  • I wonder if your ip addy can be acquired from the Opera domain service?

  • This is a very interesting its a step forward before the other browsers

  • I just got done returning a PogoPlug "personal cloud" accessory that I bought at Best Buy. PogoPlug sucked. I'm gong back to Opera unite.

  • hihí_Äný_gùYs_wÅNt_tò_chÃt_with_më

  • I run Opera unite with all sorts of media and file apps. I have a 1 TB external hard drive hooked up and I can access all my stuff from anywhere in the world. I share slideshows to Facebook all the time and the best part is that I keep control of all my files (not Google or someone else). I even have a blog and a web site running through Unite. My friends can even upload files to a *secret* folder. How cool is that?

  • haha! This adds is a joke, right? :D

  • @MrTipiaf I laughed at this ad when it first came out. Now I am an Opera Unite fanboy. Unite is awesome for sharing files, music, photos, videos, etc without having "The Cloud" control your files. Now I run my own personal "cloud" with Opera Unite. I don't understand why more people haven't discovered this.

  • i love Opera Unite it helpme and my gf a lot to share pic files and send big files thank u opera

  • An open letter to Opera's staff

You've finally made it. You've made me hate Opera.

Fuck you. You're the scum of the earth, no wonder your browser isn't even in the official league. Maybe when you'll care about your fans you will do better. But banning everyone who wants to help, and KEEPING someone like PESALA, is against nature. Fuck you ever so hard in the ass, mouth and ears.

    Sincerely,

    Cosmin Gurau

    an EX Opera fan.

  • I'm new with Opera and at first i was not really impress but now i found that this Browser is amazing, i really like Opera Unites,Bit Torrrent include in the browser, the service mail etc...

  • Known Opera for past 9 years...the best browser ever!

    Unite...are Google/Yahoo shivering?

  • Known Opera for past 9 years...the best browser ever!

  • The King of Browsers in the World "OPERA"

  • CREEPY

  • If Opera believes in this vision, why are they posting this video on YouTube? shouldn't they be posting this on their own PC / server? why put this in the cloud?

  • @ml2k8 because they're preaching to people who are on the cloud?

  • @ml2k8 what's the point of your question?

  • i liked the idea.

  • I remember using first freeware opera v6 point something with the banner in it. Like 8 years ago. Never switched to any other. If the render didnt work well I used Internet explorer and got so unhappy when I clicked iE to be primary web-browser by mistake that I had to reinstall the whole operating system. Thats how great meaning opera has for me. I dont care about new chrome or old FF that got virus into my computer just by first day of using it. This is Trustworthy secure&fast&decent browser.

  • No doubt it's a nice browser, but that advertisement sounds like it's made by scientology.

  • My fav browser really rocks!!

  • Приглашаю русскоязычных пользователей на uniteopera. ru . Особенно буду рад видеть программистов с материалами по разработке для Opera Unite

  • What application was used to create this video?

  • Opera...the greatest browser ever.

  • Comment removed

  • I have been using opera from last 3 years. Its fastest, lightweight, secure and feature rich browser.

    Great work Team Opera!

  • Thank you Opera for 8 years of fast browsing.

Opera Unite is just what was needed to put you back in the lead.

    Good luck!

  • Opera has been innovating since 95, its obscure but has bought tech like tabbed browsing, data pipelining and many more and they continue with their innovation. Not to mention its the most secure browser out there.

  • OPERA ROCKS, i`m gonna change my browser now (firefox>opera)

  • Opera FTW

  • Opera pwns.

  • Opera's last stand? They gain more of the market every year...

  • Unite is not included in the Beta build, they're testing it at the moment. You can however download a fine-working Unite from the Opera lab. Just google it.

  • Where's Opera Unite in Beta 3?

  • You need the 10.10 version for unite.

  • I got Beta 3 Build 1708.

Builds 1703 and 1708 both have Unite.

  • I got 1723, without unite. :P

  • Yeah well I got 1724 with Unite.

Sorry Opera Software but I'm gonna wait for 10.10 with Unite to be released before using Opera 10 officially.

  • They already done this today (laugh). 1729 and 10.10. I think, it's good combination for you. ;)

  • Ooh, that's good

  • It would be cool if this would connect for me instead of showing me that stupid "Opera Unite Error" at the bottom of the screen every single time I open Opera.

  • This is a decent tool for p2p, however this commercial is very, very wrong. You can direct connect to anyone you want all day long, you'll still be doing it by logging on to a strangers server. The stranger is your ISP and no matter what you have to go through them to get to the internet.

