carlos alberta had a straight shot at goal were as de vries had to beat broadfoot and then shoot...so ours is technically better no haha.....mon the terrors!!!
No offence, but The 1970 Italy team are much better than Rangers. Also Carlos Alberto ran onto it and struck it first time, de Vries stopped it before hitting it. Lastly, Brazil scored theirs in the world cup, not an SPL match.
So irrelevant you needed your OF-biased referees to take us into a penalty shoot-out at Hampden. Noticed you had them today as well, no bookings despite baldo-Boyd and Whittaker diving around all over the place. :)
I think it's down to the clapometer: the yellow team gets what looks like polite applause for their goal whereas the tangerine team inspires a huge roar from the crowd, astonishment from the commentator and tears of joy from that rather emotional looking gentleman with the tangerine tie. No contest. Mind you, Hunt's sclaff off the post is up there...

Mark de Vries' goal is 10x the goal of Carlos Alberto! Kirk Broadfoot is MUCH better than any Italian defenders I can think of, so beating him must have been a far greater achievement...
imo the timing of the goal is irrelevant. if brazils goal has involved 1, maybe 2 defenders not trying then i might agree but they go through virtually the entire 11.
of course it's not irrelevant! Do you seriously think that they could have done that against Italy after 30 minutes? They would have been closed down, quickly. Look at the Italian players' body language. They're beaten, and they know it. They're hardly trying.
to beat a whole team with great movement and close control and then produce a fabulous finish - at a world cup final - it really makes the timing of the goal superficial.
no. if you read the other replys from caledonian1976 you will see he is saying that the timing of the goal is a factor in deciding how good the goal was. the italians where 'dead and buried' he states. i dont agree that the timing was important but the italians where far from 'dead and buried' as they where 'only 1 goal away from making it 2-3'. A goal by the italians would have changed the last few minutes. 1-3 is never 100% safe.
Feel free to download the match from Maxxed Football Forums. If you have watched the full 90 minutes, you will see that Italy give up the ghost as soon as it goes 3-1.
Or read Gianluca Vialli's book "The Italian Job" for an Italian perspective of a game that is most likely out of reach.
To suggest that Italy's resistance when 3-1 down with 3 minutes to go would be the same as it would be at 1-1 with 3 minutes to go is unrealistic.
who is suggesting italys resistance would be the same at 1-1? i am not.
simple fact is, and i dont want to be repeating myself or to patrionise you - this is a wonderful goal and because of such the timing is irrelevant. you cannot force scenarios into the discussion as these scenarios did not happen.
"you cannot force scenarios into the discussion as these scenarios did not happen"
Yes, you can. Put simply, Carlos Alberto's goal was allowed to happen. It would never have been scored if it had been 1-1 because 1/ Italy's defence would have closed down the Brazil players and 2/ Carlos Alberto wouldn't have taken such a shot - it didn't matter if he missed.
But I'm bored of this. Have the last say if you want.
also you say in a previous message that van bastens goal or massaros goal is the best cup final goal but if those goals had been scored near the end of a game already won, am i right in thinking you would not choose them?
Diego Maradonas goal against england in the world cup semis 86. would that go down in your estimation if scored late on in a game already won?
if your answer is yes to the above then i really cant say anymore.
Not van Basten's, because his goal wasn't dependent on the opposition.
Massaro's was more credible than Carlos Alberto's.
You don't understand the concept of important goals, or how important the quality (or lack thereof) is.
If a Diego Maradona ran through Swansea City's defence to score the goal he did, instead of against England's defence, then the quality of the goal would be devalued. Just as if he had scored that goal against a better defence it would have been increased.
Alberto had the ball played to him in loads of space - he just had to strike the ball low and firm. de Vries had to beat the defender AND the keeper, which he did brilliantly. I'm not seriously saying he is better than Alberto, but I think he had to do more for this goal than the Brasilian did.
I'm not going to argue with that, even as a United fan. I just love the way Pele is so nonchalant when he lays the ball off to Alberto. My claims about the United goal being better are tongue-in-cheek. Well, mostly. ;-)
Carlos Alberto's goal came at a time Brazil were 3-1 ahead with a few minutes remaining. Italy were dead and buried, and didn't try to put up much resistance. Whereas it was 1-1 with Dundee United and the Rangers players were trying as hard as they could.
For what it's worth, the best Final goal is either Marco van Basten's v USSR in 1988, or Daniele Massaro's 2nd in Milan's 4-0 win against Barcelona.
True, but Alberto scored his goal in the 86th minute when the Italians were already down and out. United's goal came in extra time when the scores were level - a very tense period of the match. Also, de Vries had to beat a defender before scoring. Anyway, it's not meant to be taken too seriously!
Must of been a great feeling for De Vries to score such a great goal to win the cup for United...oh wait.

rodge020679 3 years ago
Rodge, the timing of a goal is particularly relevant, simply because the attitude and organisation of a team is different when they have been beaten.
Do you think that Brazil would have been able to score that same goal if the score had been 1-1?
Caledonian1976 3 years ago
i understand what you are saying but your missing the point.
brazil have scored this goal. its fact. we have just watched it. to think up scenarios for it is dealing with fiction.
this goal is the best team goal ever scored irrespective of the time.
rodge020679 3 years ago
can i also add that juding by the time shown (41min) italy where only 1 goal away from making it 2-3.
