@KeithPsychosis Not true. The Saturn model 2 controller shown in the vid was the original controller that shipped with the Japanese Saturn in 1994. The 3D controller (the big round one) was released much later in 1996. And before that there was the model 1 fat controller that was released with the American Saturn in 1995.
@KeithPsychosis Maybe in North America but not other parts of the world. It was on sale in Japan with the release of the console in 1994 (2 years before the others). It was the original Saturn controller and Sega didn't make it available to American gamers until several years later.
@KeithPsychosis The US Saturn originally shipped with a clunkier version of the 6 button controller, but later US systems shipped with the slimmer Japanese/European 6 button controller. As was already stated, the big round 3D controller was released in mid 1996 to coincide with the release of NiGHTS into DREAMS, which utilized the analog functions of the 3D controller.
360 controller is the best, more specifically the razer onza. I'm actually surprised that a third party company could actually make a better controller than microsoft itself.
The reason the original xbox controller looks so similar to the Dreamcast controller, is becasue when SEGA left the hardware market, Some design specialists actually teamed up with microsoft in creating the design for the original xbox controller
When I was younger, in about 2004, my mate thought that the Dreamcast was a Microsoft console that was the precursor to the Xbox, like the PS1 was to the PS2 and N64 was to Gamecube. I knew he was wrong, and we were only 13, but it is an interesting thought considering the time frame the consoles died/launched in and, as your video shows, the apparent similarities between the controllers.
personally I like the Master System pad much more than the NES. no pause button, but one thing not mentioned in this vid is SMS's 'block' d-pad is perfect for diagonal motions while the
'cross' d-pads always made it more difficult and dent your fingers. Saturn is still my favorite pad layout with 6 buttons + shoulders. I've never been a fan of 360/PS pads because of 2 buttons on each shoulder. it's confusing and i've died many times due to hitting the wrong one. too many buttons. cheers!
I'm about to play The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past on my modded x-box. It's cool how the controller can be used for so many games. I do prefer Sony controllers, not necessarily because its more comfortable but because the analog sticks are more sensitive.
i liked the big size of the xbox controler. i have a ps3 now and sometimes my hands are uncomfortable i feel like my fingers are being crossed in the back of the controller. original xbox had the best controller
the funny thing is that the S-Type Xbox Controller actually was the original one! BUT they made a focus group test and the focus group people liked the Big one more so they used it :D funny story rite xD
I really really really enjoyed the OG Xbox fatty controller...i don't know why people hate so much. I think it's the aesthetic of it, not being sleek and tiny. The reason I love it though, it simply sat in your hands and felt completely balanced. I didn't have to really grip it which made it feel weightless.
i actually prefer the 1st model xbox controller over the smaller one. yeah it was huge but it was awkward trying to move my thumb below the face buttons the hit the black and white ones.
Shit, modern 360 version is just the best. Anyone who says other wise is just trying to seem like they've used the other controllers but if they did, you would know that the 360 controller was the most comfortable and perfect button layout (maybe start and back should be easier to reach but you don't use them much anymore)
You should have noted that Microsoft was involved with the development of the Sega Dreamcast controller. That is why there is that resemblance. IMHO I believe that Sega wanted to get out of the console making industry, due to heavy losses thanks to Sony, but didn't want to disappoint their fan base. Microsoft wanted to break into the console industry after its successes with computer games and had a surplus of cash, but they didn't know how to make gaming consoles. Sega bowed out, Xbox was born.
Pretty interesting video... though I noticed you had two different Saturn and original Xbox controllers. For the sake of continuity, a Genesis/Mega Drive 6-button controller might have been a nice addition to the line-up as it's more comparable to the first Saturn controller you have there.
There is a controller between your Genesis and Saturn controllers. It was another Genesis controller with the same layout as your Saturn controller but shaped different. I have one, and one like yours (Genesis). I like the other one a lot better. I dunno if you just chose to leave it out or didn't have one but I thought I would let you know :) Awesome video!
Interesting seeing the resemblance between the Xbox and Dreamcast controllers. I do have to question your statement about the irrelevance of controllers from other manufacturers though, since there's a large overlap between microsoft and Sony controller designs, and this design is very clearly influenced by the SNES layout. Hold an snes pad next to a modern controller then tell me it's not relevant...
@KuraIthys Other manufacturers such as Atari, Sony, Magnavox, Nintendo, Fairchild etc are not relevant in THIS video because the subject here is SEGA and Microsoft Controllers (specifically MS -> 360 as per title). I'm not discussing who came up with what feature or who did what first. I'm simply looking at SEGA and Microsoft's design choices from one generation to the next.
The amount Sony/Nintendo fanboys screaming foul, stomping their feet and not understanding this is staggering.
i think that the best controller is logitech's xbox 360 chillstream, cause it is lightweight and grips perfectly.I only wish it had better analog sticks ,after 1 year left analog stick is already out of the center deadzone.
very interesting, the 360 has expansions as well, not much cos every thing is built in to the Xbox, but stuff like the chat pad that make it easier to type stuff on the xbox.