  • I'm trying to figure how this is different from DCC...

oh, wait. It is new and shinny.

    Ok, I get it now.

  • The big difference is that THIS is relatively easy for Joe Average to set up. Anyone tech savvy enough to Myspace could do this (not right now actually, but it's still in Alpha testing, but eventually). The "reinvent the web" is a bit much I think, but it certainly has good potential.

  • i dont know why they thumbed down your comment its your perssonal idea so you hate firefox and? i dont hate firefox but opera has met my needs thats all etc

  • Skynet :-D

  • It's a great idea. It's a shame you can't host / run the service from any browser. But installing Opera is easy, so no real problem.

  • How are you going to host services in browsers without a web server available exactly?

  • wow this is like epicly made lol

  • who said that u need to make yourself visible to others? u can share only with ur friends by giving them ur link and sharing an access pass, or just be the only one who can access ur own stuff placed on ur own pc wherever u r on the world - just one sms, call, email to somebody at ur home to turn the pc on - and u can download from it whatever u want.

  • no need to share it with anybody else - just ur own acc, just files u added urselfe (not whole pc), all protected by even a long pass, so nobody can login. just imagine - u can have ur own stuff from ur own pc wherever on earth u gona be without carrying with u an external drive or usbstick. u just need another pc and net connection. i think thats just a great idea.

  • Oh yes, and if you want to use distributed crypted data storage try installing Freenet and see for yourself how "fast" does this model work.

  • So what? There are lots of possible uses for Unite. You are whining about something that could be a possibility along with the thousands or millions of other possibilities.

  • I'm not whining. Those were comments to other people's posts. Personally, i don't see why you get angry. Have you ever heard of Apache? It's free and open-source web server for personal needs. If you really want to share your data through a server i suggest you try installing it.

  • i 've been testing the new opera beta

and i hav to say its awesome

opera congratulation you did it again

the best browser that could exist

i will wait for final release :D good job

    Opera

  • The idea is absolutely stunning, it also works stunningly nice. I only have a few suggestions for it but otherwise the service runs without flaw and my computer seems to love it too! Easy win on the side of Opera, keep up the fantastic work!

  • Ok so on one side, we have companies investing in Cloud Computing, where large groups of servers run applications for users. Then on the other hand, you have Opera Unite, where the PC can be a server. I imagine small P2P Networks between friends to run online games.Or maybe something more productive. You can do it with Hamachi I think but in this case only one PC would have to have a copy of the game(I think that would work). Any opinions on that? Or how Cloud Computing would fit in the picture?

  • Nice ideas, but it might need to mature a little more. It would have to be its own Unite service, listening for incoming requests at the URL Unite gives you.

... It's not a bad idea at all.

Not sure how the Cloud would fit in, though

  • In many cases these private gaming P2P networks can be useless because of ping. If you are gonna play some FPS and connect each player to other players directly chance is you'll get fairly high pings for many participants and that can render the game unplayable. Not to mention some player has to account gaming statstics, becoming the "evil" middleman.

  • XenOtai, stop being a moron now, OK?

Unite is not a "P2P network". It's a personal web server. You could of course have the servers talk to each other, and that would be fine.

    But you fail again.

  • It is not a P2P network. But when it is used for something it will be. Opera said it themselves. If there's no middleman it P2P which stands for "peer to peer", exchanging data directly.

  • What's the name of the music playing in the background of the commercial?

    Name? Artist?

  • That's a really nice commercial.

And the idea behind Opera United...

  • why did they use the same music from 'HOME' ?

type 'home project' in youtube and you see what i'm talking about..

don't give them access to you computer..

  • im scared

  • 0:36 SKYNET!!!!

  • lol

  • it uses ur computer as a server:D if you make a website you dont need to pay for the server.

  • It was about time someone used this concept. Sure you people could each and everyone install your own apache and packages or software to do the same, but we are talking about easiness of use. Something that even your grandmother will be able to setup.

And think about possibilities, while now we have a few services, later they can be extended or new ones can be created to feed our needs.

The concept about servers is just the tip of the iceberg, you have to understand the whole thing.

  • So Opera Unite is... a dial-up BBS?

  • No, Opera Unite is a web server.

  • Gee, ya think?

  • So why did you ask if it was a dial-up BBS?

  • A joke? Sarcasm? Intentional misinterpretation? Any of the above?

Why would anyone who knows what a dial-up BBS is expect a new such software package to be released in 2009? Honestly...

