So let me get this straight... I've gone into the woods with a first aid kit, a headlamp and a guitar, but not so much as a fire steel, lighter or book of matches?
No need to breathe in the fumes of the batteries. Once some flames are obtained , they could be used to light fire in an adjacent spot. Then, all he has to do is extinguish the fire on the batteries.
I prefer magnesium strike rods to start fires.......Soooooo much safer, and they'll last forever anywhere you keep them.....on a keychain....in a first aid kit....a backpack. The sparks and shavings can also ignite damp items , which is a plus vs lighters or flame producing devices.
i don't like survivorman, i can't understand why people say he is better than Bear Grylls, when he doesn't start a fire with a LED flashlight and a piece of cotton... he does it with two sticks O.o
survival: using all your resources to the best of your disposal. you run out of lighter fluid in the wild or don't have any you'll be forced to eat shit raw like that other guy
@80spodcastchannel so true when I go to bass pro shops for my agate and flint fire starters because I want more experience with that method I plan to get 5 or so because of the rule of thumb "when you think you have enough get 5 times that much" Les Stroud's exact words so duh get all of the survival experience you can while at least young and cared for because what if you get laid off of work and can't find a job so yeah find keep indefinite backups because you never know if you will need them
@redroverguy shut the hell up .... how can you even say that? he was the one who goes into the wild without any food/water. Also he doesnt stay on the same place, he moves ahead.
@yuckyfart he has cheated a few times, and is not your average joe, vs survivorman. bear grylls does inordinary things for the hell of it, les is much more practical
can't believe all these idiots commenting and giving tips to a guy who lived for a whole year in the Canadian Boreal forest with no metal tools or whatever.
You guys probably NEVER even spent 1 whole day and night in the woods so why don't you just shut the F..K up instead of trying to be smart asses because you only pas for ASSES!
He didn't need to do that... If he had have gotten a tiny piece of guitar string and unraveled the wire off it he could have just passed a current through it and used that to start a fire... and kept his flashlight.
@DirtyDudeOnLin3 Look at 0:18. He has a guitar.... Well smart-ass, he could also take some wiring off the flashlight, take 1 strand off it and run current through it. That would get hot too.
@DirtyDudeOnLin3 OMG when i read your comment i started cracking up you seriously burned that dude lol "obviously seeing as how guitars are abundant in the wild" lolololololololololol
@DirtyDudeOnLin3 you have to find guitars while they're drinking at streams, but it's very difficult to sneak up on them and then it's only possible to kill them with a trombone, and good luck finding THOSE suckers. they're known to hide from humans.
@DirtyDudeOnLin3 He had a guitar with him. @GetMix he showed where the battery went, he didn't say he didn't have one. @salopy0 Rubbish . What are you people smoking anyway? Why all the weird uninformed illogical comments on this video? I only read the first page full and feel ashamed for the human race. Some people should not be allowed computer keyboards.
@1lupus LOL I was so upset at you twats, I made a typo. It should read "He showed where the bulb went" , not battery. I don't know why I bothered correcting myself though? Really given the tenor of the comments so far, a lot of people can't concentrate long enough to examine the logic of a simple sentence before responding, let alone pick up on that.
@bardoxvideos wrong there is not enough energy density in 3 AAA s to heat up any more wire than is featured there. Also they may have a high resistance and further reduce the change of shorting sparks.
@salopy0 The resistance of the wire is what starts the fire... The wires have resistance to the electricity and they heat up and ignite the wool. My friend put 2v through a guitar string and a tiny frayed piece on the top got red hot.
if you kill your flashlight and need to identify a threat AT NIGHT, you cannot do that outside the fire's area.
your points are valid and I respect them.but, DO NOT EVER RUIN ANY EQUIPMENT IN A SURVIVAL SETTING. YOU CAN NOT JUST STOP FILMING WHEN YOUR IN THAT SITUATION.
that was my point, it's bad example to insert that as an alternative to do that. if someone does follow that advice they may wind up dead doing it.
