken under his guidiance and contribute a few songs with him for The Shirelles! He will always someone I will always cherish! Thanks, Mrscandalous! Al Stewart

  • Legend. Brilliant.

  • This song reminds me of 'Pumpkin' - a girl, not the veg.

  • Ed Townsend was great in that PBS Special. What really knocked me out was the lead backup singer..That beautiful soulful young lady giving such a fantastic tribute. I marvel at how someone can even improve an old classic, with the right feel for it.

  • Plas Johnson on sax

  • One of the great all time love songs, I danced to it many time as a teenager.

  • Ed Townsend was married to Theola Kilgore who sang "This is my prayer". I think he was her manager also.

  • @raymoles Very interesting- I did not know that.

  • I remember this song. It was THE song to grab the girl you were at the party to be with. It was the slow grind cut of all. After the dance was over I had to walk bent over to get back to the seat.

  • @ArbitratorMatt I got quite a chuckle from your comment - I imagine quite a few guys had the same back problem you had! LOL!!!

  • Wow! where did this heart-rending, danceable music go? His heart is in this song, as were the hearts of so many of the old artists. Long live oldies but goodies!

  • I'm rediscovering this song since it is seldom played but always remembered from the classic chrous and jazzy sax and clear voice of Ed Townsend

  • I saw him sing this signature song on a Doo-Wop show in 2000, just a short time before he passed away. This is a true classic, and it was moving to see him actually sing his song. A beautiful, lasting song. True artistry.

  • 1958 damnit where did it go?

  • Jazzalex22

I had to laugh at your post .. I play guitar and I love jazz, swing, and my heart is still with this beautiful music, all, or most of which occurred before 1965 or so ... that's when drugs started really catching on and society and music started the slow march toward garbage that you mentioned with GaGa and the losers .... hahahaha I had to laugh, you are so right. Thanks for posting these great tunes.

  • where's the trance techno version of this song?

  • Danced my first dance, kissed my first kiss, and probably made love for the first time to this song! Such beautiful memories of a small cannery i grew u in during the summer months. "For your Love"

  • @Maryokie - Mary...PROBABLY??? You are funny, babe! I was probably there! An absolutely beautiful song. I once whispered this song in a girl's ear while Ed sang it on the stereo and the lights were low. I guess she decided to test me because she left and went and I haven't been able to find her or her love "anywhere". Because of this song, though, I'll never forget her!

  • @Maryokie What a wonderful comment...............That's what is was all about back then......Lovely........

  • Used to request this song all the time. Love it.

  • i would slow dance to this song if i had a girl to dance with. girls hate me for some reason. i dont even do anything to them. they just hate me. i wonder why?

  • @MegaPacman5 Probably and I'm just guessing, you either come on too strong,or lack self confidence.

  • I work with a nurse that was listening to todays hits and I ask her if 40 years from now would she be listening and wishing they would play some oldies from the 2011 years, ??

  • what wonderful, old, memorie this brings back. love it! thanks

  • Mom and Dad's first dance song. Love you mama and daddy.

  • Ed Townsend was on one of the PBS Doo-Wop era fund raising shows

not long ago singing this song.

  • Comment removed

  • LOVED this when it was sung in Ally Mcbeal.

  • Beautiful ballad, well done Mr. Townsend.

  • Heavens to Murgatroid! I've always loved this song. But up until now I always thought that was Jerry Butler singing it! What a tremendous voice Ed Townsend had! He certainly had the talent to become a bigger known star! THANKS for posting this utterly delightful "blast from the past"! You've MADE my day! :-)

  • @JubalCalif

You might be confusing this with Butler's "For Your Precious Love". Both songs are just gorgeous.

  • @Babyhowdy233

Perhaps. In any case, I thank you for your thoughtful comment.

    :-)

  • @JubalCalif

    :)

  • Great song! What year was this recorded?

  • @HoboGus

    Song is from 1958.

  • Sentimental and atmospheric song ....

  • MR. ED TOWNSEND was introduced to me by GENE "Poo Poo" Anderson and he co-wrote Let's Get it On with MARVIN GAYE, he was a fine Mentor to me and helped me throug a difficult time in my life! We talked a few days before his Death and I will Cherish him Forever!

Ann Dandridge POWERFUL PEOPLE and FRIENDS (Google Me)

  • @anndandridge Thank you for sharing your memories.

  • If there was a better record to come out of the year 1958, please name it for me. Later remade by the Righteous Brothers in 1965. Their version ain't bad, in my opinion, but still doesn't come close to this one.

Larry N. Boyington, aka Larry Neal, former curator of the Wax Museum on the big 1520 KOMA

  • @larrynealwaxmuseum I KNEW there was another version of this but I wasn't sure who did it. Loved the Righteous Bros.!! This was a great era for love songs. Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin... yeppers!

  • This song came out in the late fifties; oh man, what a time to be alive in nyc. The cars, the hot rods, the girls, the songs.. slow me down to a crawl...just dreaming of the times of real music...take me back now..............

  • To My Annekins,

This song so reflects the love and passion I feel for you. You are my love my life the air I breath...Truly you were a gift from God to me. I will never let you regret a day with me....I will love you forever my sweet Irish Rose.....

  • to my annekins,

This so reflects my love and passion for you.......I Love you my sweet Irish rose! You are Gods gift to me I need nothing else my love my life

  • this is the kind of music that people should be listening too instead of all that stupid shit

its sad cuz im 16 and id rather be listening to this kind of music than the music form my generation

this goes to show our generation are stupid and dont know what real music sounds like

  • @edoodoo1 I was like 14 when I heard this song on an episode of Ally McBeal. Loved it:) I TOO was always a fan of the oldies, even as others in my age group favored the more current hits.