  • Opera 10 is going to be soo fuckin awesome!

  • So, does this mean that you can only share things when online?

If you add the hash network from Nintendo's Gameboy and make it portable to different kinds of OS then you really have a powerfull p2p suit.

  • We know that thats a 666 logo, OPERA!

You think you are smart huh?

You are not impressing anyone with your corporate subliminal symbolism.

Everybody knows what you are doing.

  • LOL.

  • love the 666 symbolism in red.

they can't stop using that esoteric crap.

shame there was no demonstration of how it works.

  • cool :o)

  • ljadfadd

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, because Apache is just so easy to install, and has all these services that let you set up file sharing, photo galleries, chat sessions, music streaming, etc. with a single click!

  • sounds deep ;P

  • Sounds cool. Could be useful for sending small files around, but a lot of people really don't have fast enough upload for heavy duty stuff (yet).

  • Another feature, witch will be copied by firefox and make them famous :(

  • Wow! Now you can send trojans directly to users!

  • You mean that you couldn't before? How does Unite send trojans in a way that nothing else currently does?

  • Precisely. This service is bullshit and does nothing that other P2P protocols can't.

  • Seriously? You're that dense?

This is in the name of getting rid of middlemen, like Facebook, MySpace, etc. They're not claiming that they've discovered a new technology-- they've just implemented it better.

Average people don't know any better. So, you have to bring simplicity to them. That's "Unite". Circle the wagons and get everybody on the right track.

  • Services you named aren't P2P. Many existing P2P services are without middlemen (and easy to use). And those that include middlemen do that for obvious reasons: to index data and present it online even when you are not online. That's why middlemen were introduced and are necessary in many cases.

  • Except Unite is not a "P2P protocol", you moron. It's a web server, and Unite services can be accessed from any browser, not just special P2P clients.

Also, TonightsLastSong never claimed that Facebook and MySpace were P2P, you moron.

You fail at understanding even the basic concepts of Unite!

  • Yes, it is a server. Which is installed on your machine - almost any P2P program does that. It's effectively building in a browser a P2P software. Opera already did things like that, for example with BitTorrent.

Please check your facts and don't call me a moron if you can't see that protocols are needed to exchange data and if it's a new kind of a server you need a new protocol to access it.

  • "This service is bullshit and does nothing that other P2P protocols can't."

LOL. It is not a P2P protocol. It's a web server! And no, Unite doesn't open you up to "direct trojans" any more than anything else.

  • Fail reinvention is fail.

  • dumbass cliche is getting old fast. "is fail"

Soon enough I hope people who use this dumbass term sound like they are in the 1970's disco era.

  • this post is full of fail

  • You didn't make any sense, i'll give you that.

  • ♪♫♫♪♫♪♪ELVIS says thank you very much♪♫♫♪♫♪♪

  • Very nice presentation, with a little more of support from addons developers may compete very seriously with firefox and IE.

Looking forward how opera united developes. ^^

PD: I use opera on my PDA and works great ^^

  • Compete? Opera is the best, has always been.

  • about time!!! ive been waiting for direct pc to pc connection for ages!!!

  • Sounds like a load of tripe

  • Why?

  • What were they thinking???

It's like giving unlimited and uncontrolable access to p2p programs for everyone.

  • How?

And how is it any worse than any other P2P program, like BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.?

  • Removing Web servers. There will always be ISP giants connecting us.

  • lol i dont understands it :(

as long as im on d internetz what is problem ?

how will this improve my experience ?

and not bein protected by a server firewall ?

is this just stupid or is it just me ;D

  • You can connect directly with other people to share stuff. No need to install lots of different programs or log in to some service. You just send them a link and they can download from any browser, directly from your computer.

  • the sign looks like the sharingan ;)

  • sounds nice... I'm looking forward to it, but i can't really imagine that it's gonna be that easy.

  • Silly

  • great news

  • Thank you Opera for making an attempt to return the web to the 1:1 experience that it was envisioned as, where every client is a server.

  • So a browser taking advantage of P2P architecture?

Kind of stupid :\ I don't quite see how this will really effect browsing web pages....seeing as web pages are normally hosted at a hosting server. You're rarely in need of information that is on someone's personal computer. As far as file sharing goes torrents and sites like rapidshare work just fine right now. I'm going to keep an eye on this to see where they are going with this but i don't expect anything ground breaking like they promise

  • I take it you did not bother to watch the clip to the end.

