  • AWESOOOOOOOME!!!!!

  • That was a very enjoyable solo, not from a virtuoso of the clarinet obviously, but nice :)

  • one cannot be a part time musician it is too difficult of a profession!

but let him have fun I think, not sure on this one.

  • great!

  • it's to do with the difference between strict New Orleans and 'The Dixieland Sound'.

If you consider the polished Hollywood sound of Bob Crosby worth listening to, then

it's quite understandable that you won't connect with Woody's stuff at all. It's a

    different world.

  • I really want to like this music with Woody, but for me something is missing from it and I do no tknow what it is. Listen to the Bob Crosby's Dixie tunes for example.

I think it has something to do with the rhythm and content of the solos.

  • @gwatersusa

he sounds better on albums and he is much better than me, but i do agree that his sustains lack depth and richness. I like Goodman including his Mozart, but he never made any movies and his stand-up sucked - what's the matter with a man having fun he played reasonably and we have not seen his best stuff

  • It's a shame people can only use Benny Goodman as a benchmark for ability on the clarinet. Woody is obviously dearly attached to the legacy of Johnny Dodds and is

devoted to the sound ,as all the guys in the band are. Benny Goodman has often quoted Johnny Dodds as his primary influence. It is clear from this clip that Woody has studied this genre very fully indeed.

  • @bonzodogband1 I'd say Artie Shaw is the benchmark for technique...

  • Mi sembra che come "clarinettista" Woody Allen ha ancora margini di miglioramento. D'altronde, non mi sembra il tipo che possa studiare musica un paio di ore al giorno. Magari quando sarà in pensione ci sorprenderà tutti!!!

  • It's too bad Benny Goodman never tried directing movies.

  • I applaud his enthusiasm, but it sounds a little robotic. Doesn't quite have that feeling of sassy spontaneity.

  • @A550RGY lol the man looks like a hundred years old if he had that sassy spontaneity he might break something.

  • Woody is playing in the style of Johnny Dodds, a New Orleans jazz clarinet pioneer. Dodds was on clarinet with some of the early Louis Armstrong bands e.g. Hot Five and Hot Seven...

  • wow!!!

  • That was ..bad. It's clear he didn't studied.

  • @lluannr That was... good, it was clear he practiced hard and succeeded in playing his part.

  • @Reyjaka yeah, also it's clear it's the first time you hear a clarinet player.

  • @lluannr Not really, I play clarinet... And he is actually really good for a jazz clarinet player, let's see you play the clarinet that high.. I can't and i'm on my 8th year of clarinet..

  • @Reyjaka he was out of tune. End of discussion, who cares for register if you can't play in tune?

  • @lluannr He was playing in tune? Can you even tell? He's playing JAZZ it won't sound like concert, pep, or marching pieces.

  • @Reyjaka hahahahhaha so you think jazz is about wrong notes, yeah, I see.

  • @lluannr Have you even seen the piece of music for that song? Maybe he WAS playing it right.. do you even know? Have you even TOUCHED a clarinet? Maybe he isn't playing the composition of the song you have heard before? Don't flame a clarinet player unless you can play better than him.

  • @lluannr It is clear that you need to really brush up on your grammar. Goodbye you troll.

  • Pretty darned cool!

  • His Album Wild man blues is pretty decent

  • What's everyone's problem with Woody's playing? Just had a trawl through the comments and every other person is saying "Oh he doesn't sound like Benny Goodman" etc etc. Woop-de-doo! He doesn't sound like Benny Goodman; he sounds like Woody Allen. If he sounded like Benny Goodman, chances are he would -be- Benny Goodman. If you prefer Benny to Woody, listen to him instead. So what if his playing is a little wooden or it's out of tune, he's just doing it for fun, it's a hobby of his.

  • @JimmyJazz94 next to masturbation.

  • I love woddy!

  • Yes!!!!! Wow!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes!!!!! Wow!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this guy is excellent that's how they played it in the old days of jelly roll Morton!!!

  • Albert system?

  • @tl1358 Yes, it is an Albert system clarinet, easier to slur the notes because of open unkeyed holes. In every vid I see him play the albert system...great for jazz.

  • Not as good as pro musicians but he's got flow, that's cool.

  • Co za asy!

  • woody allen whit a crystal mouthpiece?

    nice!!!

  • @sonapipian Thats not crystal. Its a special occasion rosewood mouthpiece.

  • @YDDADCIV OK, thank!

  • I play clarinet as a hobby, and at least I can say that he can get the sound that he wants, he controls his clarinet, the rest is people's opinion of the sound he gets

  • Woody your suppose to flow through a clarinet not jerk it.Sorry woody you just dont have it.lol

  • Woody is one of my vavorite comedians but on a clarinet he sounds like a cat or cats inside a clothes dryer.

  • Woody Allen is a PASSION-MAN... Il like him so much !

  • I don't understand. How is this bad?

  • YES

  • Well i am a big Woody fan in all he does, but even after seeing him play live, i just don't think he is good clarinette player. Sound is everything with this instrument and that just i not it. Sorry !

