  • ♫....from the ice age..... to the dole-age...♪♫

  • Of all the guitarist dudes who've tried their hand at this song (on YouTube), you're the only one who has gotten it (Johnny Marr's guitar part) right. Congrats, you're great. I haven't checked lately, but maybe Marr is now recognized by a significant number of listeners as one of the greatest guitarist-writers ever.

  • that was incredible

  • brilliant take on the song. Slowing it down really highlights those mesmeric tones. I have a sheraton but cant get the sound right its much better with my Telecaster. Have started learning the song from your vid. Thankyou for placing it on youtube. Really impressed and inspired but i did love the smiths anyway!!!

  • I absolutely love it!

  • nice effect!

  • @markpaterson loved it so much your version is on my ipod :)

  • just exquisite

  • Sounds amazing, its great that you add a bit of variation to the main riff, you dont try and totally copy marr, what guitar and effects u using?

  • Wow nice epiphone dude !

  • You, sir, not only have impeccable taste in music, as you make that guitar sound like it's coming straight from heaven. Amazing tone!

  • this is a brilliant cover, the sound is pitch perfect, i think maybe it should be slightly quicker but it didnt stop me using this as my ringtone, great job

  • what amps/pedals/effects do you use on this man, it's amazing!

  • what kind of pedal do you use on this one? sound like Marr's one

  • Never noticed the variation at 00:35. Completely awesome! Sounds great on your Epiphone. (A Riviera if i'm not mistaken?) :)

  • Best cover version I've seen of this on YouTube... even better than Earwicker! ;-)

Great tone and beautiful playing. Standard tuning?

  • nice sound i agree. and thank you for playing it without the song on in the background. :)

  • now play it at the right speed ;)

  • tab pleeease bro!

  • you're a legend. nuff said.

  • btw, have you tabbed this? and is it online? x

  • this is awesome mate!

  • are you in Standard ? do you think thats what Marr used in the studio ?

  • Hey there just wondering is this the cherry color ? because on the internet some pictures make the guitar look alot more lets say pink ! haha

    thanks man!

    P.S great playing :)

  • @oasisrockerross I think it's Wine Red. I've seen the Cherry ones, and they're quite a bit lighter.

  • This is an absolutely mesmerising cover, most likely the best ever created. I love the melodic and harmonious sound of your guitar, it sounds a lot like the one Marr used on the original recording. You are a huge inspiration, watching this video, has really helped me believe that maybe one day, I can be at least, half as good as Marr was/is,

  • @GlAmPoPpRiNcEsS Thanks! Me too!

  • hey man, where did you get your guitat from, and what color is it. cherry ? or cherry gloss. thanks

  • @oasisrockerross I got it off eBay around 2006. It's Wine Red.

  • WICKED!

  • very nice!

  • Superb technique/playing and tone...and I've been playing since the 70s. Good stuff and well done vid. Thanks....now I have an idea of how to play one of my fave songs.

  • fantastic!!!! great sound man

  • such a beautiful song and beautiful playing there! do you have a tab for this? i learned the first part by watching your hands but can't figure out the rest...

  • @penguinoharpsichord No tab at the minute, but hopefully I'll get around to it soon.

  • @markpaterson Its been 10 months. Any tab?

  • well done great stuff

  • Increible, que melodia Dios!

  • muy bonito

  • has this guitar have mini-humbuckers or is like les paul mics?

  • special tuning?

  • nice sound....

  • Where did you get that red riviera? I tried getting one of those everywhere

  • hey guys im a 16 year old guitarist i have a band it be great if you can listen to me plz im trying to become famous tell me what u think dont be afraid to rate and comment btw great video

  • great! I for one love your additions...well done!

  • man i have the exact same pedal, could you please send me something about how you set it up?

    keep than coming, great covers

  • @catarinepaes Thanks! Sorry I can't remember the exact settings as it was quite some time ago now, but the combination of the MXR Super Comp and the MXR Stereo Chorus (with the Compressor BEFORE the chorus) should do it. Just have a fiddle with the knobs.

  • The chorus effect is so alike to the real thing, great job!!

  • Very nice, Mark, and great speed for us learners. I think you may have persuaded me to geta Riviera too - I've had my eye on the reissues out now for a little while....thanks!

  • Great man!!! really great!! video music!!! Congrats!! how you made the effects...i know u use chorus but how you mix it to sound like that!

  • fucking sick bro!

  • I love the speed of this and the position of your camera - it makes a lovely video to learn finger positioning/notes from! It's nice to see a post that you can learn from, not just another video to 'wow' at as people show off their skills!

Thank you. Beautiful sounding guitar too!

  • @ladytawny THANKS! That was the whole point I did these videos. Happy you're able to take something from it!

  • ace!

  • fantastic playing and sound.

  • what kind of chorus are you using?

  • @tdawg0993 MXR Stereo Chorus. See 'more info' at the top right under my icon for full gear info.

  • just made my cellphone melody

  • what sort of pedal for smiths-ish sound?

  • @DarockNrollkid4 See 'More info' at the top right under my icon for full gear info.

  • lovely sound and well played beautiful guitar too

  • Good tone, i'm pressuming that this is a newer model rather than a 67 original, if it is then it's a bargin to get a sound like that for the price. Been looking at these myself, i'd hate to buy then realise it's just an epiphone hash up that looks good but i think this has settled some fears

  • @duracellaltoids Yes it's the new(ish) model. It's actually an Epiphone Elite model that's was out in the early 2000's but has since been discontinued. I got it for a steal off eBay and I wouldn't part with it for the world.

  • sweet and clean. I like the tone in your fingers mate!

  • i hav this guitar. i highly recommend it. It has the mostly jangly clean tone and can really rock like a 335, if u tame the highs a bit. Noel gallagher used an epiphone sheraton with minis and that guitar sounded great

  • sweet love the tone and the relaxed approach to this riff, laid back and not too frenetic.

  • love this guitar

  • beautiful

  • would you recommend that particular guitar to me? If it is yes, what would you say about a bigsby onnit?

  • Yes. Absolutely. Funny you should mention a Bigsby - I actually bought the guitar with the intention of putting a Bigsby on it. The unique bridge tailpiece of the Riviera is only attached to the bottom end of the guitar around the strap lock, so removing it would leave no holes in the main body, unlike removing the tailpiece on a Casino, etc.

  • ... But in the end I never got around to it, though I'm kind of glad in a way. I've heard that Bigsbys can affect the tone and reduce the sustain of the guitar, not to mention the tuning stability. Although they do look very cool. Maybe I'll just buy a guitar with one already on it, as I'd hate to ruin the Riviera.

  • Hey thanks for the quick reply, and for the good advise. I can buy one, brandnew with the bigsby on it and i cant choose between the Riviera with the bigsby or the Sheraton II.

Anyway, thanks for youre advise, i will keep it in mind ;-)

  • Damn nice cleans. Very good mate. Keep it up :)

  • what a fucking amazing tone!!!!

  • Thanks! MXR Super Comp + MXR Stereo Chorus + Fender Deluxe Reverb. You can't beat it!

  • hehehe i know. it's a great configuration. Mxr super comp it's probably one of the best compressor...and for its price!! I have never try the mxr stereo chorus, but seems a good chorus.

  • thats brilliant Mark have you Daniel Earwicker

  • sweet

  • I like your sound , awsome....

  • Thanks!