  • i watched the entire thing, feel free to tell me what i missed that makes this so revolutionary :\

  • Say you want to show your friend some photos. Sounds like a simple task, but it actually isn't; emailing a bunch of photos is annoying, and you have to do something like upload to facebook or flickr, just to quickly show your friend something. The idea with unite is that it's easier to quickly share stuff like this, as well as being easier to stop sharing when you're done. Google Wave is going down the same route.

  • picasa already makes it VERY easy enough to do that :\

It seems like all they're doing is re-branding old tech

  • Yeah, I'll agree that picasa has nice sharing controls

And half of successful technology is rebranding/repackaging old tech. Flash video was around long before youtube, and status updates were around long before twitter. They just did it best, made it easier to use for the masses.

  • i'll agree with you on all of that. i'm just holding opera up to the standard they presented for themselves. They said something along the lines as they were going to revolutionize the way we surf the internet(i'm not sure of their exact wording). I have nothing against the way they are using the tech, its just...they didn't do what they said they did

  • So you didn't watch the video after all.

Picasa means uploading to someone else's server instead of directly from your computer.

Re-branding old tech? That's like saying that the iPhone is just a re-branded Nokia form 1993.

  • you view that as a plus?

    Picasa

24/7 always on always connected high speed server

My grandparents computer - on a few hours a day on a moderatly slow connection

Where would i rather get their pictures from? Like i said before, i'm not bashing the tech i'm just saying opera set them selves up pretty big for this and in my opinion failed.

  • It may not be anything new, but it kind of is groundbreaking. I think that this is one of the first steps in turning every PCs and routers into personal servers in the near future...

  • googletube should censor this commercial

  • Why?

  • Não é só o google que tem idéias boas.

  • Great idea for Opera Software.

  • great idea. now let's see if it will actually work.

  • Awesome. Well done Opera

  • yeah opera is good but is damn slow...

  • Firefox 3.5 FTW.

  • indeed :]

  • if u cut the "middle man" than opera replaces them, so basically instead of servers tracking u opera is tracking u

  • not true at all, learn to computer dude so next time you won't sound like an idiot

  • Is it just me, or does the narrator sound like David Lynch?

  • Aaaand that told me nothing.

    Love,

    Ivekt.

  • lol i' watching this from a wii

  • lol, that probably took a while to type then.

  • Comment removed

  • Impressive!

Does this means Wii will become great media servers soon? Since they're using Opera.... but I guess not..

  • I've been waiting for this feature for 10 years!

  • Wow, Opera have invented torrents =D

All copyrighters now are to commit suicide. If earlier you had to find torrent trecker, register, download program, understand how it works etc, now you only have to install Opera. Welcome future!

  • mmm... Great Opera version, congratulations :P

  • this new Opera is great and I like it...

  • I have kind of sympathy for Opera.

Before I got an iPhone it was the only alternative Browser on my Java phone and it was fast as hell.

I wished Opera Mini/Mobile would be availible on iPhone because of its speed.

  • Running a Web server from your desktop is nothing new. Integrating it into a browser and idiotproofing it for the masses -- now that might get interesting.

  • Voice sounds like Ross' father in Friends...

  • yeah its great but there are people who are against file sharing, because thats their money(hollywood, Madonna...etc)

if this comes true nobody can stop file sharing, lol

  • file sharing can be positive since there is more to share then music. Presentations for example or Spreadsheets, home productions like your own movie or your private record etc!

  • wenzelsopinion

yeah ur right, but there is youtube, and torrents that are already there

so its just improving, making file sharing easier

  • Great ad and looking forward to the realism of it!

  • The end of Google is near.

  • Not if Google teams up with Microsoft. >_>

...But then Opera could grab Apple. =o

  • They're basically suggesting peer to peer, with presumably novel functions.

Let's not deny the value of servers though - with p2p you can only have your data saved locally!

  • I'd love to see Oracle buy Opera and leave it as a free standing corp. - not moving the offices. The distribution would increase and Larry Ellison would have a browser to compete with Microsoft.

With his own established innovative browser company and Java under his belt Mr. Ellison is positioned to have more leverage within the evermore prevalent Internet lifestyle.

  • I ♥ norwegian girls won't comment this tech yet though

  • I actually believe gender is irrelevant in todays modern society, Flowalicious.

  • Yah, im not really into men thoo heja sverige

  • i guess google and firefox fan boys didn't like it :))i am sure in 2-3 months other browser will try to have that feature.

    we like competition :))
