i read this as standalone and it was a great story. just sort of another part of the eternal relationship between batman and the joker. i found it straight forward not really needing any set up from other books. id like to find all the other books to set this up and the aftermath if anyone could help.
How can two grown men not know what's going on in this book? Bruce gets injected with Meth and Heroin and gets tossed into the streets, not knowing who he really is while having full blown hallucinations which Meth causes and the vomiting which is commonly caused by Heroin. Is that where you guys got lost?
You´re not dumb at all. Yours is a good review. The thing is RIP was only about Batman as a force of nature. I loved it. And I loved the idea of the Joker getting insane just trying to make Batman loosen up. You probably didn´t enjoy that aspect as some of us did. Not all the people enjoy the same things.
No offense but whats the deal, I kept hearing tons of reviews saying they didnt know what was going on in RIP but I found it be pretty straight forward. Okay I know im smart but either I must really really super smart(though I CAN read Philip K Dick which is apparently no small feat to some) or Im surrounded in a world of idiots because I found very little that was confusing about this story
If you had read all the necessary prequels to this book it's probably easy to follow. If you read the book on its own without any outside reference it's confusing. That's why it threw us for a loop - because we hadn't read everything else.
But I didn't. Im not a Morrison hater(though I do think he is overrated) but I hated his run on Batman so I skipped A LOT of his run before I starting reading R.I.P. and again, I found it pretty straightforward
Technically it should say volume 3. It's volume 3 of 5 (aparently). Grant's whole run is one big story. All the RIP and Last Rites tie ins that aren't written by Grant don't matter to the story (like wiht Final Crisis).
Also Joker get's shot int he face in issue one of Batman and Son. Which I belive is Grant's first issue of his run.
See? that's what we mean: if you have to have read all this other stuff first then the story FAILS. If it's part of a larger story, simply label them "parts 1, 2, 3... et al"
Gee, for a guy who says he has 3000 Batman comics, you must not read them.
Joker was shot in the face by a guy dressed as Batman in the first issue of Morrison's Batman run.
Also, much of the Nada Parbat and the ritual Batman went through was shown durning the "52" series, which Morrison co-wrote.
If you don't read "Batman and Son" all the way to the end of "R.I.P" you won't get whats going on. Its not as simple as "Batman beats up Joker" for the upteenth time that most writers do.
That's exactly what I'm talking about. If you have to have read all these OTHER series to understand what's going on then the story itself is not a story - it's just a marketing gimmick.
Grant Morrison is a fine writer but he's a terrible story-teller. He wants to confuse the hell out of you and if you can't keep up it's YOUR fault.
You shouldn't have to have a photographic memory just to be able to follow a comic book.
I guess a book that challenges its readers isn't your speed.
I, and many other people, are loyal Batman fans who read every issue, regardless of the art or writer. I myself, have been reading Batman comics for years. I just do not decide pick up an issue now and then like you.
Bottom line, if you don't know what the Hell it is you are talking about, don't review it! Go read Secret Invasion. That was written for idiots.
There's quite a difference between "challenging" the readers and "confusing" them. Brian K. Vaughn and Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore challenge their readers. Morrison just uses arbitrary surrealism.
i Enjoyed Batman R.I.P. now (because of lack of transportaion and money) i don't often get to go buy comics to keep myself posted as to what is going on. so as a back-up i have to use the Internet (which sucks and makes feel like a comic geek whos not reading comics) but i sat a read R.I.P. After Batman and Son and i enjoyed Both Books. not my fav Batman Stories but i liked them alot 5/5 to be honest anyways loved the video alot :-D
Hey Don & Chad... If I may be objective, you certainly covered "Batman RIP Hardcover" in detail but most people read comic books and I'm thinking that you would do much better viewer-wise on Youtube if you reviewed comic books. How about adding a 3rd reviewer (I'm available and local, Renss.) then you'd have the deep guy (Chad) the logical guy (Don) and me Vince, the color guy. We'll kick it off next week with FF #1 Dark Reign and Agents of Atlas # 2. Great job guys !

Yeah, Morrison's writing lends itself more to more surrealistic artists. But I don't like him writing superhero comics anyways.
Chad9976 3 years ago
I think DC should commission a different artist to redo all the issues that Tony Daniel did. His art is, in my opinion, totally inappropriate.
When Frank Quitely (or another good artist) does Morrison, the results are always magical.