If you have fire, you have light, but you are right that would have been better to ignite the cotton wool in a fashion that preserves the torch. If possible. Naturally, carrying a Bic might have been a wiser choice. A point Les makes very clearly in his book.
@80spodcastchannel at night in a survival situation, you should not be outside the fire area at night, its dangerous and stupid and you will achive nothing by leaving your camp at night
Thats the point, I carry a blast match a bic and a road flare to start fires when I'm in the bush, and I have a bic in my coat even though I don't smoke, but if you loose, damage or for some other reason don't have your gear, well I think thats kinda what hes going for. Les is the man.
and your a stupid person who's too high on his supply to know the difference.
and I am nobody's n word, you can take you dumb comments and go away, your ignorant and your also so loser you havent a clue as to what I was even trying to point out..in short you suck and you made everyone who read your dumb comments see this, thanks for confirming your a idiot, and now everyone can see it
That is completely besides the point of this show. Anyone who is remotely intelligent should already know how to use these devices. The whole idea is for him to show that there are other ways to make fire if you are caught unprepared and without these items. Should you have them, USE THEM! He is only giving intelligent and insightful additional options.
@80spodcastchannel you droped your flint a mile back. your lighter doesnt work at high altitudes. your matches got wet beacuse the ziplocks didnt lock all the way like they ussaly do. magnifying glass lens got broken when you triped on a log, what do you do now?
@12jason223 build a bow, carve out a catch board, and use a fire bow.. you didnt tell me the conditions of operation, use an ICE magnifying glass, rub two sticks, or one of the REDUNDANT lighters, flints, magnesium fire starters that I always carry. I have shown time and again in my videos the 'rule of TWO'. good comment and thought provoking as a theoretical. but I usually try to maintain backups for my back ups, and be smart about things.
... haha and now you don't have a flashlight. :\ There's a million ways to use the heat of that flashlight without destroying it, and lighting it on fire.
uh lighter, uh matches, uh uh hmmm, butane jet crackpipe lighter, uh more matches, uh white phosphorus grenade, uh thermite grenade,,uh a miracle,,,uh potassium permanganate/glycerin,,,uh a welding machine,,,uh jeez maybe not quite a million
Didn't you hear him? He pointed out where the bulb would go..meaning he didn't have one, making the flashlight useless. Besides, a fire is way more valuable in a survival situation. A flashlight is basically only good at night and a fire can be used as a torch if done right. What I'm saying is, do not question Mr. Stroud's methods!
@GexMix what the hell is the point in going into camping/tramping/getting stuck in the middle of nowhere in the first place, with no bulb in one of the most essential tools you will need while on your stroll. "Oh shit didn't remember to check my headlamp for a working lamp inside, but shit....at least i've got a guitar with 6 strings..."
He said, "That's where the bulb would go", but it looked to me like there might still be an emitter there. So he phrased it funny, but why on earth would he be in the woods with a broken LED headlamp? Where would the LED have gone?
I'll question Mr. Stroud all I want when the situation seems absurd. As an entertaining exercise, it's interesting. As a survival situation, not likely. A guitar, a broken headlamp and a multitool? Yeah, that person's an idiot for wandering into the woods.
@GexMix you look closly, that led is clearly there. (or it was) 0:26 it is not in the casing anymore because he took it out. it looks like an cree power LED mounted on a aluminum star base. and what is he doing with a guitar?
I thought he didn't want to create a fire.

I love the way he ruins equipment rather then CARRY a firemaking device.
a MAGNESIUM/FLINT ROD..2 ounces
a BIC LIGHTER..1 ounce
a BOOK OF MATCHES WRAPPED IN TWO ZIP LOCK BAGS....1 ounce.
a MAGNIFYING GLASS LENS..under an ounce.
all weight for all of this still not even noticable as a everyday carry
Les Stroud..uses the most convoluted means to light fires of anyone I have EVER seen on videos
