Obviously many people have never worked on a turkey farm. These animals are stupid. They are the only animal known to drown for not knowing better than to get out of the rain. Well i've lived on a farm for 2 years . Yes i admit i slaughtered animals BUT !! We didnt do it LIKE THAT . That is purely disgusting. We use tools to kill them instantly so they wont feel any pain once so ever. Also we had to do it for money for our house. We were very poor and all we had was a farm . I am a turkey grower and what they did in the first 10secs was proper procedure, and all of that flapping afterwards is nerves. Now I do have to say that some of that stuff was over the line, but not all of what is shown is cruelty, it is just the nature of factory farming. Anyways, don't assume that all growers operate this way, because that isn't the case.
A lot of people are putting blame on the workers, but you have to realize how desensitized they probably are to the whole thing. When you work in a facility that treats living, sentient creatures like inanimate objects on a conveyor line, I imagine that is exactly how you start to see them after a while. How else could you possibly handle it but to block it out of your mind?

When I retired, I will raise a few chicken, let them run freely, eat freely, and die naturally. They are animals for food, I know, but I also know that even animals for food deserve a dignity and more importantly they don't necessarily have to be part of our diet.
@foxrunmall That's a noble sentiment, but unless you live in an area where everyone around you keeps their cats and dogs well regulated and a lot of foliage and trees for your chickens to hide in, free range is just as bad as keeping them in cages too small to move in. You'll want to make some kind of enclosure to keep them safe while still giving them a ton of room to move around in happily. An enclosure makes it easier to find and help chickens that are suffering disease or injury, too.

As much as I agree with this video and many of the comments I see below, you don't have to go vegan. There are a few organic meat farms out there that humanely raise their animals by feeding them their proper food (which is in turn organic- no Monsanto here!) and treating them with love while alive. When it is time to slaughter them, they do it humanely rather than like Butterball and countless others do. You don't have to completely cut out meat, just be smart about which meat you buy.

Well i've lived on a farm for 2 years . Yes i admit i slaughtered animals BUT !! We didnt do it LIKE THAT . That is purely disgusting. We use tools to kill them instantly so they wont feel any pain once so ever. Also we had to do it for money for our house. We were very poor and all we had was a farm . I am a turkey grower and what they did in the first 10secs was proper procedure, and all of that flapping afterwards is nerves. Now I do have to say that some of that stuff was over the line, but not all of what is shown is cruelty, it is just the nature of factory farming. Anyways, don't assume that all growers operate this way, because that isn't the case.

A lot of people are putting blame on the workers, but you have to realize how desensitized they probably are to the whole thing. When you work in a facility that treats living, sentient creatures like inanimate objects on a conveyor line, I imagine that is exactly how you start to see them after a while. How else could you possibly handle it but to block it out of your mind?
The workers definitely deserve blame but the real problem is factory farming. It breeds indifference to suffering.

@foxrunmall That's a noble sentiment, but unless you live in an area where everyone around you keeps their cats and dogs well regulated and a lot of foliage and trees for your chickens to hide in, free range is just as bad as keeping them in cages too small to move in. You'll want to make some kind of enclosure to keep them safe while still giving them a ton of room to move around in happily. An enclosure makes it easier to find and help chickens that are suffering disease or injury, too.

As much as I agree with this video and many of the comments I see below, you don't have to go vegan. There are a few organic meat farms out there that humanely raise their animals by feeding them their proper food (which is in turn organic- no Monsanto here!) and treating them with love while alive. When it is time to slaughter them, they do it humanely rather than like Butterball and countless others do. You don't have to completely cut out meat, just be smart about which meat you buy.

Same goes for clothes, every time you shop at Abercrombie or American Eagle and buy clothes made from India or Vietnam, you know some poor people are working their fingers to the bone in their sweatshop. All this just so you can wear those clothes for a season and throw them away.

@nessiria This has NOTHING to do with veganism. In this day in age, you are *more likely* to know where your meat came from, and have greater choice in finding cruelty-free meat. It doesn't take a radical dietary change to fix things - that won't fix anything. Speaking with your words and dollars will. Luddism will not fix anything. The way forward is not backwards. Stop buying crappy, factory-farmed food. Buy local and humane.

@thedrpfenderson You have it backwards dude. In this day and age there are barely any places to buy "cruelty free" as you put it, meat. All of the meat you buy comes from 5 companies. 5! Even the little "sub" companies that boast "cruelty free" are owned by those very companies. One needs to search high and low to find true pigmanship in farming these days. You have NOT done any research on the meat and dairy industries, it's obvious. Time for a beer! :)

@MegaTimc1 Sorry bro - I buy my food from my farmer's market or local co-op, so I know exactly where all my food came from. I've even met some of the farmers/ranchers in person. I have been a farmer/rancher for my own benefit (not sales, just personal food supply). You have fun on your vegan wikis, I'll be taking my lessons from hands-on experience. Stop spreading disinformation. Empower those who don't know that they have a choice.

I live in rural Pa. and go to farmers markets as well, so you don't know shit. I'll bet you think local small farms don't use pesticides to grow vegetables either. Do you really believe it's easier to find small family farm raised meat than it was in the past??

@thedrpfenderson unless you're poor and live in some inner city ghetto (like say, the place where I teach). You have hundreds/thousands of people/kids who just don't have the money for organic meat. Aside from saving money, eating only plant-based whole foods is also a huge health benefit (check out the documentary Forks Over Knives). Veganism isn't radical if you do it right.
