Laws should have been enacted 40 years ago banning coal and nuclear electric power generating plants, forcing utilities to build nothing but wind and solar farms, and outlawing gas fractionating. End of problem of what the energy source is.
It is what it always was: that big nuclear reactor in space: the sun.
Chevy plans on building 10,000 volts next year. How many tens of millions of americans upgraded over the last 5 years from some some standard TV set to some 40-50" plasma or LCD that tripled their KWH usage? Where was the grid overload concern? We need to address this issue, its just not critical at the moment, especially if you charge during off peak hours.
Its a complete joke that someone might charge 2k for a 240 charger, regardless, its not required and a 120V will work.
The chevy volt max will use 3.3 KW for about 3 to 4 hours. So worst case with a depleted battery would be 13KWH. The average US home uses about 30KWH to 40KWH per day. So your calculation about an entire homes energy is overblown. Again, not denying problems or infrastructure issues, but my guess is that you some hard on against the idea of EV's in the first place.
Before you start calling people stupid, exposing your profound ignorance, I suggest you get your facts right .The cleanliness of electricity is vastly different all across the nation. Regardless it is still cleaner than gas, but more importantly, even if it was the same. WE MAKE ELECTRICITY HERE IN THE US! We send 1,000,000,000 (thats a billion) dollars PER DAY to the middle east. I'd rather keep that money here than send it to people who don't really care for us. Even fox news would agree.
@TechSpank I was responding to one of your flock, not you. Yes, fossil fuels from the US mostly COAL & NG, plus nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, biofuel. Never suggested otherwise. Again, not perfect but better then foreign oil.
Valid concerns, however, I think you give a very negative spin on a great movement while explaining everything as worst case scenario.50 cent/ KWH in NYC? You don't mention the off peak grid surplus we do have. We are nowhere near having everyone converting to EV's overnight. We need to work diligently towards improving our grid with renewable energy/bio fuels. I suspect, the massive influx of flat screen TV's and continued use of incandescent bulbs has created a far greater short term problem.
@the43k Thanks for the comment, but the video is just about how much electricity it takes to charge one of these new types of cars. Not really about costs associated with doing so. I also didn't mention the costs of running the high amp lines to your garage if you already don't have one. TV's and light bulbs already use power in a home, these cars are brand new devices that use almost as much power as everything else in the household put together, not really the same.
Off peak rates are only 4 cents per kiwh where I live. My LEAF will only cost a $1.50 to charge to 100 miles of range.

The WHOLE point of electric cars is to reduce pollution. BUT WHERE DOES THE ENERGY COME FROM TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY??? #notrocketscience

@the43k We make most of our electricity from fossil fuels in the US. I didn't call anyone stupid before, but I am now. You are stupid.
