@tvallier in regards to xxD3fyingGr4vity's comment: I just wanted to say that dramatics and music go hand in hand. In order to get the feeling the composer had written into the lyrics, you need to dig depper. Even though you were successful with the vocals you still need to dig deeper in the music and find that character, that emotion that the composer initially had written. Otherwise GREAT JOB love the voice!
Just because he doesn't sound exactly like the recording doesn't mean his voice is inappropriate for the peice... I don't think it's too operatic of a voice at all. That being said I wouldn't run straight to vibrato on some of the higher notes myself. I think you could relax on the diction some, too, as it is musical theatre. No need to give a damn about proper english, giving the style. :) (Saying all of that of course within the bounds of what sounds good and healthy)
Youre an operatic singer, your a lyric perhaps dramatic baritone, and you sang this beautifully if it was opera but it's music theater so remember to adjust the style. While the opera style is probably better for the voice and stresses that vibrato, sustaining notes, singing vowels, the music theater style is more rough, stylized in every manner, and puts the emphasis on consonants. I'd like to hear you do opera!
I so do not miss recitals. Beautiful voice. Hope you are taking acting classes now. Would love to see you do the song again after you feel the song. You got the technique, now throw it out the window and have fun.
Thanks, it was a vocal recital, and this was one piece of over an hour of music crossing many genres. Fortunately I got to spend the entire semester learning wonderful music, unfortunately, dramatic coaching was never addressed. I am disappointed slightly by this, but the true testament of this vocal recital was singing. Thank you for the compliments and the criticism, both are always very much appreciated.
i disagree. great voice period...this is what, probably the closer of your senior recital? so you've sung like 45 minutes of classical music already? the "acting" is a little unnatural for broadway, but you sang it really well. great job.
I think he has a good voice...but you're wrong about it not being good for this song...his voice is very similar to the original...have you ever heard it? Brooks Ashmanskas sings it...look it up
actually, i saw the original cast when it was playing, so yes, i DO know Brooks Ashmanskas. dont be so quick to think someone doesnt know what they're talking about.
And no, his voice is not right for this song- its too neat, too pretty. this song calls for troubled, stressed, along with impurities- for lack of a better explanation, his voice (or at least how he sings this) is too pretty. he has a beautiful voice- that isnt the issue. but i know it takes guts to sing JRB, so i tip my hat to you.

Also wanted to add:
When you sing "right before your eyes" that last note is beautiful.
I think what I dislike about the acting is that you are too happy for this song. It should be a balance between blinding love and tortured pain.

The voice is beautiful, but this song is very poppy, and it is sang very classically. Not right for his voice.

i think it's the kind of song that liberties can be taken on.
