Darkness will soon be gone, From earth's deep hollows, As she in joyous song, Bids us to follow. With her we'll sing our song, As the new dawn appears, Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia.
Translation, Part 1, continued in next comment: Night casts its heavy veil, O'er homes and dwellings And as the sunlight fails, Cold woods are calling. Comes then into the night, Glowing with candlelight, Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia. Where darkness was so still, Soft sounds are crying, And as a joyous song, Rooms fill rejoicing, For on the threshold stands, Robed in her gracious love, Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia..
Underbart! Perfekt när jag vill beskriva vad Lucia egentligen är för vänner från andra länder. Dom stora paraderna funkar inte och inte heller dagis :) Det här är perfect, en folklig tradition i liten skala , Tack för det!
What a lovely presentation of our Lucia song!! I live abroad since several years and had some non swedish friends for a Lucia party, they were all facinated by your song!!
Like a lot of people, I thought this song was Italian, as it's usually given the Italian "ch" sound, and was sung by Mario Lanza, among others. But this is so so beautiful. I first heard it in Swedish on a Christmas album by Anne Sofie von Otter.
Jag bor för tillfället i England, och eftersom Lucia inte firas där tvingas jag leta på youtube för att komma i julstämning. Den här hjälpte verkligen!
I only found the words of this version to the swedish Lucia-song. I coun't find other lyrics. but obviosly there are, as they sang it in the globen concert and elsewhere. Please, swedish Lucia-Tradition-Experts, please explain us some more! Thank you and good jul!!
here in the south of italy we celebrate santa lucia with processions and a liturgy in the churches... i don t know why an italian saint is so popular also in sweden
@Alduccio81 We actually celebrate another version of Lucia. Our "Lucia" was a maid dressed in white that came to bring peace and harmony in the darkest and most dangerous night in the winter from the beginning :)
excuse me this Christmas song looks like (or just my impression) to the Neopolitan song Santa Lucia...I am not sure but, the melody is quite the same.
På tok för tyst och lågmält.

Beautiful!
At my daughter's school, it is the second grade that does the Sankta Lucia ceremony, visiting the nursery school classrooms with candles and cookies.
Although this is a still photograph, I feel it is the best posting on YouTube for capturing the ambiance of this lovely tradition.

It's more difficoult to find somethig in Italy that is not popular in Sweden, even one off our most popular ballad and poet
writter, wrote a natinal romantic balad about Italy only based on the fantasy after studing koserv tins in hi's store!!
(sorry fore terryble dyslektiv Swed-Englich
hope you can understand something off it)