Just listen to what makes you happy:)

  • I heard this for the 1st (&only) time on Ally too!'97??? Instantly fell in love&have bn trying fruitlessly2find it but couldn't remember the name or words, just the gorgeous melody&the savage voice of the girl playing the piano (not Vonda!). Today, I had an epiphany&finally 'For your love, I would do anything' fitted perfectly to the melody in my head! I've actually bn on the verge of tears I'm so happy2have found it&for it 2b just as gorgeous as I'd thought!:):) Check Barbara Mason's version!G*

  • A One In A Million Song; too bad music has lost such deep feeling.

  • the very best, that's why we still listen to it. Thanks!

  • May well be the greatest love song of all time. And believe me at my age (graduated HS in 1961) I have heard many of them. I wish everyone could have experienced growing up in the 50's on the east coast. Life was great, America was strong and the music was the best, absolutely the best from country to Doo Wop to Rock and Roll. What a time, what a time !!!!!

  • @DrBob43PA Today's so called music and performers cannot stand up to that era ( i graduated in '67). Those who will be around in 50 years see if your generation singers/groups will be remembered as well as those from the '50's '60's and '70's. It's hard to remember songs/singers from the last 3 decades already.

  • @dwtslvr I don't know. Not taking away from the fifties, sixties and seventies but the eighties put out some awesome love tunes too. Love happens in all generations. : )

  • Best love song of all time! Beautiful, what heart!

  • The sax in this song knocks me out. It's the perfect compliment to Ed Townsends wonderful voice.

  • I think Phil Spector studied this arrangement.

  • What's a bloke?

  • @PaTudie ,

A bloke is an informal noun meaning a "man, guy or fellow."

  • I should also add that it is a British expression.

  • 1110 KRLA .. Memories!!!!!

  • What a voice!!!

  • Word had it that when they record this Cleo Lane was singing back up and King Curtis was on the sax. No matter. It is still one of the best all time love songs ever written and recorded. RIP Ed. You have left us an eternal gift.

  • this bloke really can sing wow what a voice.

  • @davidwalsh66 This bloke is now about

77 years old, and I just saw a recent video of him singing, and he has not lost his touch.

  • Oh how I love this song! Use to hear it now & then on nostalgia or oldies stations but never knew the name of the singer! Mr Townsend had (has?) such a powerful voice. A unique talent, without a doubt! And it's such a pretty song. A beautifully romantic ballad. I never tire of listening to it. THANKS so very much for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! And may you & yours have your HAPPIEST holiday season ever! :)

  • I am thrilled that I have felt like this in my life, thanks Ed for putting my feelings into words...

    Regards from southern Mexico

  • for your love tell why you need love

  • Voted one of the best love songs of the Doo-Wop era and beyond,Ed Townsend was voted as the all time best One-Hit Wonder on VH1's 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders 2. I especially grew up with this song. I can't find it on Itunes anywhere. Music was great in it's day but now it suck buttox. Now we get artists today like Lady Gaga, All-American Rejects, Maroon 5, Lil Wayne, Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift and just retardation. I feel bad for late 90 kids or new generation kids don't listen to this.

  • @jazzalex22

    ain't it the truth!

  • Music has long been a social billboard from which we seek to alter our life and times. Our current musical offerings seem to emulate from sub lingual austrolpithicanthapus artists (if one can call them as such) the likes Ed Townsend would have regarded as simple, aboreal primates.

  • couldn't have said it better myself wildblueflyboy

  • @jazzalex22 Townsend was co-writer and co-producer on Marvin Gaye's "Lets Get It On", "If I Should Die Tonight", & "Keep Getting It On", He wrote "Foolish Fool" for Dee Dee Warwick, later covered by British band Sublime. Led Zepplin's D"Yer Mak'er is based on "Foolish Fool". Townsend wrote the Impressions classic "Finally Got Myself Together", And Theola Gilgore's r&b classic "For The Love of My Man". Townsend was an attorney who helped fellow artist negotiate contracts. more than 1 hit wonder.

  • @jazzalex22 teach them love them, and let them know the glory of 1950's music

  • @jazzalex22 This was & still is one of my all time favorites. As a teen,. I grew up in the '50s & '60s when music was at it's best. All gave me the best memories of almost every moment of my youth.

BTW, Peter Townsend's original version of "For You Love" is available through PBS on a 4 CD set.. Call 1 800 727 1017

  • @jazzalex22 Your comment was soo true, this was music..........Where are the love songs today these poor teens can't even fall in love anymore, it's so sad.

  • i just love it!!q hermosa cancion aun en estos tiempo suena hermosa

  • To JohnnyPoetic.........Foolish??

If you haven't felt what this man has felt, then you should find another field besides poetry.

  • Great song from the heart though somewhat foolish. As there is no such thing as one love when it takes two or more to have that "Love" strong. It's something I'll write about or already have.

  • This must be the all time best and most beautiful song I have ever heard....My!!! what talent and the lyrics just capture my heart. Thank you so much for posting this song.

  • HIS GREATEST EVER!!!!!!

  • What a voice---love this song!!!

  • Nena I love u too with all my heart and soul. you do have my love and always will have it u mean everything to me baby " I LOVE U SO MUCH BABY " I'm all urs

  • License I ♥ LOVE ♥ YOU BABY WITH ALL MY ♥ HEART ♥ AN SOUL. AN I WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR YOUR ♥ LOVE ♥ BABE BUT I KNOW I ALREADY HAVE IT.

  • Ed Townsend sings with oh so much feeling and soul. I just love hearing his music.

  • This song is pure class! Thanks for sharing Mr.S14

  • How can you beat this rola? It sounds as good today as in 1959

  • I can't get sick of this song.