    I still love him.

  • @mimiciobrao007 Uhmmm...this kinda kills your comment...It's CLARINET* .-.

  • @0xMusicManiacx0

Thank's for your comment dear, but i am french and my english is not to good, i think that still gives me the right to give an honest opinion. .

  • @mimiciobrao007 Oh, I didn't realize that-- I'm sorry. :/

  • @0xMusicManiacx0

    No problem !

  • not one smile from him? wow- he's havin a blast up there---- :P LOL!

  • woody rocks

  • Good effort. From an untrained ear, sounded a bit wooden but it's Woody A!

  • Fuck saxophone Ima play my clarinet blues.

  • i for one dig the hell out of this bad-ass edgy bluesy clarinet playing. it's out of tune a bit, sure. great. that's the blues. that's earthly and real. out of tune sits just fine with me. i agree w/ chocotastic. what's going on here people. woody sounds to me a bit like edmond hall or george lewis, ed hall of course being one of the all-time greatest in my book. Do yourselves a favor and look him up. over....

  • Benny Goodman would have shot himself in the head if he had played as badly as Woody Allen. But hell, pumping his own step-daughter every night must take its toll.

  • @krushnoi He's more accomplished and wealthier than you'll ever be in 40 lifetimes, perhaps he gained his genius from the wet pussy of his stepdaughter?

  • You gotta love that man!

  • fuck the piano

  • ...and it sure as hell doesn't sound like anything near Benny. Is his reed split?

  • Looks like Benny, but Benny Goodman didn't shank his daughter.

  • sensacional....

  • looks like an Albert system clarinet!!

  • Unfortunately its out of tune ..

  • Haha thats soo awesome... i love his sound, im trying to get it on the Eb in my jazz band :D

  • he's good ! his sound is awesome... he makes it like that on purpose !

  • I am a jazz clarinettist. Woody Allen is very talented although its not particularly the tone I want. I agree entirely with choctastic. OwnerofHappiness - go play your little triangle, cos that's all you sound talented enough to play. You ever heard of a few people like Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Artie Shaw, Eddie Daniels or Adrian Cunningham, just to name a few?

  • you know what.. who gives a crap what clarinets are supposed to do... its about making it about your accent....clarinets are unique... and you make them that way! and instead of critisizing.. appreciate what that man can do. stop whining that jazz is so not clarinet ! its cool to me. and to him apparently.

  • bravo Woody! gracias al clarinete te ahorraste el psicólogo. Very musictherapy!

  • lame. Hideous sound, hideous solo

  • @eltigredecandioti89 yea the clarinet is made for actual pieces, not jazz. Friggin old ppl

  • SQUID WOOD!

    great!

  • Just great! What a guy...

  • 3/4??!?!?!? you tit...

  • What tenderness watching Woody Allen playing the clarinet!! nice!!

  • doesnt thwe guy next to him look like that guy from 'mad money'

  • Hey chocotastic i agree with you 100% people think clarinet is not a jazz, blues, or swing instrument but its. look at Benny Goodmen for example.

  • wonderful! is he improvisating????

  • Improvising . . .

    Yes . . .

  • hotuser2 he is a jazz clarinet. his tone is supposed to sound like that. he is the staple jazz clarinetest. shut your face and learn about music before you make your ignorant comments.

  • he's ok. no baby dodds. henry questa or benny goodman can blow him away. it's all in 3/4 time. no pete fountain. i did enjoy the trumpet player.

  • 3/4 time? are you deaf?

  • HAHAHAHAHA

    Deaf..¡?

  • shocking.

  • Man are people seriously trying to shoot down a blues clarinet tone? Might as well get pissed off at an orange for not being an apple.

  • well said.

  • @chocotastic hee funny

  • te amo woody!!!

  • his tone sux. however, he has talent.

  • It's called jazz clarinet?

  • his tone is fine, his pitch is just way sharp.

  • Close enough for jazz

  • fantastico lui si che sa come fare del vero jazz

  • It's blues not jazz

  • right ;)

  • He's the man!!!! I play clarinet 2nd clarinet and i love this guy music and movies!

  • hhhhhhhhh uuuuuuuuuuuu

  • Have you seen him skate?

  • we all know he's doing it just for fun )

  • @raul1022 WELL S A I D !!!!!!! Love this MAN

  • Comment removed

  • @raul1022 And that's what jazz, and all music, is all about!

  • oh maybe you dont have any idea about jazz

if you dont no about that shhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Well he is 79.

You should hear his playing on the Sleeper soundtrack

  • Thankfully he's only 73 and hopefully got a few more good years ahead of him.

  • @KidKool2U You have no conception of interpretation you idiot.

  • Bravo Woody!

  • que foda! adoro ele

  • Éste hombre es un despierto.

  • He's not bad for an amateur, but he's no Benny Goodman or Bob Mintzer.

  • His intention was never to play like Benny Goodman. He is more interested in musicians like George Lewis or Albert Burbank.