I have a PS3 and Xbox 360 and I prefer the Xbox 360 Controller,no questions asked. I love the PS3 but the controllers shape just isn't as comfortable.
@RetroGameTech this video explains my exact thoughts since the Xbox came out. While everyone wondered if sega would ever make a return I thought the Xbox was a Dreamcast 2 of sorts. Many of the launch games for the Xbox were either originally slated for the Dreamcast or were already on the Dreamcast so that kind of makes me think a bit more. Was the Xbox really created by Microsoft or was it adapted from previous plans for the Dreamcast 2? It's a possibility and remember, the Dreamcast ran ME...
The evolution of these controllers are very relevant and important to video games. I talk about these controllers and their connections at my job pretty often.
By the time I moved to the Genesis system my thumbs were already wore out. Those old controllers sure were hard on thumbs. Sort of like what the Blackberry's did to a lot of people.
Very nice video and collection of controllers here but I feel that there is something missing. There was a 6 button mega drive controller which I think is a very important link between the mega drive and the saturn controllers. Also the original saturn controller was a bit beefier but I understand why you would leave that out.
Absolutely awesome! I always told my friends that the Microsoft Xbox was basically the successor to the Sega DreamCast. Not only were the controllers an evolution of Sega's but the games were too. Many of the popular Sega franchises continued on exclusive to the Xbox. Jet Grind Radio and Sega GT were even the pack-in games on Xbox. I still have Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT 2002! Many of the Sega games went multi-platform but I think Crazy Taxi and Panzer Dragoon got sequels on Xbox 1st
to all you complaining about the fact that there is no ps3 controller, maybe you should pay more attention to what he says in the beginning. plus he did say Next-Gen controller....no offense but the ps3 and ps2 both have the same basic controller. and in my opinion, again my opinion, playstation controllers are complete crap. thats just my opinion...dont get fanboy on me.
Hey that was a really fun video to watch. As I owned each of those consoles when they were current it was a nice trip down memory lane.
I remember the dreamcast was the most poorley secured console in the history of consoles. You could download a game off the web, burn it to a cd and then just play it. There was no need at all for mod chips or soft mods or any sort of hack whatsoever. It was just ridiculous and probably helped kill off Sega.
@fishburgr What you talking about? I had a Dreamcast and is not true, and as the Saturn, it was very annoying to bypass it's security, you had to use boot discs, the CD had to be ripped and specially burned since until today i never found GDs to sell and it doesn't read DvDs, mod-cips if you wanted, and in Saturn case a special cart inserted on its back.
@fishburgr Probably? Actually it DID kill SEGA's venture into the console realm. It was one of the reasons. The Dreamcast was one of the best consoles ever, but I do agree with you: it wasn't a safe bet for developers and game stores alike.
@DvT093 Sega and Microsoft cooperated to design the Dreamcast. If you have a Dreamcast, look at its front (where the controller ports are) and you'll see a "Powered by Windows CE" logo.
@DvT093 The Dreamcast and the Xbox are made by the same guys. Basically the Xbox was the next generation Dreamcast. Same team was working for Sega then transferred to Mictosoft.
I understand, Im not sure if Sega is microsoft, but after spending my childhood on a Genisis I can see where you get the Idea to put the two as comparison in the video, Xbox feels alot like Sega
i like how the playstation controller stayd almost the same for all these years but i really like the 360 controller because its confortable in my hands
I'm kind of shocked by how similar the original burger Xbox controller is to the Dreamcast controller. And it's interesting how Sega opted to abandon their "fighter" six button layout in favor of Sony's 4 button diamond layout. You'd think the six button layout would be better. And I just want to throw in the fact that the Dreamcast controller was damn uncomfortable. I always felt like my fingers were trapped. The Dreamcast and the N64 controllers are the worst for comfort in my experiences.
I always loved the 2nd gen XBox controller. Although the new bumpers definantly beat the black and white buttons usually used to throw grenades or go to map...
@HGAMES69 this video again as stated before is more about the correlation between sega and xbox but even on that note.. besides a handful of exclusive titles that ended up spreading between microsoft and nintendo anyways.. what exactly did sony contribute to gaming that sega and nintendo didn't already do? mind you I am a big fan of psp and plan on getting the vita but sony hasn't really done all that much besides modding another company's idea because of the appeal.
@steynproductions The NES controller isn't relevant here. This video is about product design and in particular the design evolution of Sega and Microsoft products.
the Microsoft Sidewinder PC gamepad was very influential on the XBox controllers

I understand, Im not sure if Sega is microsoft, but after spending my childhood on a Genisis I can see where you get the Idea to put the two as comparison in the video, Xbox feels alot like Sega

@HGAMES69 this video again as stated before is more about the correlation between sega and xbox but even on that note.. besides a handful of exclusive titles that ended up spreading between microsoft and nintendo anyways.. what exactly did sony contribute to gaming that sega and nintendo didn't already do? mind you I am a big fan of psp and plan on getting the vita but sony hasn't really done all that much besides modding another company's idea because of the appeal.
xShadowDarkX 2 months ago
@HGAMES69 if sony were to stop making games consoles all people would say is oh ok so when is the next xbox and wii game system coming out

And the NES controller?!
steynproductions 3 months ago
@steynproductions The NES controller isn't relevant here. This video is about product design and in particular the design evolution of Sega and Microsoft products.
